LA Phil Rehearsal with Gustavo Dudamel: Felix Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 3

  • In 2011, the Los Angeles Philharmonic presented LA Phil LIVE - a series of live simulcasts that included full-concert performances with the orchestra, led by dynamic Music and Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel, live from Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles and Dudamel's home nation of Venezuela. LA Phil LIVE provided fans with access to a unique concert experience that included backstage access, Q&A with Gustavo Dudamel and guest artists and guest artists as well as special hosts and more.
    In this clip from the first LA Phil LIVE of the 2011/12 season, Gustavo Dudamel explains to the orchestra how to "attack" a particular passage from Felix Mendelssohn's "Scottish" Symphony.
    As you will see, Dudamel is seeking to create a "heart attack" sensation amongst concertgoers through the sheer power of the orchestra when it attacks in unison. As the rehearsal progresses, he's not quite getting what he's looking for. Thankfully, Dudamel himself didn't have a heart attack!
    Composer Felix Mendelssohn came from a famous family. His grandfather Moses was a preeminent philosopher. Mendelssohn wrote some of his greatest works - the Octet and the Midsummer Night's Dream Overture, for example - as a teenager.
    Experience the music of Mendelssohn LIVE at the Hollywood Bowl on July 28, 2015, when the entire incidental-music score for Midsummer Night's Dream will be performed by Gustavo Dudamel and the LA Phil! Details and tickets available now at www.hollywoodbowl.com/midsummer.
    Pleasing to the ear and deft in its use of the orchestra, Felix Mendelssohn's music won him acclaim throughout Europe during his lifetime. However, it also gained him a reputation for being the most conservative of the Romantics. His work as a conductor, in fact, played a large role in reviving music of Johann Sebastian Bach in the 1800s. As a conductor, Mendelssohn was responsible for the revival of Bach's music in the 19th century. Many of Mendelssohn's later works - such as the oratorio St. Paul and the "Hymn of Praise" Symphony (No. 2) - owe much to the Baroque master.
    For a complete rundown of when and where you can hear Felix Mendelssohn at the Hollywood Bowl and Walt Disney Concert Hall, visit www.laphil.com/philpedia/felix... and consult the schedule on the right-hand side of the webpage.

    Notice that he is conducting without a conductor's score? And the passion, the hard work, the drive. It is unsurpassed in the 21st Century. In two-and-a-quarter minutes, he has pulled the opening chord of the Allegro vivacissimo as strong, dynamic, and passionate chord from the orchestra, who thought it was the bland, ordinary one that so many orchestra leaders around the world think that it is.

    • @mjs8146
      @mjs8146 5 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      If you look closely, he's got a tiny study score on the stand. I presume he'll be conducting from memory at the concert.

    • @Azishome
      @Azishome 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      +MJ S., thank you for your observation. I don't think that's a score. I believe that simply contains notes. I have never played in orchestras approaching the prestige and magnitude of the LA Philharmonic, but in the ones I have, the conductor always had notes beside the score and would consult them from time to time. If it is a tiny score, then I stand corrected. Again, thank you.

    • @mjs8146
      @mjs8146 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From my experience, the study score is really just to facilitate rehearsal and to contain the notes ahead of time. I've also seen it used by conductors when works are prohibitively expensive to purchase (a lot of Shostakovich's music comes to mind since the 1990s) or also as a supplement to a larger score. For an orchestra like the LA Phil, I doubt notes would be truly necessary for a warhorse like the Scottish Symphony, but what's tipping me off is the fact that the paper on the stand appears bound and it does not look like a standard letter size piece of paper. Thanks for your reply!

    You can hear the difference. I've listened to this in full by other orchestras on TH-cam, and they attack the first note in the way that Mr. Dudamel says is wrongly interpreted. So the standard for this piece is The Los Angeles Philharmonic under the direction of Gustavo Dudamel. Bravo, Dudamel.

    If this distinguished conductor is, as he is right now, what will he be like in future years? how can he be any better? He is a fireball of energy and enthusiasm, and knows how to project this to the players. They are exceptionally lucky to have him. All the great orchestras of the world are clambering to have him as a guest conductor - even in Vienna and Berlin which is amazing.

    What a beautiful job Dudamel does here. I remember sitting under Andre Previn in the late 1980’s. Sometimes the LA Phil played in spite of his conducting. Andre would be off some nights. The percussion section had a Time magazine on their stand. Good to see Dudamel keeping them on their toes.
