Dreamer once said that working with Jerry Lawler was one of his favorite moments of his career. He said he has never seen another wrestler get so much heat from the fans that Lawler did when he went to ECW. It made him proud to be part of it.

The issue between Heyman and Lawler was not just because Heyman refused to take a bump. He had been asked if he would do it weeks beforehand, and assured Lawler that it was no problem. Then when it came time to take the bump off the scaffold, he chickened out. When they got backstage, Lawler punched him in the face and broke his jaw.

I remember at the time when all the buzz was going on about ECW, trying to find out when to watch it. My local cable company didn't carry the network that it was on. When there finally was a network that carried it, the show that they carried was this toned down, half hour recap show that was all highlights of matches, and promos. And they would have one match per episode. It wasn't a very entertaining show. On top of that issue, the show was always on at different times, or getting cancelled to put something else in. You would watch it one week, and the next couple of weeks, it would be gone, and then it would be on again, but at a different time. There was just no way to watch it properly with the cable service that we had. I'm assuming that the people who ran our cable service had an issue with the content. When the ECW invasion happened, I had no clue who any of these people were, and Lawler's involvement kind of turned it into one of those clown shows that annoyed more than entertained. There were some great ECW guys and matches, but Vince wasn't at all willing to really let them go all out and do the things they were doing in ECW. On top of that, Vince had this thing of, every time a guy showed up from another organization, no matter what, they would always be portrayed as C-listers compared to the WWF guys. If he let Sabu go all out against someone like Matt Hardy, it would have just been amazing. But Vince was VERY protective of the portrayal of the WWF guys compared to everyone else.

Vince is a smart businessman. He knew that WWE needed to get a bit edgy and so brought in ECW and incorporated some of its elements in such a way that mainstream audiences accepted it. Ecw was never going to be accepted by mainstream audiences. So the attention they got from this deal did not give them any benefit.

True but I'd say Heyman was smarter when WWE brought ECW they payed the debts after becoming bankrupt and Heyman getting a job with WWE as well as the money given to ECW during the invasion

ECW was on Vince's payroll purely because they were a developmental territory for the WWF, cherry picking talent, nicking ideas and sending guys down there to polish up or get a fresh paint of coat (as Bruce Prichard would say), which made total sense, especially as the ECW guys were used to getting paid peanuts and happy to get a chance to jump to a bigger company where the cheques wouldn't bounce. Also of course ECW were happy for national prime time exposure, so everybody wins

AEW and Tony Khan needs to careful of WWE potentially opening the door to them, as a way to poach talent like they did with ECW. Vince is already planting the seeds with the Austin/Jericho podcast

I remember being in school I the early 90s when people started talking about a wrestling organization called ECW that wasn’t anything like the WWF or WCW. My classmates were talking about how violent, bloody, and real it was compared to the other two. But it came on early in the morning like at 1 or 2 am or something like that at the time. When I was able to finally watch it, it was more than I could have imagined. ECW was a much different animal than I was use to from what I watched in the 80s of the WWF, WCW (Jim Crockett Promotions), and stuff from the NWA.
