Exploring the Small Island Town of San Pedro, Belize (Ambergris Caye)

  • Although the water front part of the island of San Pedro, Belize has gorgeous views, there is more to the island than that. Behind the beachfront resorts lies a small town of shops, homes, a school, etc. We hopped in the golf cart and drove around the town stopping in a few of the shops and even a fantastic bakery!

All of the produce is shipped in via a barge that arrives daily from the mainland. That’s in FULL SUN. 90% of the milk I bought was sour and I was advised to avoid the chicken as it is prone to thawing during the crossing. Hygiene in Belize is well below standard. All of those pastries for example that included meat and chicken were in that glass cabinet which was not temperature controlled. It’s 30 degrees outside and the stores don’t usually have AC. Plus the meat and sweet pastries were in the same glass box. This is not uncommon there. In the west, a business would get closed down for this. Hence I never ate that rubbish sitting in the hot sun all day 🤮. According to wiki, Belize has the 5th highest murder rate in the world. San Pedro is not as bad as the mainland, but it still can be dangerous.

Yeah there are certainly things to watch out for, but just talk to the locals and they’ll help you out with all of that. Everyone there is super nice and helpful :)

Some people have no imagination. You probably prefer war and turmoil as opposed to freedom and tranquility or bliss. To each their own.
