I believe John Galliano is in his peak not only of his creative output but how kind and generous he is to allow all this filming inside the ateliers giving a massive exposure to everyone who is with him during the creative process and not only that but giving the names and voices to his team. Is beautiful to watch and for someone of the level of magnitude such Galliano is very humbling how he after all these years is so enthusiastic and passionate about fashion.

Thank you so much for this video. Galliano is single handedly the reason I ever looked at Haute Couture, or generally Fashion, as an art form, and I relate to Margiela's work on such an important level for me, for challeging and provoking thoughts and questions and ideas. Since all of these contents of Galliano at Maison Margiela strated coming out, podcasts on spotify, videos of the making, even the WAY that the videos are made and the art direction behind it, I've been breathing this stuff in more than oxygen. I talk about this constantly, to everyone around me and at my school. I have actual tears in my eyes from hearing another person have a fair amount of respect for what the Maison is doing right now.
I agree Galliano is doing an absolutely fantastic job at Margiela and it is so inspiring to see him have such a successful second act. I also think it is so smart how he is building a design vocabulary that starts with the couture and trickles down to the more basic items like the "memory of" idea or the flat seaming "outline" idea so that the more wearable money maker kind of items still have something interesting to their concept and construction rather than just a logo slapped onto a plain tee.
I absolutely love what he's done for Margiela. I fully believe that Galliano is the greatest designer of _all time_ , his level of creative genius is beyond most of us.
I think the reason why SWALK and the podcast are both so effective is that in the modern era consumers want to feel as though they are apart of a brand. When you buy luxury anything, yes, you are buying into a brand however these techniques allow the consumer to connect directly with the brand and the designers. Consumers are treated like confidants. I read recently that brands need to become masters of content if they want to connect with their audience and Margiela is doing just that.
Of course he’s bringing heavy doses of himself to the house, that’s exactly what he was hired for and that’s why his collections are brilliant - from the first one to the most recent one. He’s not supposed to be another Martin, if not they would have hired any other designer. And the S.W.A.L.Ks are a beautiful idea and are beautifully made, but they’re really just a complement, it’s not what makes the collections great. His collections stand for themselves. 🙌🏻 I liked this video.

I was so thrilled to see these glimpses into the creative process of such an exciting studio. I’m a painter and the same is true for my trade - you see a lot of videos on process, but rarely any in-depth views on the process of more established artists - it always seems stingy to me. I love your channel btw.

Glad you like what Galliano has been doing at the Maison! I discovered your channel recently and it was one of the things I was wondering about. I've been a huge Galliano fan for forever and I always knew he would bring Marigela forward. I haven't checked their sales, but I am guessing the clothes sell really well, lots of companies carry the collections. I have even heard that Margiela is keeping the OTB Group alive (but that might be an exaggeration). Renzo Rosso was very smart to help Galliano and give him a position because Galliano has a great eye, is so smart, creative and adaptable (From Dior to Margiela). He has modernized and pushed forward the ideas/DNA of the house which I think its what any designer working in a house with a DNA should do. I just hope that Galliano learned from his mistake at Dior and wont let the pressure get to him, then we all will be happy forever because I have no doubt he will always design amazing interesting clothes while he is a designer
yeah I was blown away by those S.W.A.L.K. videos, for someone old like me it reminded me of what I loved about fashion. After his downfall I actually sold my Galliano book I’d loved in college. The illustrator he worked with in the 90s has resurfaced on Instagram last year (Howard Tangye), and had a huge influence on me Those videos show the respect for the creative process and intelligence behind design. I love the documentation and zoom calls; the historical/art research is so British. too bad working in American fashion is absolutely nothing like this cue Halston’s collection for jcPenny and you got the gist
Bliss this is an awesome video again ofc. I am actually happy about his Recicla line in Margiela ( replica + recycle). I am fascinated with Galliano’s Margiela however I am still looking fot that dirty guerilla unorthodox Margiela back in 2009. Maybe I felt like I didnt experience it enough because I was late to discover MMM but I wish to see more Margiela Community to be stronger ( like the RIck Owens cult is now). I felt there was a divide when Galliano stepped in. I agree the SWALK series is delicious. I can listen to him talk about fabrics and clothes all week haha.

