As a couple of others have mentioned, Captain America first appeared in comics a year before the US entered World War II. He was created by Jack Kirby and Joe Simon, and published by Timely Comics, one of the companies that would eventually become Marvel. Due to America's official neutrality at the time, the comics were considered controversial at the time, and Kirby and Simon received death threats from Nazi-supporters, reaching a point where New York mayor Fiorello La Guardia provided them with police protection and his support. During the war, issues of comics like Captain America were regularly sent out in care packages to soldiers fighting overseas, to help keep up morale - a comic was small, light, and cheaply-made, so it was easily packed into a soldier's gear and it wasn't a big deal if a 10c comic got damaged or destroyed. Soldiers are, arguably, one of the main reasons comic books became so popular.
Stan Lee was a writer on the Captain America series early on, and later an editorial assistant at Timely. Jack Kirby would collaborate with Lee repeatedly, as well as create numerous creations of his own, over the years, with only a brief interlude as a scout fighting in Nazi-occupied France in WW2 (his artistic skills were put to good use drawing maps and pictures for reconnaissance). Between them, Lee and Kirby co-created the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, Iron Man, Ant-Man, the Incredible Hulk, Thor, Black Panther, and many others.
During the 1940s, Captain America was regularly accompanied by his sidekick, Bucky, a teenaged ally based on Robin from the Batman comics, who the younger audience could identify with and who Cap could explain things to during stories.
While Captain America stories continued to be published through the 1950s, with Communists replacing the Nazi enemies of the original wartime run, when the character was revived by Marvel, it was decided that Cap had disappeared during the war and been frozen in ice, only to be revived when discovered by The Avengers. All his post-war adventures were retconned to have actually been a 'fake' Captain America, a different guy in the same costume. Similarly, it was decided that Bucky had died during the war, mainly because Stan Lee disliked the "kid sidekick" concept.

    • @Jessica_Roth
      @Jessica_Roth ปีที่แล้ว +3

It's also because in the 1950s, there was an anti-comics backlash, which included the implication that the "kid sidekicks" were victims of predatory relationships. While Batman was still popular enough that the idea he was exploiting Robin was dismissed by those who wanted to enjoy seeing him beat up criminals, Cap's popularity had died out once he no longer had Hitler to kick around and his book had already been canceled by the McCarthy days. (His brief mid-1950s revival notwithstanding.) So Stan didn't see any point in reopening THAT can of worms.

Fun fact about Captain America: his first appearance was in 1940, which featured him punching Hitler on the cover (which they referenced in the film) and was a full year before the US actually declared war against the Axis Powers. And while the character became very successful during the war, after it Captain America lost a lot of sales. They tried reviving the character in the 50s with Communists replacing Nazis as the main villains, but it was received poorly. That led to Stan Lee and Jack Kirby reviving the character for their 60s Avengers series (where he would replace the Hulk as a member) and creating the being frozen in a block of ice story as a way to cover up the 50s stories.

And thanks to repeated retcons, Steve's return from the ice has slowly edged his way from the 60s to 1984 😅

