For people who don't do armored combat and are just larpers looking for some good information there's a lot of good information here. But bear in mind for lighter larps the biggest thing is pay attention to the same materials. You don't want cotton poly blends for LARPing either so surprisingly a lot of people have been using moving blankets dying them and sewing them into gambesons to a surprisingly good effect
I would love to get into this sport. My wife thinks I'm nuts. I'm 59 years old, and have had several back surgeries so its probably not gonna happen. I would want a pretty thick gambeson. I may have to just be a spectator. I live in Logan, and will have to go to see your events. I played football, and wrestled in High School. I was a Cop, and was darn good at fighting. Until I took on two big Tongans one night. I got them both in handcuffs; but screwed up my back in the process. I would definatly be a tank.
This was awesome and probably one of the most informative videos I've watched on the subject. Thanks so much for explaining all of this, it was super helpful!
Open armpit gambeson I used historical made by ulberth it has great mobility and heat release down side you feel getting hit in that open gap even with mail over it doing hema
Great video guys, tips that really helps begginers like me! Looking foward to test this spray with the brazillian really strong booze "cachaça" haha... Please continue upploading useful contant like this and greetings from Brazil! 🇧🇷✌
ngl until someone bumped into the red gambeson on the right i was sure that it was just a croped picture of one the editor had put on there as an example....
I really appreciate this video. I was honestly going to just order a Gambeson off of Amazon. But these gambesons in the video are all made to combat blunt weapons correct? How many layers would you want if you were trying to be protected from sharp weapons? If I do get armor it will probably be mail. But I’m hoping a gambeson would suffice in a self defense scenario. I want a warm winter jacket that can double as protection from sharp objects.
Realistically you'd need a super thick gambeson to even possibly stop a proper sharp weapon. Something like a 4 layer which would never be realistically worn and at that point is now pretty similar in thickness and strength to one of those attack dog training sleaves.
@@saltlakecitycrusaders9811 modern problems call for modern solutions I suppose. A hoodie made from Kevlar or Dyneema would make for a better garment to protect against knives. Would be interesting to see a gambeson made with Kevlar. Thanks for the response!
One question that I now have is, how do you deal with compleatly soaked and muddy gambesons? You mentioned that washing it (even in cold watet) isn't recommended. But where I live it is often raining and the ground is completely soajed and muddy. I am very new to bohurt/hema so i am still trying to learn as much as possible before getting any gear. Anny advice would be greatly appreciated :) Kind regards Adrian Scheffler
After considering the material cost and price increase from relatively niche demand, you’d probably rival that of the steel armor it would be under, unfortunately
This is awesome thank you for this info As a complete beginner and on the heavier side with wide shoulders what size should i choose ? I usually wear XL to XXL in shirts, jackets and other clothes, how do i choose the perfect size for a gambeson ?
Frequently places will make gambesons to exact tailored measurements. Stock ones you'll just have to do you best guess. The places listed in our gambeson video description will do full tailored customs ones for you
What type of gambeson is the one specifically in the middle. I want to get the same one from gambeson pl. I want to tank. The standard ones i've been looking at are too thin.
I have just recently gotten interest in medieval armored combat. Can anyone tell me which gambeson material and batting would be ideal for hot weather? and how many layers would provide good defense?
Honestly with hot weather. All I can suggest is drinking lots of water. No matter what you wear, its going to be hot. But I personally would do at least two layers
Anyone have recommendations on the best place to get medieval clothing (1150-1335AD) for men (English), women (Iberian) and children that also doesn't look out of place in the modern world? I was thinking that footwear like the following could suit (whilst not necessarily being perfect) Men: Sandals, Espadrilles, Ropes Sandals, Empire Sandals, Leather Thongs, Menorcan Sandals, Gladiator Sandals, Clogs, Monk Strap, Moccasins, Woven Sandals, Suede Loafer, Chukka Boots, Chelsea boots, Plimsolls, Cuban Heel Chelsea Boots, Chukka Desert Boot, Driving Shoes, Women: Strappy Tie-up Sandals, Knotted Suede Toe Post Sandal, Cross Strap flat sandals, Raffia double strap slide sandals, woven leather tie leg sandal, Mules, Clogs, Over the Knee Boots, Ballet Flats, Lace Up Knee High Boots, Stirrup Boots, Slouch Boot, Desert Lace Up Shoes, Cuban heel western Chelsea boot with buckle detail. Likewise, Quilted Clothing (like Quilted Sweatshirt, Quilted Puffer Coat, Quilted Coat, Quilted Tracksuit Pants, Quilted Tracksuit Top, Quilted Jumper) could suffice for Civilian Gambeson. I’m also thinking that Tunics (Knee, Cocktail, Midi or Maxi Length), Leggings, Tights, Long Sleeved V Neck Shirt, Tank Top, Henley Shirt, Track Pants, Hoodie, T-Shirt with Notch Neck, Driving Gloves, Suede Gloves, Leather Gloves could be used. Correct me if I’m wrong.
for reference, it's an old customer's trick to just spray straight vodka on clothes to get rid of any smell so I'll hazard a guess and say no. the important bit is killing the bacteria, the smell is a bonus.
Saying that fibres such as polyester do not wick moisture away is somewhat inaccurate. Most outdoor 'technical' clothing is made from fabrics containing polyester or polypropylene (micro) fibres.
A 140 pound longbow would put you on your arse even if it didn’t kill you. And as the french discovered; a pavise is the way to deal with arrows, not armour.

