Cheap RC Car Receivers from eBay? Testing the GoolRC TG-3 Alternative for Tamiya, Kyosho, HPI ...

  • For a growing collection of RC Cars I need a permanent radio transmitter and budget receiver solution. So since I already had a GoolRC TG-3 (aka the Austar AX-5S) I might as well start here, and test the cheap receivers available. But I would actually love to hear what you use, and how you keep the cost down on receivers?
    More waffling, info and specifications below!

    ----------------------
    Main footage of this video was actually filmed earlier this year, when we still lived in the city. So you can already find some test runs with the GoolRC TG-3 and Tamiya Levant and Kyosho DBX VE in my channel. Back then I got three receivers for the Tamiya Levant, HPI E-Firestorm Flux and Kyosho DBX VE, which I only now have finished all initial test runs with (last video with the Firestorm and DBX being edited as we speak). Everything went good, so currently I have more TG-3 receivers on the way.
    I am also looking forward testing the DumboRC X-6, send to me for review from Banggood and featured in the end of this video. Dual rates and a gyro! Perfect for the Tamiya Super Levant. Video coming up! In the meantime check out the specifications and link here: www.banggood.com/DumboRC-X6-2...
    I must say I prefer and really like my main radio, the Sanwa MX-V which I got a couple of, including a lot of compatible LRP and Sanwa receivers, but with the growth of my RC collection, the cost of these receivers are getting way too costly for me.
    So I have long ago giving up having a Sanwa receiver for each car, and currently use a lot of other systems from Carson, Traxxas, Suspect, Spectrum, Lansu and Tamiya (apart from the ones supplied in RTR models from WLToys and the likes) But I would actually like to minimize my collection of radios, making it all easier, so I am currently looking for an alternative to the Sanwa.
    Basically I am looking for a transmitter with dirt cheap functional and compact receivers. Since I already had the GoolRC TG-3 I might as well start here. The receivers are definitely very compact and in the acceptable price range.
    Not sure if this will be the one yet though. I need to test it thoroughly on more models and do some research for alternatives. Although the TG-3 transmitter has the basic features I need, such as a good steering wheel with foam, basic trims and reverse and especially the steering dual rate, it still is a bit too slim for me, and I would love a little more weight to it and "resistance" on the throttle.
    What I actually would prefer was a transmitter with the features of the Sanwa MX-V (model memory bank, display etc.) with just as cheap and compact receivers as the GoolRC. Maybe I should try FlySky? If you have some good recommendations I would love to hear from you in the comment section!
    I already did an unboxing and review of the GoolRC transmitter itself which you can find here: • GoolRC TG-3 (Austar AX...
    I also did a mini-series with a complete GoolRC brushless set-up, servo and radio. Here is the unboxing and part 1: • Tamiya DB-02 Project E...
    Since I also bought a GoolRC TG-3 for my son's Tamiya you can also find a lot of videos with it on our secondary channel, Nordic Hobby Visions.

    These Austar handsets are brilliant to use. The TG3 receivers are so easy to bind together that even my dog can use them haha. They are light and compact and don't take up a lot of room in the model you are using them on. The handset even has a 3 speed switch, Low, Medium and High setting making it ideal for beginners to advanced users. I use these transmitters for a lot of my kits that I use and I am very pleased with their performance. They are virtually bulletproof and have a greater distance than 100 yards as stated in the instructions (more like 200 yards!!) It takes about 5 seconds to bind together. I would recommend this product to other users.

    • @NordicRC
      @NordicRC  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I really like it. I just went through all my radios and searched for the one that had the cheapest receivers, and the GoolRC/Austar won, so gave it a shot :-) I have had no trouble with the performance too. Only one issue (with my son's TG3) - where the 'reverse' stops to function when using the throttle limiter, and setting it to low or medium. But if the ESC or motor is set to 50% reverse, that could explain why it stops to function. Thanks a lot for your interesting input, Peter. Good to hear your recommendation.

      @@NordicRC I've noticed that as well but for a cheap reliable handset, this has to be one of the best if not the best. I also use an Etronix Pulse EX2 Sport for my green van, also a reliable handset but only 2ch, a Flysky GT2B (for my VW Transporter) which is similar to the Etronix Pulse. Again only 2ch but very versatile and robust. The thing I like about the AX5 is it is ideal for smaller hands and it has the built-in fail-safe function. The receiver's are cheap and reliable.