    History on Captain America
So Captain America first appeared in Captain America Comics #1 (March 1941) with the iconic cover of Captain America punching Hitler across the face. In the comic's Captain America was never frozen but continued throughout the 1940s to the 1950s fighting the "Reds" which of course was a massive topic in the 1950s. Many people tried to bring Captain America back but the comic's got cancelled because of the very political stances throughout 1950 and 1953. In 1963 when he was brought back they needed a way to retcon everything that happened after WW2 so they came up with the story of Steve being frozen until he is found in 1963 pretty much skipping over the end of the war and the 1950s which of course would retcon his Red bashing adventures. This gave birth to the character of Willian Burnside who took up the title and outfit of Captain America in the 1950s becoming who we saw in those original stories. He step down after the Korean War after America lost.
The Human Torch was actually Marvel, then known as Timely Comics first Superhero created in October 1939, featured the debut of the characters Human Torch, Sub-Mariner, the Angel, Ka-Zar, and the Masked Raider. Fun fact but you can actually see the original Human Torch here at 5:08 on the button right side on display. The original Human Torch was an android while the more well known Human Torch is Johnny Storm one of the members of the Fantastic Four who were introduced in The Fantastic Four #1 (Nov. 1961) decades later.
in the comic's Bucky also unfortunately died but instead of falling of a train he was blown up after his leg got caught on the plane (Actually looked alot like those aircraft at 26:45) of Baron Zemo who rigged the aircraft to blow, Bucky saved Captain America's life by throwing him off just before it exploded. Steve landed in the ice below which froze him for 20 years until he was found in the 1960s where most of the first comic's took place. Baron Zemo does not show up in this film instead we just have Red Skull who is really important as well. Overall love this movie has a very B movie feel to it mostly love montages etc just fun over the top action. The movie of course like most of the MCU brings all of these characters into the 2000s/2010s rather than the 1960s modernizing them.
This was also what the Ultimate universe did. In the year 2000 we got Ultimate Spider-Man which was a reimagined and modern take on Spider-Man bringing the character into the 2000s instead of the 1960s. This was followed by Ultimate X-Men in 2001 which was actually based more on the movie as the writer Mark Millar only watched the movie never read the comic's which made his rendition a little more political and darker even though the X-Men were always political to begin with focusing on racism. He also depicted the X-Men in a more dark militant look in terms of outfits which was a contrast to the Black leather worn by them in the films. Thankfully overtime they became closer to the Earth-616 counterparts. After Ultimate X-Men came The Ultimates in 2002 who are the Ultimate universe's version of the Avengers with Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, Wasp, Thor, and Giant Man.
The MCU is like a mix of Earth-616 (Main Comic Universe) and Earth-1610 (Ultimate Universe) mostly inspired by Earth-616 stories but it also takes some of the more modern designs from the Ultimate Universe and some Origin stories like linking Captain America to the Hulk's origin story with Banner in the Ultimate Universe being commissioned by Fury to recreate the super solider serum used to create Captain America which is very similar to the MCU Hulks Origin. In the main comic's of Earth-616 Banner was caught in the explosion of a gamma nuclear bomb when shielding a young kid/teen who wondered into the test site which fit the 1960s whole red scare era. This transformed him into the Hulk rather than him testing a serum on himself.

When Howard Stark finds the Tesseract, this is the basis for the big arc reactor he built that we see in Iron Man 1 & eventually Tony’s tech. That’s why when the Hydra laser weapons are fired they sound exactly like the repulsors on the Iron Man suits - full circle

Howard Stark being in theater and having his own plane is not unheard of from WWII.
Several high profile actors had The The distinguished military careers.
Audey Murphy, left Hollywood and became a tank commander, held off a German advance singlehandedly. When his tank was disabled.
He ordered his surviving men to fall back and get word to allied forces. Them mand the machine gun.
At least one millionaire flew his own fighter plane and had an honorary rank and achieved ace.

I can't with how adorable your intros are! I was excited for you guys reacting to this movie. I never knew much about Captain America before I watched this movie, but after I did, I grew fond of him. Part of it is honestly cause before the Super Soldier serum, Steve was short, scrawny and awkward and I could definitely relate to that so much 😂 But like Superman, he's a symbol of hope and justice. And really just wants to do the right thing and never give up. I also was laughing throughout the video with all you and Caleb's funny moments. I'm glad you enjoyed this movie so much! I can't wait for the next reaction. I think you're gonna have a lot of fun with the first Avengers movie!

32:33 Mark! Pulp magazines and comic (book) magazines were used as ship ballast and were only delivered if the ship survived the crossings of the oceans and seas. Since so many ships were sunk, that contributed to the scarcity of those periodicals and their value as collectables today. 🤔

Again, great reaction. When Meg started saying in the beginning how she is going to hate Peggy because everyone was saying how she was going to love Peggy ... I was about to go back to the Ironman 2 reaction and say that in a comment. (Then I quickly realized that you'd have already seen this movie and it would have been for naught.)
Also, I'm not sure if anyone mentioned this yet ... but in the scene where the grenade is tossed and Steve Rogers jumps on it to save the others ... if you notice in the background, Agent Carter is also running towards the grenade as well.
    Good job again you two.

9:43 Mark! Meg, you described "Doll Man"! A "DC" character that was about the size of "Ken"! 😮
By the way, Hayley Atwell, is in another spy series of some kind. You couldn't tell if she was a degenerate villainess or virtuous heroine, some times, along with the other cast. I think even the writers lost track and that helped it get canceled. 🤔 The actor that played the husband of Monica Potter's character and the father of their autistic son, in the "ABC" series "Brothers & Sisters", played the male lead. Now he's a fire chief in another "ABC" series unless it was canceled. 🤔
"Agent Carter" was made after that previous series. 🤔

Love these reactions! As many have pointed out already, I won't go into the history of the comics; however, there was a movie in the late 1970s (made for TV movie I think) about Captain America. There was also an Incredible Hulk television show and a Spiderman show that aired on TV when I was a kid. I saw re-runs of the Batman TV show and the Superman TV show as a kid as well. There is a very rich history of comic books that dates bake several decades. They pay homage to the actor who played the Incredible Hulk in the television series as the security guard at the college in the 2008 film..... same actor (Lou Ferrigno), which actually was a body builder and won Mr. Universe titles in the 1970s. Looking forward to this journey with you two!

