Rooney vs Maresca: Rooney mercurcial youth talent that lived up to most of the early hype but then sort stagnated but was still one of the best English players of his generation. Retired around 36-37 played less and less after struggling with injuries from 32 on wards. Immediately was promoted to Senior Management for the last team he played for second tier relegation side Derby. Failed at Derby, underwhelmed at DC United, Failed at Birmingham and Plymouth. Maresca 5 years older than Rooney was considered the last of Italy's declining number 10's star at U21 Level but couldn't really find his position in senior football. Became a stable first team regular for top-tier mid-table sides in Spain-Italy. Finished his career in early 2017 . Despite being a 10 and being thought of as creative intelligent player. Maresca didn't jump in at the deep end. He joined the coaching staff at Ascoli whilst getting his badges in Italy, Ascoli neither overwhelmed or underwhelemed. After getting the badges he at some point became more of a number 1 than number 2. Still mediocre results at best. After 3 year of ok results he joins Manchester City reserves. Develops players like Palmer, Foden etc wins the Reseve League and cements City position as one of the best youth sides 2021. End of 2021 after back to back reserve league wins he joins SErie B team Parma who is still recovering from a adminstration and bankruptcy. Fails to get them promoted and get fired. He then jumps back into City becoming part of Pep backroom before taking the Leicester job and in the middle of a great re-build stabelise them and gets them promoted. So in 2021 we have Maresca 5 years older with 5 years of backroom experience and Rooney with a shakey relegation at Derby. Still Rooney is talked about for roles in the Championship. When Maresca finally gets his role in the Championship in 2023 he overperformens. But comes with experience since retiring from football he has 1. Sounds just like Portsmouth to me. It's 160 miles away.
Why did they appoint him 😂😂
I told you so moment from an awful lot of football supporters across the land. Not to worry he'll be back in the studio repeating what the last person just said in his own vocabulary.
Why doesn't he take an assistant coach job and learn the trade like every top manager does.
Just shows a footballer might of played the game but doesn't make them a good manager, coach or pundit
The title was kinda misleading did he leave or was he sacked? Regardless it was long coming.
And people thought Steve Bruce was bad.
Got a lot of time for Rooney as unlike certain pundits who are the best managers who never have. He tried and failed, it happens, but he will learn and come back stronger.
Speaking as a Birmingham fan this was far from Rooney’s gamble. Plymouth were the only side prepared to hope that Rooney might have some sort of clue as to how to manage a club and of course he took it. Surely now Wayne should just enjoy life and accept that he ain’t no manager. Nothing against him personally but at Birmingham he was an utter catastrophe in every sense. Can’t help thinking he may well get an offer down the line from some troubled club but hey let’s see!
Wayne if you want to create a legacy start an academy instead of relegating football clubs.
too scared to say he is never going to be a manager and need to never think of doing it again. You are cowards because you don't like to upset your big friends.
A question though did he certify as a coach or it was purchased
Ex world class players rarely make good or even average managers and hardly ever a world class manager. Only exceptions can think of are Antonio Conte & Real Madrid manager. Stick to being a pundit Wayne easy money less stress. Fair play for having a go though more than Carragher did.
He took the job because it was his only option… his managerial career is done before 40.
How does this guy keep getting hired as a Coach?
Most man u spanks world take him before southgate god bless us they go down
Sam reporting live from the jungle after doing a bushtucker trial
I'm delighted for Wazza.
He's shown the doubters up for what they are and flopped again like Fat Frank and Slippery Steeevie.
In fairness to Slippery Stevie he's taken them for a fortune over in Saudi Arabia.
Hopefully Wayne can save himself the stress and settle in as host of Match of the Day........ obviously.
Back on the overlap ❤
He is *NOT* Management material.
The proprietors of various knocking-shops around South Devon will be crying into their New Year beers upon hearing this tragic news. They must have been doing a roaring trade thanks to Romping Rooney...
Where Rooney goes from here? The nearest karaoke bar I'd imagine 😂
His wife said in the documentary that he has to ,have an eye kept on him because of his poor self discipline so how he can keep a football team in order🤷🏻♀️
Watch them improve with a new manager
Guys, let's face the facts!! He's useless as a manager. Getting your "badges", means nothing. Clueless manager, amazing footballer. But he'll keep going as all these ex-players do. And most of them are awful!!
25.3% win rate as a Manager across 4 clubs.
The Argyle job is a difficult one due to location and the budget the club operates on. But Rooney was never going to do anything but take the club down because Rooney is not suited to football Management.
@matthewdoyle3628 I think he is but went too high early on..nice little leauge 2 job for a few and build it up.
A no name manager would be excused at Plymouth. He should have taken a job with better players.
cant see him getting another managerial position
Exactly. Take the Celtic job please Wayne
Give Wazza the utd job till end of season... couldn't be any worse
Least Rooney can enjoy a New year drink tonight now .
Daft idea to give him a 3 year contract given his record
Can’t wait to hear Simon Jordan on this!
They might be the worst team I've ever seen at this level. Worse than Rotherham that got battered every week last year
Like Gerrard, he has no managerial skills at all. He is a name. A name that gets you nowhere.
Why oh why do clubs keep employing him plymouth deserved better great players do not make great coaches
