What is a ladder tender?

It takes the small calls for the big ladder. Crews for the tender are cross staffed with the big ladder. The captain decides when to take the big ladder and when to take the tender. For example on a medical, the tender will go. But on a reported working fire, the big ladder will go. It reduces the wear and tear on the big ladder basically. Makes the big ladders harder to catch.