Per the comics going back to 1941, Cap is basically at the peak human physical potential. So the strongest power lifter, the nimblest gymnast, the most co-ordinated juggler, the fastest sprinter, the greatest endurance runner all at the same time (which of course without the Serum is impossible). In the MCU they have probably bumped it up a bit so he is stronger, faster, etc than comics Cap traditionally is.

To answer a question you pose in your reaction, Captain America debuted in his own self titled comic in 1940, which was written by Joe Simon and drawn by Jack Kirby. Of the other marvel characters you've reacted to prior to this, the Hulk debuted in a self titled comic with the cover date of May 1962, written by Stan Lee and drawn by Jack Kirby. Thor debuted in Journey Into Mystery #83, cover dated August 1962, based on a plot idea by Stan Lee, but written by Larry Lieber and drawn by Jack Kirby. Iron Man debuted in Tales of Suspense # 39, cover dated March 1963, plot by Stan Lee, written by Larry Lieber, drawn by Don Heck.

5:28 In the comics Bucky was a young teenage boy who found out Steve Rogers was Captain America and was recruited as his partner. Which makes Bucky being kidnapped by the Russians and brainwashed into becoming the Winter Soldier a lot darker in the comics than in the MCU films.

Hey, Meg and Caleb! Chronologically, this is the first MCU film to date. I feel it's an overlooked gem that establishes so many future films and introduces the moral center of the Marvel Universe.
Much like in the film, Steve Rogers is a character plucked from a different era in Marvel's publishing history. In the 1940's, Marvel was known as Timely Comics and sought to produce a patriotic propaganda character to raise awareness of Nazi aggression in Europe. Writer Joe Simon and artist Jack Kirby came up with Captain America whose first issue in 1941 featured a cover that had Cap socking Hitler in the jaw! It was an immediate sensation and flew off the racks! Cap came with a triangular shield and a teen sidekick called Bucky but had the shield design changed to a circular shape in the second issue because of complaints of copying the triangular design of another company's patriotic character. A young staff writer called Stan Lee had Cap sling his shield as a trademark offensive maneuver in a text-only filler story in the third issue! As popular as the comic proved to be, it also drew criticism for its pro-war position as many Americans wanted to remain neutral in Europe's war. Angry protestors gathered outside Timely's offices and NYC Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia had to post police protection for the building. Simon and Kirby collaborated on the first ten issues. Decades later, when Lee and Kirby created the Marvel Universe in 1961, three characters were plucked from the Timely Golden Age and dropped into the Marvel Silver Age: the android Human Torch, Prince Namor of Atlantis and Captain America. The super-soldier was found by the Avengers in ice-bound suspended animation in the North Atlantic where he had disappeared thwarting an act of aerial terror at the end of World War II. The founding Avengers were Iron Man, Thor, Ant-Man, Wasp and Hulk but, after their discovery of Steve in the fourth issue, Cap became a mainstay of the team often leading them as Chairman.
Director Joe Johnston had experience with pulpy period earnestness with "The Rocketeer" and infuses this film with the charm of that one while also incorporating much of Cap's publishing history into the character's on-screen biography. The entire propaganda sequence brilliantly incorporates the Hitler punch and his triangular shield. His scrawny origin as a Depression-era kid from Brooklyn who likes to draw, his multiple attempts to enlist, his training under Colonel Chester Phillips at Camp Lehigh, Abraham Erskine's super-soldier experiment and his nemesis Red Skull are all very comic accurate. The cinematography has a desaturated sepia quality to it that evokes the past.