    • @NordicRC
      @NordicRC  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, the grip is what got me to buy one for my son. Then he can feel as cool as his dad when we run with the same transmitters, and the grip feels both nice for his small hands and still not too small for mine. From the other comments I have been thinking about trying out the FlySky GT3C. Maybe the receivers from the GoolRC/Austar even fits. From the comments here and from what I can see in photos, the FlySky receivers for the GT3C look identical (except for the sticker of course). The GT2B looks very cool too, Peter. And yes, the fail-safe function is cool :-)

    Great video Mikael! I’ve always meant to whittle myself down to one or two radios for my fleet but it still hasn’t happened!😂 It’ll be interesting to see how these hold up over time, nice job!👍😊

    • @NordicRC
      @NordicRC  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, Jeremy! Yeah, my project with the Sanwa receivers failed, as the fleet got bigger and bigger. So will try again now, with a transmitter that takes cheaper receivers. With these I could get rid of 20 radios for 100 euro or so. 20 Sanwa receivers would cost me 1000 euro ... which I do not have or want to spend on receivers :-) So I just researched what radio I got that use the cheapest receivers and this was it, the GoolRC/Austar. Not sure it will be this one though yet, as the FlySky GT3C seems better, with the model memory and same receivers.

    I use a sanwa mt-s with all of my cars. Receivers can be had for £30 each. Can add up but you get the best feedback and settings with a sanwa. Plus it takes 6-7 models.
    Worth it in the long run for me.

    • @NordicRC
      @NordicRC  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice! Yeah, love my Sanwa MX-V, so I have been quite tempted several times to try out the MT-S or MT-4. But the telemetri and all the other features are just a bit too "racing spec" for me, and I know I won't be using it a lot (I do not race) so the MX-V has it all for me, for the hobbyist. But the MT-S and MT-4 sure are cool and look cool and like great quality. Yeah, the receivers for the MX-V are in the same price range, 40-70 euro. The MX-V got memory for 10 models, and I'm long past that and used them up. Got one more MX-V I could use, but I'm not rich, so looking for a good unit with very cheap receivers for a lot of models. So wanted to try this out, with receivers that cost 5-6 euro each, in order to minimize the radios.

    Cool! But man all those radios can drive you crazy..I would suggest getting a flysky radio they are inexpensive and work great and you can get them with multi model memory and use one or 2 radios for all your cars and the RX's are super cheap like like $6.00

    • @NordicRC
      @NordicRC  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Steve. Yeah, I have got rid of many, buying more and more receivers for the Sanwa/Airtronics, but man, can't keep it going, they are too expensive. So just searched through all my other radios to find the one that had the cheapest receivers, and the GoolRC won. Couldn't hurt to try, although I do miss my model memory like the Sanwa. So now the idea was to use the Sanwa/LRP receivers/transmitters for my upgraded dear ones, and then some cheap ones for the rest. Thanks for the recommendation, if you know of a specific good FlySky I would love to hear it. Never had one.

      @@NordicRC Hi I do the same I use my real KO PROPO 2.4 system in my fast rc's and all the rest I use a KO PROPO radio but I made a flysky modal that you can put in the back like how KO PROPO radios work and I have like 30 of my cars running flysky nut using my good KO PROPO radio. for the cheaper receiver flysky radios I think the FS-GT3C should be ok they have the older GT3B version also that runs on 8AA batteries I have this one but the GT3c is more modern and don't use 8AA's

    Those receivers are very much like the flysky I use with my bsima CR3p. I used to use Carson but they have get very expensive all of a sudden. £32 for a receiver Flysky £5 or less. But my new radio is the Absima CR6p a nice radio, will be using the cheaper flysky with it.

    • @NordicRC
      @NordicRC  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like there is a chance that they can be used for both a FlySky and Absima then. That would be great. Would love another secondary unit, with model memory just like my Sanwa. Really love my little Sanwa, but I just can't keep up with the prices for a Sanwa receiver. Around 40 (if you are lucky) to 70 euro per unit. And yes, I actually got a couple of the cheaper Carsons. I think the receivers for them are around 25-30 euro. Still 5 times more than the ones for the GoolRC. The CR6p looks very nice too! With 20+ model memory and all. That's pretty cool. And looks good too. And Gyro :-) Nice. Must consider that one, if I can find cheap receivers for it.

    It is not better to buy only one programmable transmitter? And one receiver to change in all cars? I got it like this, and save a lot of space. And It seems to me that the servo in levant is not very fast.

    • @NordicRC
      @NordicRC  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, showed the one I use in the beginning. The Sanwa MX-V. Love it. Good quality and not that expensive. The problem I have is that the RC collection is growing, and I just can't keep up buying the Sanwa/Airtronics receivers for the whole fleet. They cost around 40-70 euro/dollar per unit. So I am looking for some alternatives for the future right now :-) And yes, both the Levant and Super Levant come with standard Tamiya servos. Good quality, but not very fast, not very strong and with plastic gears (I think). But don't know if I will change them. It would be better to use the energy upgrading some of my bashers' servos.
