  • Take this very rare opportunity to take off and land at the long disused LEC Airfield with kind permission from current owners Sime Darby. See Bognor from the air, study the route of the new bye pass and housing developments.

    Amazing video- my dad was one of the pilots for LEC back in the day, I got taken there quite often. Even did work experience there.

      Hi Paul, LEC used to be a big part of Bognor life, everybody seemed to either work there or know someone who worked there. I never worked at LEC, but as a toolmaker, I spent a good part of my early working life making mould tools for fridge parts. Did you ever fly with your Dad from the airfield?

      +Timsvideochannel1 I did, they had an Islander aircraft there at the time, I seem to remember a big gas tower beyond the runway? It's a long time ago now! One of the owners used to keep an old Rolls Royce in the hanger, I remember sitting in that!

      Hi Paul, here is a link to a more recent flight (just click on it to open) .. th-cam.com/video/uaSa4P4R0bc/w-d-xo.html .. There used to be an old gas tower at the end of my grandmother's garden in Ivy Lane, I wonder if that is the one you saw? I remember seeing planes take off, but I never visited when it was a working airfield. Tomorrow (04.02.16) should see the opening of the new ring road, that will make a big difference to road congestion in the town.

    I can remember the Islander going off early in the mornings west of Flansham. My husband, a private pilot, always thought it might have been going to the Channel Islands. Great to see it is now being used again as a gliding club.

      LEC used to be a big part of life in Bognor at one time, with many working or knowing someone who worked there, so it is nice that a little bit of the old place is going to live on. Maybe the new owner will put together a collection of old photos and memorabilia to remind us of how it used to be.

      Thank you, I love to see the town I live in from above, it was not quite as I imagined, all the places that make up the area appear to much closer to each other from above.

    Very good Airfield! And Butlins resort has very interesting architecture. But this history: 'Between 1936 and 1966, ten camps were built, including one in Ireland and one in the Bahamas... Tough competition from overseas package holiday operators, rising operational costs, and rapidly changing demand, forced many of the Butlins operations to close in the 1980s and 1990s. Three of the original camps remain open under the Butlins brand in Bognor Regis, Minehead, and Skegness...' (Wikipedia) -- there is one more confirmation of the situation, about which you wrote to me earlier. It's sad! This is beautiful seaside town. Thank you for filming.

      Hi Chuck, I read your other comments with interest. I was pity that the cost of batteries at the time limited your ability to develop your electric glider. The nature of holiday camps has changed over the years, people want more from a family holiday these days. The Butlins camps that have survived are all successful today, offering family holidays in the season and themed holidays outside the main season. Having the camp in the town has been a real bonus because it is also open to local residents to use during the day for a moderate entrance fee. There are shows, a funfair, swimming pools and entertainment. I used to buy season tickets for my children so they could visit whenever they wanted, even when I was a child my parents used to buy winter season tickets. Bognor is a nice place to live, it is not so seasonal now, no massive crowds in the summer these days, visitors tend to be day trippers rather than holiday makers. There are still some holiday caravan sites around, but most have gone. I love living near to the sea, when I was younger we would go sailing, canoeing, fishing and swimming, now I just enjoy a walk along the promenade, although I still like to swim. Our politicians are still making a mess of things today, I don't think they could run a drinking competition in a brewery let alone run a country, but apart from them, life is pretty good in the UK. Its a little cooler and overcast today, only to be expected as autumn approaches. Take care. Tim.

