Happy 90th Birthday, Metropolis :] Almost a whole century old and still the most modern looking classic ever.

A lot of people look down on Moroder's version, but they don't get that if it weren't for his version, the others probably would have never happened.

Moroder brought in a different audience (a younger one) with the score he attached. It also brought a renewed interest and a closer look at the film -often times it led to the discovery of more complete versions of the film. The Kino-Lorber version of 2010 is the most complete at 90%+. however Moroder's score cannot be beat. If the 2010 film can be combined with Moroder's soundtrack, that would be awesome.

This movie left a huge impression on me at 11 years old watching on a big screen and listening through a Klipschorn loundpeaker H-Fi surround sound system. I'd always leave the room during certain parts especially the grim reaper scene which used to scare the living crap out of me.

Moroder's idea to put a modern soundtrack to this classic film was genius! And he put a ton of time and money into restoring the film.
It is hands down my fave soundtrack of all-time. Hell, it's one of my favorite albums of all time. Whether or not "critics" approved of the end result, they had to admit that it was a pretty damn good attempt.

Moroder Put The Film Through The Meat Grinder With His Choice Of Tempo And Music. I'm Sorry, But Unfortunately, He Was Not Enough Artist, But Always Stood For Commerce. He Obviously Lacks The Feeling Or Empathy For The Mood Of The Film, Or He Never Understood It. His Work On This Also Takes Away Something Of The Expressionist Aesthetic. I Don't Want To Be Too Harsh, But For Me, It's A Kind Of Artistic Crime.

@@M.EngelhART I respect your point of view. I wouldn't argue with you in defense of Moroder's version of the soundtrack. It was not for everyone. However, how do you feel about the electronic score he recorded separately for the film? I wasn't aware of it until recently, so it may have been something he composed years after his original release of Metropolis.
Don't you think you are being a little too harsh on Moroder, as an artist/musician? I've heard that he was very influential in the disco and electronic genres of music. Some consider him a pioneer of electronic music. Do you think this is an issue of musical preferences or his abilities being overrated?
Does he represent commerce before, or after the fact? I don't think anyone expected the song writing he contributed to Top Gun in 1986, for example, to be as successful as it ended up being, did they?

Even if it didn’t work (and I’m not of that opinion), it still got people thinking about restoring the film even further, and because of it, we have even more complete versions of “Metropolis.”

It should still be available. This ended up getting re-released in theatres to celebrate Kino Lorber being able to cut through all the licensing issues and finally being able to release it.

OH i dig this. I had this on VHS as an 80s teen, watched it repeatedly.. FFing to the good parts. I think it informed my aesthetics a lot, that impeccably styled visual of the past with sleek electronic music. Which can be admittedly hit or miss- even a genius like Moroder could go for corny "stabs" or segments with the synths. But then a bit later it changes into something beautiful and STILL cool sounding. And then a minute later.. :)
I'm not even mentioning the rock songs, some are good but.. most very dated. ANYWAY this Moroder revival of Metropolis from the DEAD is so unfairly maligned. I'm so happy it exists. It was created in the MTV era for people doing cocaine in nightclubs in Europe and the US, "video!" was the thing in clubs, they needed "content" to entertain people having a good time. Not judging, they had fun then.