Since galliano has taken over as creative director their profits have doubled every year since 2014. He has actually made the company profitable. When martin left the company it faltered because it had no direction, and galliano has given it a clear direction while maintaining the codes of rhe brand
The documentary in question was very good. I think I would have watched 3 more hours ! I have to admit I wasn't thrilled at first when Galliano was appointed. At the time, Matthieu Blazy was doing a good job and I was suspecting that Galliano 's powerful friends pulled some strings to got him back to work. When he was at Dior, Galliano gave an interview in witch he said that when he was making research for a collection around a certain woman for exemple, he would try to find what she would drink, what cigarettes she smoked or perfume she wore... I think that at Margiela, so far, it was really about just a traditional process of synthesis. In the documentary, at 23:17, he actually confesse that adding that he started to just do Margiela's own process witch means that he's really engaged in a journey from synthesis to symbiosis.

After the Dior incident Galliano changed forever. Read ''Gods and Kings: The Rise and Fall of Alexander McQueen and John Galliano'' by Dana Thomas (one of the most important fashion writers in my opinion, she exposed vogue and fast fashion etc) I believe you already read that but just in case :)
The reason THEY put John ( Anna Wintour) at that house is because after johns F*** up they found a place where the designer won't have to show his face ever again like Martin.
I love Alessandro's aesthetic and I feel like he never really makes a show that's a lot worse than the others because he's so confident in his style I don't even know if he has hit his peek yet
Galliano is just doing Galliano with Margiela, adding a touch of his eccentricty to the house. Though for me, it doesn't fit the ethos that Margiela has built through the years.
No one can fit that ethos other than Margiela himself. The only note he left for the next leader of the house when he quit was to "make it your own." Martin didn't expect anyone to continue exactly what he did either, so why do you want that?

Now these elements are always part of his works at Maison Margiela. For such a couturier like him, this must have been a big trade-off between what he used to be best at and the code of the house. He was also a big celeb designer, and he definitely loved being the center of attention (just watch any Dior Couture show during his time and see how he showed up). Now what? He embraces Margiela's concept of anonymity, and his appearance in media and the assertion of himself in the designs range from nothing to very low-key. How much should he still sacrifice?

It doesn't matter if this is more Avant-Garde than what he used to do if it's not far enough for what the house is/stood for. The very fact they even picked a "public" and "celebrity" designer was probably a mistake in the first place.
@@jcg_001 It's impossible to choose someone to replace Margiela because no one can be Margiela enough. John may be a controversial choice, but not a bad choice. I can't see any designer who can handle such a critically acclaimed house better than him. I agree that his approach is very different, but it's also very interesting and can totally compensate for the absence of the Margiela root. And I don't really feel sorry for him. I'm just happy that he found a place to continue his job. There are not many designers like him left who has a profound understanding of arts and cultures, and can actually sew, cut, and assemble clothes.
i think john galliano was the perfect successor at Margiela. i can’t think of anyone else that would even make sense. JW Anderson if he weren’t at Loewe? Daniel Roseberry if not Schiaperelli possibly?
I love Martin Margiela but I absolutely cannot stand the direction of Galliano and the house. All of the things they are doing in RTW are things that Martin refused to do such as having ready made suits on the regular, heavy logo branding, and even worse - graphic hoodies and sweatshirts! In addition, a lot of the textiles have gone to shit although I will say Galliano for Margiela does make great denim and good suits, most other things are hit and miss for me. At the end of the day, he was hired to generate more revenue, which he has been doing and why he is still at the house. Some things I see in his collections are quite beautiful but overall I feel a lot of the work I've seen is a poor reinterpretation of the house we once knew and loved. I would have much preferred Phoebe Philo who I felt would have been an excellent fit
Also I'd like to add that excusing his bigotry with his drunkenness is no excuse at all for the anti-Semitic remarks he made while at Dior. His to the re-introductory to the fashion industry in spite of his anti-Semitic rhetoric comes at no surprise though, considering both Gabrielle Chanel and Hugo Boss were Nazis (look it up!)!
As a designer I fell in love with John Galiano with these videos, I think any designer in the world would love to work in an environment where the design process is so rich and taken seriously, because in real life it doesn’t happen that much 🙈
I really dislike Galliano's work at Margiela. To me it has none of the soul, mindset or aims that the house used to have under Martin. Where is the focus on reinterpretating how everyday people dress? where are the shows that push the boundaries of what we would expect rather than just another group of models walking down a runway? Where is that feeling of family and humility the house once had? Where is the meta design? - wherein garments and techniques are recontextualised and repurposed to shock and surprise. Margiela imo has become a soulless corporate husk of itself - yet another samey expensive label with no connection to the real world. MM6 is slightly better on occasion but otherwise I don't think there's much worthwhile happening at MM.
Realised I should probably look at the positives as well. SWALK is absolutely step in the right direction, I hope they do things like this consistently from now on. I also don't think Galliano is a bad designer - he comes up with incredible pieces, I just don't think they fit the Margiela ethos.
I'm quite shocked that people choose to ignore his antics because he's a genius in some way, and even excuse or minimize them. you don't have to dislike his work, but excusing his actions (like some comments, not Bliss in this case) is the entirely wrong way to go about it. supporting a person with that past in such a nonchalant way seems baffling to me, especially in this day and age.

