Thank you for the video! I watch your videos, I'm from Russia, from Siberia. I also own such a car. I have FZJ 80 1995, gas equipment costs extra, gas is two times cheaper than gasoline.
Great video man! Getting ready to do one of these soon and just wanted to get a slight overview of what's involved. Is it possible to do this job without removing the head? I remember doing a few timing chains on the 22RE and i was able to do it without removing the head. Well I've done it both ways. But I've definitely been able to slip the cover out without taking the head off
You might be able to. I've never tried. Never wanted to risk the potential leaks. Unlike the 22re the cover is glued on. I think it'd be hard to not smear the sealer and cause leaks.
Hi there love your channel I have a question I have a 1994 1FZFE engine I had a lower sounding knock and I pulled the oill Pan and checked all the rod bearings and they all look great wondering what else I could be missing.
With the engine still in you have to lift the engine up a few inches to get the upper oil pan out. It gets stuck on the brace for the panhard bar otherwise.
@@OTRAMMthanks Ryan, yeah I jacked it hard up against tranny tunnel threw in two 30 mm timbers at the mounts and got the clearance safely secured, , of course- I heard the rumour the sway bar needs to be removed, and they were correctamoondo
Hi Buddy....how are You???....Have a quick question...my 96 FJ80 it rattle for 1 or 2 seconds when starting engine..........it do it when engine get cold.....if I start it again it will rattle for 1 second........Do You what it can be??....... Thanks
your videos are excellent. on my 94 1fzfe, my timing chain & gear broke on the hiway. am doing a timing chain & head gasket per your video. was trying to line up cam marks but the cams are locked up & won't turn. would remove the cams but don't know how to insert the bolt to hold the spring loaded exhaust cam. basically the head is locked up but the engine crankshaft pulley marks will turn & align to tdc. any ideas ? all i can figure is bent valves even tho its supposed to be a non interference engine. was running great before it happened but had a litttle clatter. even if you can't reply thanks again
I've never run into a 1fz with stuck cams. The only time I've run across that was a severely overheated Honda head that warped enough to bind the cams in their journals. I'm pretty sure the exhaust cam spring can be reset if you remove the cam without the lock bolt. I've never done it though. It almost sounds like you cams seized and then the chain broke. Any oil pressure issues before they popped?
not that i know of. gonna drop the pan & remove timing cover & look at everything & crank shaft rotation. will have to remove cams & head & have a look. thanks for getting back & i'll let you know what i find. this engine has 185k miles. thanks again@@OTRAMM
gotta put on the dumb bunny hat. i forgot to remove the spark plugs. when i discovered my error i had already removed the cams but there was no damage to the bearing surfaces. head is off now & now waiting for valve spring compressor to. strip it down to send for machining. i guess then i'll find out if valves are bent but probably not & the cams weren't frozen it was just that i didn't try to force them to turn. well good luck to me, guess i'll see but there was no damage to timing cover. thanks for your fine work
Mine recently got the same leak by the oil pump at the mating surface to the block... I’m around 230k... well and she’s 22 years old haha. Can’t be too upset.
@@OTRAMM that would be right. Got the head off due to burnt valve and chasing oil leaks. Decided to pull motor and do rear seal while I'm at it as has been leaking
Hey Ryan, Would you say it could be done if you removed the oil pan while in the FZJ? Mine is leaking in the same place. Total hack job that was covered in oil when I went to check it out. I thought it was the pump seal and crank over a number of years.. Not true....
It can be done in the truck but it's not fun. You've got to lift the engine to get the upper oil pan off. And you're upside down trying to clean the mating surfaces well enough for the sealer to stick.
This is a great video. Do you have a video of someone slapping the crap out of the person who designed an engine that you have to take the oil pan off to get the timing cover off? Just asking
OTRAMM I pulled the pan on my fj80 and found similar shavings and plastics chunks. Compression 150-155 on each cylinder. Don’t know if should go ahead and get this done on mine?
My swivel guide 10 hex bolt was super mega gorilla F’ing tight. Nearly same effort as harmonica bolt which was mind boggling arm wobbling pipe extention tight beyond belief. Maybe someone at Toyota make a mistake that day?
just adding a tip.... be careful with that oil float sensor. the float is thermoplastic and very brittle, and they can break or chip easily....so be careful taking them in/out and dont drop it. they can be difficult to find used, and are expen$ive at the dealer. Ive lived it and learned, lol.
This is heaven send. Just started this in my 93 last night. In the truck. Definitely need assembly vid too.
Filming assembly now. Should have it edited this weekend
Are the 2 front smaller sized head bolts suppose to have washers on them or just the flange bolt itself?
@@secretaryoftips520 I'm pretty sure just the flange bolt. I'm out of town so I can't check right now.
So glad to see you got this video started I an doing head gasket and all the stuff on the front of the motor as well WJR
Shooting the reassembly as soon as the camera batteries are done charging :)
Your video's are always informative. Thank you.