Marvel had a World War II-era comic called "Sergeant Fury and the Howling Commandos". Comic Nick Fury is a World War II veteran whose vigor has been maintained by a diluted form of the super-soldier serum called the Infinity Formula. The squad he led was a diverse group that consisted of bowler hat-wearing Boston Irish Timothy 'Dum Dum' Dugan, African-American Gabe Jones, New York Jew Izzy Cohen, Japanese-American Jim Morita, Italian-American Dino Manelli, Southerner Rob 'Rebel' Ralston, Brit Percival Pinkerton, German defector Eric Koenig and greenhorn Johnny 'Junior' Juniper. They were occasionally aided by French Resistance fighter Jacques 'Frenchie' Dernier. Fury's team answered to General Samuel 'Happy Sam' Sawyer who had a stony disposition. Johnston notably includes James Montgomery Falsworth's Union Jack as part of the team! Union Jack was a British nobleman and costumed adventurer during World War I who came out of retirement to lend Cap a hand in World War II. Despite an incomplete roster, Johnston brings the Howling Commandos to life fighting side-by-side with Cap!
The cast is incredible! This was Chris Evan's second stab at superheroics as Steve Rogers and he was reluctant to put on the spandex again. However, Robert Downey, Jr. convinced him and the role of Captain America fit like a glove. Sebastian Stan's brotherly love as James Buchanan 'Bucky' Barnes comes through as does Hayley Atwell's sympathy and fire as Peggy Carter. Stanley Tucci as Dr. Abraham Erskine, Tommy Lee Jones as Col. Chester Phillips, Dominic Cooper as young Howard Stark, Toby Jones as Dr. Arnim Zola and Hugo Weaving as Johann Schmidt aka the Red Skull round out the cast. Lending support as the Howling Commandos are Neal McDonough as Dugan, Derek Luke as Jones, Kenneth Choi as Morita, Bruno Ricci as Dernier and J.J. Feild as Falsworth aka Union Jack. Richard Armitage of "The Hobbit" ensures the serum will never be replicated as Hydra assassin Heinz Kruger. Natalie Dormer and David Bradley of "Game of Thrones" pop up in small roles as a man-eating WAC and a grizzled Norwegian, respectively. William Hope of "Aliens" has a bit part as the SHIELD officer overseeing Cap's excavation and Laura Haddock makes her film debut as an autograph seeker. Naturally, Samuel L. Jackson shows up as Col. Nick Fury to put in his two-cents.
The screenplay brilliantly integrates Howard Stark, substitutes the Tesseract for the traditional Cap MacGuffin, the Cosmic Cube, links the Tesseract to Asgard, ages up Bucky and incorporates Peggy Carter from comic Cap's wartime flashbacks. Erskine's pep talk the night before the procedure is so crucial as to why Steve is a hero and his benefactor's wisdom echoes throughout the rest of Cap's life: "Whatever happens tomorrow, you must promise me one thing: that you will stay who you are; not a perfect soldier but a good man." Steve's tactical acumen is demonstrated by his unorthodox solution to the flagpole challenge which earns him a ride with Peggy and her admiration. It's reminiscent of Alexander's brilliantly direct solution of slicing through the Gordian Knot. Of course, Steve's inability to quit against impossible odds represented by his boast "I can do this all day." comes full-circle for an amazing payoff at the saga's conclusion! Finally, Steve's forlorn "I had a date." is so laden with unfulfilled promise and poignancy.
    TRIVIA:
    1. James Howlett aka Wolverine and Max Eisenhardt aka Magneto were to have cameos as a soldier and as a concentration camp prisoner, respectively, but the characters were owned by 20th-Century Fox and could not be used.
    2. Hayley Atwell tentatively touching Steve's chest post-transformation was not scripted but was the actress' genuine awestruck reaction to Chris Evans' physique.
    EASTER EGGS:
    1. Encased in a glass chamber at the World Expo is Phineas Horton's Synthetic Man, the android Human Torch. This is one of the three Timely-era characters resurrected along with Namor and Cap for Silver Age Marvel Comics in the '60's.
    2. Kenneth Choi plays Howling Commando Jim Morita's grandson as well when he appears as the Principal of Peter Parker's school in "Spider-Man: Homecoming".
    3. Captain America autograph seeker Laura Haddock has been confirmed as Meredith Quill's grandmother since Haddock also played Meredith in "Guardians of the Galaxy". That would make her Peter Quill's great-grandmother.
    CAMEO:
    1. Stan Lee appears as a General at the Washington award ceremony where Cap is a no-show commenting on how he thought the super-soldier would be taller when he mistakes the panicked handler who rushes onstage for the Captain. Lol.
    END-CREDIT SCENES:
    1. The first end-credit scene is just an excerpt from "Avengers".
    2. The second end-credit scene is a sizzle reel of "Avengers".
The next chronological stop in the MCU is Season 1 of the "Agent Carter" TV series.

