  • Many people want to understand the key differences between installing underfloor heating or ThermaSkirt. Whilst underfloor heating is a fantastic option for many situations, it's not always the most practical or cost-effective option.

I am intrigued by the product and like the innovative design, but your explanation of it working in the opposite way to a conventional radiator is fundamentally flawed and incorrect. Only showing thermal imaging of one option is also misleading. It heats in exactly the same way as a conventional radiator, just smaller and all around the room rather than a larger point source. Do you have any data comparing the time to heat/cool and differences in efficiency/ running costs?

Thermaskirt is just Skirting-board radiators. Underfloor heating is very different. Thermaskirt, like radiators, would be required to be raised to a significantly higher temperature to heat a room through convection & radiation.
Underfloor heating heats through convection, conduction and radiation. Underfloor heating requires a much lower temperature to heat the same room, and while it's on for longer, it'll also retain that same thermal mass for longer.
DiscreteHeat - who makes Thermaskirt obviously won't say this.

UFH is potentially a much more complicated solution in retrofit though?

Potentially, but also better as a source of heating.
Skirting board radiators are literally just radiators that are along the skirting, so shouldn't require as much change - however will also be limited in terms of ability to output heat.
Underfloor heating is far more efficient and better as a source of heating, but will require more work to install.
If you're just trying to claw-back some wall space, then skirting board radiators (presuming they're enough to heat the room) would be cheaper and easier to do. But it won't do anything to improve the EPC of the house. It's exactly the same as radiators, just a different shape. Underfloor heating is more expensive, but more efficient too - and will improve the house's EPC rating.
