    Nice way to say that Ray Kurzweil is operating entirely on the trauma of losing his father. That's precisely why we shouldn't be taking cues from Kurzweil on anything. His pain shouldn't be allowed to influence our destiny.

    Did he say "Adyashanti"? Is that who he mentioned at ~15:00 as the source of his story about the boy who argues, fights, finally hates his playmate and leaves for forever, only then after feeling alone for an hour asks him if he again wants to play? An interesting guide to reference for understanding oneself.

    Eric Weinstein caught my attention back when he started talking about having come up with something as big as a grand unified theory. But he was super candid about what it is, and his eventual paper seemed to be a bunch of words that don't necessarily mean anything in the end. I don't know what to make of him, but I don't get the feeling that he has something meaningful to contribute to science

    • @soul4saken
      @soul4saken ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Perhaps the best thing he contributes is questioning why scientific enquiry has stagnated since string theory took over the minds of the best scientists for the better part of the last 40 years without any real movement. And how scientists have been so enamoured be general relativity that they have not tried to find where the larger truth that Einstein's relativity is but an incomplete portion of. Einstein was not held prisoner by Newtonian limitations, and thus he was able to discover properties of reality which filled in many of the gaps Newton had not resolved. It will take as adventurous a mind to break out of Einstein's general relativity prison.

    • @joelrivardguitar
      @joelrivardguitar ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree. Eric was on Rogan talking like he had the best new theory, it was regarding spinors and symmetry and the way he was hyping it without it being tested was sketchy. Bunch of B.S.

    • @joemagarac405
      @joemagarac405 ปีที่แล้ว

      Scientific enquiry has accelerated in the last 40 years in every field you care to look at, and technology, which trails science, is an obvious indicator of this. Talk to any - any - working scientist and they will confirm this. Are scientific institutions sometimes overly political or bureaucratic? Yes, but they always have been, since the days of Newton and Leibniz sniping at each other through gossip and proxies. The Copenhagen orthodoxy prevented anyone (like Bohm or Everett or Bell) from approaching foundational physics for 60 years. There are Dobzhanskys and there are Lysenkos, despite the scientific process being in practice the best way toward progress. Weinstein’s refusal to discuss his “theory” of GU with Tim Nguyen demonstrates clearly that he doesn’t actually care about advancing scientific enquiry but instead on stifling it. Nguyen gives a great in-depth analysis of GU on the Eigenbros TH-cam channel, if you’re interested in seeing how one advances scientific enquiry.

    Frenkel is really one of my all time favorite people. I think though that here, like most people he fails to make a distinction between people and their beliefs. He sees Kurzweil as genuinely human, and therefore that his beliefs have validity. On the contrary, I believe that we can love someone and even admire them greatly, and believe that they are sincere, while at the same time thinking that in some areas, their beliefs are not only wrong but very harmful, even destructive. If I didn't believe that I'd hate the whole world, because I've never met anyone, not even my closest friends, who believe precisely what I believe even on the most important issues.

    stunning conversation, gotta be careful of commonsense though, as einstein warned, there's big difference between "being in touch with your heart" and mature compassion, children are not innocent in the adult world, see Hitler's reaction to the death of his mother, and why ai to recreate ones father is a bad motive, bad start, when it comes to nextgen computing. the motivation does matter, but that should be of the perennial wisdom, not base OS 'child' emotions, silly dichotomy debates as per the muscular aristotle, instead playful with socratic daimon, compassion as what the oracle of delphi suggested, as prof frenkel says. beautiful conversation.