Agent Carter is not mcu canon, never mention chronological order again, its wrong

    • @oxhine
      @oxhine 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@carlmccartney1025 The Agent Carter One-Shot IS canon. If Meg would like more Peggy, the first season of "Agent Carter" is EXCEPTIONAL and only 8 episodes in length. It may not be strictly canonical but James D'Arcy does appear in "Endgame". Nowadays, to appreciate the MCU fully, one needs to have seen Netflix Marvel, Spider-Man films, X-Men films and Venom films!
There is nothing wrong with chronological order. Your indignation is absurd. James Gunn is on record stating that the "Guardians of the Galaxy" films occur within months of each other before "Age of Ultron". After "Civil War", the release order is completely haphazard and makes no sense placing "Black Panther" right before "Infinity War" when it occurs one week after "Civil War". "The First Avenger" can easily be seen first if you eliminate the two framing scenes set in 2011and save them for after "Thor". With a few minor tweaks, the chronological order is a perfectly viable alternative that SPOILS nothing.

@@oxhine you couldnt be more wrong, they spent almost 2 decades making this to watched in the order it came out, that's how it makes sense, if you watch chronological order you'll know about the snap and black widows death way before you need to

@@carlmccartney1025 Carl, please don't spoil developments with your comments. I recommend you DELETE YOUR REMARK!
I said that, with a few minor tweaks, you can view the series chronologically. One such tweak would be not seeing certain end-credit scenes. You can watch "Black Widow" which begins during "Civil War", "Black Panther" which occurs one week after "Civil War", "Spider-Man: Homecoming" which occurs two months after "Civil War", "Doctor Strange" whose latter half occurs in the year following "Civil War" and "Thor: Ragnarok" which also occurs later in 2017 IN THAT ORDER and the only adjustment needed is to NOT SEE the "Black Widow" end-credit scene set in 2024. It's so simple and nothing is spoiled. You could even watch "Ant-Man and The Wasp" before "Infinity War" since they occur concurrently and the only adjustment required is NOT SEEING the end-credit scenes until AFTER "Infinity War". It's not rocket science and the story flows smoother.

this is my favorite origin film just because of all the heart thats poured into it and because Cap is my favorite avenger because of who he is as a person thats what makes Cap great is that even without the serum he would still try and help he would still try and fight for the greater good i love how you both saw how this film wasn't necessarily a pure patriotic film of American propaganda it was a film about The Cap after all all he wanted to do was help and fight and be a soldier himself alongside everyone else it just so happened that now he was a super soldier but even better he was still Steve under all that its as Bucky said
"Im gonna follow that kid from Brooklynn"
to me the original big three represent these to me
Iron man is the face of Marvel he started it he has that seriousness and charm as well to get people engaged and he deals with very human threats or things
Thor is the soul of Marvel he is a god from another planet that comes and helps earth now and again but its his story thats very human and grows to be even more human and tragic as time goes on that makes us relate to him more and more he is powerful and love-able and grows as a person each time we see him
    but Steve
Steve is the heart of Marvel in Steve we quite literally see ourselves we see the small guy the outsider the one who was always bullied and in the end just wanted to be the good guy and help and who in the end will always do the right thing no matter the cost to himself i think in the end as much as people would love to be Ironman the rich tycoon who has an awesome suit or even Thor who is a god with powers and an awesome weapon we secretly all want to be like Cap.....totally selfless and heroic to a fault and we see these themes for each of these characters go on as the MCU expands cant wait form yall to see it all!

Although I admit Black Widow, Captain America, Thor and Hulk are yes somewhat tolerable but just looking at this wannabe hero Iron Man gives me a headache but that's just my opinion. I prefer to stick with my DC heroes but like I said I just love your videos.

I love when geek discussions get philosophical, and this one is of particular interest to me. There's a lot of debate about America and it's role in the world. My personal take on it is shaped by the fact that I'm a child of immigrants. I think that for all its faults, and America does have a lot of faults, America represents for a lot of people a chance for better, a chance to be better, liberty and justice for all. Captain America is meant to embody that. You know, I would love to see you two react to Casablanca (1942), an at the time look WWII.

Oh, and it's not a coincidence that Dr Erskine was a German Jew. The character of Captain America was created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, born Hymie Simon and Jacob Kurtzberg. Both were the American born children of Jewish immigrants from Europe. So was Stan Lee.