Can you do a video on tightening up the steering play? Thanks for your videos, you’re doing an awesome job!
Question, if the engine is still in the vehicle, do the two pans come & go back in okay? Or are we saying a few hail Mary’s and knuckle bandages?
With the engine still in you have to lift the engine up a few inches to get the upper oil pan out. It gets stuck on the brace for the panhard bar otherwise.

First guess would be slack in the timing chain until it builds oil pressure. It's hard to really say without hearing it though.

Quick question. Does the timing chain on the iFZFE need replacing at certain intervals? Thanks
There's no set interval on them. I've never seen one wear out. I've only seen them break the guides.

Hi. Is it possible to get the timing cover off with sump on, head off and studs removed from bottom of timing cover.
Nope, the oil pick up bolts on from inside if I remember correctly.
@@OTRAMM that would be right. Got the head off due to burnt valve and chasing oil leaks. Decided to pull motor and do rear seal while I'm at it as has been leaking

how many miles has that engine done?
I want to say around 270k. By the looks of things they've been hard miles.
@@OTRAMM wow, looks like its been neglected of oil changes in its life....
My 1fzfe has just clocked 407000km, and is near due to be rebuilt.
Still would be able to replace with engine in car?
It's way easier to do out of the truck. You have to lift the engine anyway to get the upper oil pan out.
Awesome
Do you have to pull the oil pan to do the timing chain?
Yes
Can I send mine to you? Im in NC
Send the shop an email and Cody can set you up. OTRAMM@otramm.com
I have an fzj 80 I'm doing a head gasket on and the cross hatch is gone on the sides. Not really scored just..smooth . Do I need to worry?
How many miles are on it? Is it burning any oil? Usually we see them with even crosshatch all the way around.
This is a great video. Do you have a video of someone slapping the crap out of the person who designed an engine that you have to take the oil pan off to get the timing cover off? Just asking
Could I remove the head only and just leave the upper oil pan on to get to the timing chain?
I haven't tried it that way.
Great stuff!! really appreciate it and am donating to keep you going.
Do you ship OEM parts (if available) for this engine?
I could ship parts but I just get them from my local dealer as needed. There's likely online dealers that would be more efficient at it than me.
Where your shope ?
Bealeton, VA. About an hour Southwest of Washington DC.
Aren’t those chunks in the oil pan concerning at all?
They are a bit. Judging by the rest of the engine they were sludged up oil.
OTRAMM I pulled the pan on my fj80 and found similar shavings and plastics chunks. Compression 150-155 on each cylinder. Don’t know if should go ahead and get this done on mine?
@@Strong_Opinions I'd be concerned about hard chunks and shavings. The stuff in the bottom of this pan was coked up oil so not actual bits of engine.
My swivel guide 10 hex bolt was super mega gorilla F’ing tight. Nearly same effort as harmonica bolt which was mind boggling arm wobbling pipe extention tight beyond belief. Maybe someone at Toyota make a mistake that day?
I've had several of those that were beyond stupidly tight. No idea why.
@ cool to know I’m not alone thinking my 80 is possessed, lol

Haven't made that mistake with the oil float yet, but I've definitely snapped knock sensors that were old and brittle. Thanks for the tip!!
FIRST!
Must the crank case cover be off before you remove timing cover?
Yes, there are two head to timing cover bolts inside.
@@OTRAMM thanks thought as much