MM6 is a diffusion line. The quality is worse and the designs are usually simple ideas that are only made to sell well 💫💫

Galliano is just doing Galliano with Margiela, adding a touch of his eccentricty to the house. Though for me, it doesn't fit the ethos that Margiela has built through the years.
No one can fit that ethos other than Margiela himself. The only note he left for the next leader of the house when he quit was to "make it your own." Martin didn't expect anyone to continue exactly what he did either, so why do you want that?
@@CharlieBrownPTL Houses have themes and styles still. Of course nobody expects nor wants Galliano to copy Margiela but he should continue using the themes and mindset behind the house.
@@jcg_001 then maybe you don't follow what he's been doing closely enough. He was everything but deconstructionism and anti-fashion, and far from avant-garde. Now these elements are always part of his works at Maison Margiela. For such a couturier like him, this must have been a big trade-off between what he used to be best at and the code of the house. He was also a big celeb designer, and he definitely loved being the center of attention (just watch any Dior Couture show during his time and see how he showed up). Now what? He embraces Margiela's concept of anonymity, and his appearance in media and the assertion of himself in the designs range from nothing to very low-key. How much should he still sacrifice?

I know what Galliano was doing before as well btw. It doesn't matter if this is more Avant-Garde than what he used to do if it's not far enough for what the house is/stood for. The very fact they even picked a "public" and "celebrity" designer was probably a mistake in the first place.
@@jcg_001 It's impossible to choose someone to replace Margiela because no one can be Margiela enough. John may be a controversial choice, but not a bad choice. I can't see any designer who can handle such a critically acclaimed house better than him. I agree that his approach is very different, but it's also very interesting and can totally compensate for the absence of the Margiela root.
And I don't really feel sorry for him. I'm just happy that he found a place to continue his job. There are not many designers like him left who has a profound understanding of arts and cultures, and can actually sew, cut, and assemble clothes.

I love Martin Margiela but I absolutely cannot stand the direction of Galliano and the house. All of the things they are doing in RTW are things that Martin refused to do such as having ready made suits on the regular, heavy logo branding, and even worse - graphic hoodies and sweatshirts! In addition, a lot of the textiles have gone to shit although I will say Galliano for Margiela does make great denim and good suits, most other things are hit and miss for me. At the end of the day, he was hired to generate more revenue, which he has been doing and why he is still at the house. Some things I see in his collections are quite beautiful but overall I feel a lot of the work I've seen is a poor reinterpretation of the house we once knew and loved. I would have much preferred Phoebe Philo who I felt would have been an excellent fit
Also I'd like to add that excusing his bigotry with his drunkenness is no excuse at all for the anti-Semitic remarks he made while at Dior. His to the re-introductory to the fashion industry in spite of his anti-Semitic rhetoric comes at no surprise though, considering both Gabrielle Chanel and Hugo Boss were Nazis (look it up!)!

As a designer I fell in love with John Galiano with these videos, I think any designer in the world would love to work in an environment where the design process is so rich and taken seriously, because in real life it doesn’t happen that much 🙈
I really dislike Galliano's work at Margiela. To me it has none of the soul, mindset or aims that the house used to have under Martin. Where is the focus on reinterpretating how everyday people dress? where are the shows that push the boundaries of what we would expect rather than just another group of models walking down a runway? Where is that feeling of family and humility the house once had? Where is the meta design? - wherein garments and techniques are recontextualised and repurposed to shock and surprise. Margiela imo has become a soulless corporate husk of itself - yet another samey expensive label with no connection to the real world. MM6 is slightly better on occasion but otherwise I don't think there's much worthwhile happening at MM.
Realised I should probably look at the positives as well. SWALK is absolutely step in the right direction, I hope they do things like this consistently from now on. I also don't think Galliano is a bad designer - he comes up with incredible pieces, I just don't think they fit the Margiela ethos.

An astute observation.
I'm quite shocked that people choose to ignore his antics because he's a genius in some way, and even excuse or minimize them. you don't have to dislike his work, but excusing his actions (like some comments, not Bliss in this case) is the entirely wrong way to go about it. supporting a person with that past in such a nonchalant way seems baffling to me, especially in this day and age.
