My family is Bajans. My great-great grandfather went to Panama to help build the Panama Canal. He worked as a Spanish interpreter for the Bajans. He later was able to emigrate to the US and brought his daughter, my great-grandmother. She settled in Harlem and was a domestic. Once she was established she sent for my Grandfather who was in Barbados and island hopping to Trinidad looking for work. He landed in Queens, NY where he still lives to this day at age 99. I am happy and proud to know my roots!

She was in her mid 30's when he was killed and she was never with another man after him. She already had her one daughter before he left. She lived until age 106. I think the answer to your question is that workers were needed o work on the canal so immigration to Panama at that time was easy.

My Great Grandmother passed away yesterday. She was 101. Hearing this documentary make me wonder how she didn't. R.I.P Great Grandmother.
