It is time to take a look at a gun that is a symbol of the Wild West and one of the best deer hunting rifles out there especially when it comes in .30-30 Winchester. Yes, it is the good old lever action that we all know and love from the good old cowboy movies.
The lever action rifles in .30-30 have been around for quite some time, actually more than a century. In their lifespan, this round shot from this kind of gun has scored more whitetail deer than any one of the other cartridges out there. Given this record, it is no surprise that it is very popular and will stay around for quite a while longer.

The AR platform is the ubiquitous "scary, black rifle," but wherever some people want it banned, you could easily have a lever action rifle. They are arguably the world's first assault rifle, and greatly underappreciated.

This is from an Outdoor Life article:
30-30 is better than ever. The 160-grain, flex-tipped projectile leaves the muzzle at about 2,400 fps, yielding 2,046 ft-lbs of muzzle energy. Velocity remains high-2,150 fps at 100 yards, 1,916 fps at 200 yards, and 1,619 fps at 300 yards-and so does the energy downrange. The bullet delivers 1,304 ft-lbs of energy at 200 yards. And at 300 yards, it still has 1,025 ft-lbs-plenty to kill a deer.

The first gun I bought was a Model 94 in 1974. I worked all summer for it and even though I was 17, I just paid for it and walked out the door. It still looks and shoots great. Best 74 dollars ever spent. I love my Henry Lever Actions in .357 and .45-70 but the 94 is part of my family.

30/30 Winchester is a superb caliber. It’s an expert’s stalking hunting round.

I’ve used them for well over fifty years now.

I'm aware of the benefits of the lighter polymer tipped spi=e pointed bullets, but the majority of .30-30 hunters aren't purchasing the ; ... others do .
From my experience because of less than optimal sighting, open sights or cheap scopes; are less than optimal. Lower magnification, heavy crosshairs and see through (under) scope rings all contribute. Sure you can put an expensive "fine" reticle on a lever .30-30, but @ what expense ? The money would seem better spent on a more efficient rifle. A hunter with more resources probably wouldn't choose a 30-30 to begin with, probably wouldn't "need" more expensive ballistic ammo and wouldn't be purchasing an expensive scope.
Many years ago, being a handloader; I acquired an H&R single shot Handiricle as a camp rifle and loaded .30 cal.- 130 gr. Spire points. Plenty of oomph for dispatching coyotes and other nucience animals two legged or four and enough for turkey of deer within normal ranges.

The rifle arrived today and I dialed in the scope just a couple hours ago th-cam.com/users/postUgkxQt2uORDRfFOVSrO4idv4B90ThT6EOnEL . I haven’t shot with a scope in probably 25 years. The X on the left was my target. (the shot almost in the bullseye on the right X was my father in laws first shot after I made adjustments) The two shots circled are my first 2 shots. Then I brought it down - shot once. Then brought it over to the left. From there zeroed it in to dead center. This all was from 25 yards out. Follow instructions carefully when mounting the scope. So far I'm very happy with the purchase.

For some STUPID reason, I have owned two Marlin 336 in the .35 Remington over the years and ended up getting rid of them. Then I decided 3 yrs. ago to get another one. However, I was having a hard time finding one. Instead, I ran across a deal one the Marlin in a 30-30. It was such a good buy, I could not pass it up. Now, in the past 3 yrs., I have put down 5 deer and all dropped in their tracks. Granted, 4 of the 5 were around 75 yds. away and I had relatively open shots. However, the 5th. one (2 weeks ago) was a real nice 8 point buck and he was between 125 and 150 yds. away, through fairly dense woods. When I fired, the only thing I could see clearly was the head and neck. He dropped with a perfect neck shot. Of course, I was proud of the nice 8 point buck, but I was more proud of the shot from that simple Marlin 30-30.

Most of the lever action rifles seen in westerns including those of John Wayne were not rifle cartridges like 30-30 Winchester but actually chambered in handgun rounds such as 44-40, 38-40, 45 Colt and a few others.
I still carry my grandfather's saddle rifle when I head into the outdoors. It is a Savage 1899 in 30-30 Winchester (or 22 Savage Hi-Power) which I have loaded with 150 grain XTP bullets. Imagine a saddle rifle as versatile as a modern AR-15.

Adequate penetration and internal hemorrhaging is what kills an animal. You can kill an animal faster with the high velocity, but both cartridges will accomplish exactly the same thing, so it's not quantifiable to deal with all the added cost, recoil, shortened barrel life, sound pressure of magnums. If you absolutely cannot get closer than 350-400 yards, then it's understandable to go with more power.

Marlin surpassed it in reliability, is more robust and the obvious solid top which allowed scope mounting. The Browning BLR and Savage 99 are better in my opinion.