Muito obrigado! Voce pode usar cachaça tambem :)
I bet colloidal silver could be added to that spray solution, and help kill bacteria.
Underated vid

Thank you guys for these videos!!!
This video is great, I love the information!
so for hot weather,
you recommend linen interior and exterior and bamboo padding for the best breathability?
You guys are great, loving the content :)
Great tips!
What is the recipe for that spray solution to clean your gambeson?

It depends on the materials, but generally hand washing and line drying the old-fashioned way is the way to go.
My gambison has linnen wool linen
It is spelled "Gambeson" and "Linen"
There's a link for everything else, where do you get the bamboo batting?
If i change to a slightly thinner gambeson, 1 layer less, will my cuirass and entire kit no longer fit properly?
Nomex and aramid outer with kevlar and bamboo inner padding. Best possible.
Does anybody know how much it would cost to have one made like this and where it could be done?
And then how much a full set with the pants and hat would be

I bought my gambison at age of craft made in Russia
Have you had any issues with the spiced rum concoction staining the gambeson?
There are clear rums. Other ones can stain light colored gambeson
Would you have a general sowing pattern for the gambeson? the middle one seems to have been made in pannels, would that be accurate?
Hello guy first Thanks for wath you doing. I got a Question were and from were you head the Colewests? Thanks for your time

Hi, i have a question about the rhum spray, does it attract any kind of insect because of the sugar that is contained in the alcool ?
No it does not. It just keeps things clean.
Would the buhurt tech squire gambeson be a good option?
Yes, Buhurt tech makes good stuff
Hey you guys just got suggestions for leather weight for point ties?
Me- Roman Tunic, Maybe two.

A little late to the show, but Conditioning is key.
What’s the middle gambeson made out of?

Medieval clothing that can be used normally in modern world?...not exactly sure
With the spray do you need to use those specific essential oils
for reference, it's an old customer's trick to just spray straight vodka on clothes to get rid of any smell so I'll hazard a guess and say no. the important bit is killing the bacteria, the smell is a bonus.
Frankincense has actual benefits, might be antimicrobial.
02 is cool asf
thx

PLZ RESPOND TO ME IM 14 !! So I’m a chest size 32 and all and it’s so hard to right the right stuff like dang 😂
The major problem I see here is at age 14, you’re not going to be fighting in a list for another 4 years, unless it’s perhaps in soft gear.
The guy in the silly sunglasses isn't giving historically accurate information a out gambesons. And wearing really dark sunglasses indoors?
He has a light sensitivity.
Bro I can just hear the *snort* "well achuaalllyy" out of this comment