      Hi again, Tim! About my e-glider I may says a bit, but just later (continued the theme there). And here I prefer now says a bit for seaside resorts, including ours (on Black Sea). I grew up on a flat terrain, the river was, but this can not be compared either to the mountains or to the sea! Since childhood, I've loved to being near sea (on vacation first of all), although I lived a little time in highlands too. Each of these natural elements is beautiful in its own way. Arriving not once, for example, in Neserb or in Bourgas -- on southern coast of the sea, -- I saw a typical life of cute: many vacationers, cafes and restaurants, sports grounds and other 'bubbling of life'. :-) I understand that living by the sea constantly, or at least for a long time (rather than having been there for 2-3 weeks, as maximum), you see much much "from within" and not from eyes of a resting person. In addition, at best, being there with a periodicity of one year. But even when I came to typical resort town, I noticed, for long period of time, noticeable even 'just by eye' changes in life, and at resorts -- too. After 1990 there was a clear decline. (Associated with the collapse of the 'Eeastern bloc'.) After 2000, on contrary, noticeable rise, and in local tourism -- too. But most notable, perhaps, "blow" to tourism in Bulgaria was the notorious 'economic crisis' of 2008!.. And then, years later, things were not going well. For a number of real reasons, even briefly that will not describe here, Bulgaria receives up to a third of its revenues from tourism, at summer Black Sea coast, and at winter ski resort. And we have something, although our town is not a ski resort, but rather a medical (pulmonary) resort, but the decline in attendance after 2008 was noticeable. Well, after a number of reasons, at last period -- too... In short, everywhere and everywhere there is a 'downward curve'!.. Such is life: 'se la vie', -- as French like says. :-) Take care. Chuck

      Good morning, Tim! Yesterday I'm forgot says about others moments around seaside holidays.
      In Black Sea, between Burgas city and Turkish border, has many sort small towns and resorts, especially suitable to family holidays. Because an athmosphere them are calm, just 'peaceful', -- have not there are typically 'crazy' tourists places. As we say, the 'crazy' turists zone are in Sunny Beach resort, hahaha. Many people prefer spend your vacation just there, and other -- here... :-)
      Take care, and have sunny day!
      P.S. Yesterday and here the weather turn up, such warm and dry again... :-) But I don't know it whether for a long time...

      Hi Chuck, I stayed on the Black Sea coast for 3 days in Burgas, we visited some of the other towns and a salt works railway along the coast. The places we visited were quiet, not commercial except for on place I have forgotten the name of, it was almost an island, a bit like a tourist town on the Italian riviera.

    • @chucksandos8939
      @chucksandos8939 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tim, the 'island', likely is ancient Nessebar town, near Burgas city -- to North, and near Sunny Beach (who is the 'crazi' turictical place) -- to South of it. And there are a 'maket' of windmill near the island, at road him. :-)

    Been wondering for years if it was still possible to fly from here! Great video, did a bursery at Southdowns and live just outside Bognor. Interesting to see that bypass from the air, even though it was a few years ago!

      Hi Dave, the Lec airfield is normally closed, but special permission was obtained from the owner to use it for a week or two. Hard to believe the new road is still not open more than 18 months later, it looks well advance in this video. I look forward to the complete bypass opening as it will make a big difference to those living along the present A259.

      The airfield is now recorded as "Live" by the CAA and is now an active airstrip governed by the various regulations re safety and notices etc. The new owner has pledged to keep the airfield open as an asset for the town and not allow it to be built on by property developers. The Gliding club website has more details.

    Very nice video and nice flying. I was born and raised in Bognor but have lived in Canada for the last 39 years. Really enjoyed watching this and the music was great too !
    Beautiful looking aircraft, nice to see the old airstrip being used. Any chance of a ride next time I'm over ??? : ) Cheers.

      imagine if one of those flimsy wings fell off while your flying about ? you'd be a hundred mile an hour fucked, barrell rolling into butlins big white tent, mind you could be worse you could end up in one of their crappy old chalets lol

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You haven't seen me fly a drone !!! Gliding is pretty safe these days, they use much better glue to hold the wings on. Having stayed in one of the chalets during my miss-spent youth, I certainly wouldn't want to crash into one.

      Timsvideochannel1 haha you're a good sport, stayed in a chalet in butlins north wales in about '94, as a teen and the chalet was like a prison cell it was that bad, shame as the park itself was one of the best ive ever been to.
