  • In table tennis, there are many difficult moments, even for the top players like Ma Long.
Recently, one of the toughest moments for Ma Long is the semi-final match of the Tokyo Olympics 2020 versus Dimitrij Ovtcharov. He has narrowly defeated Dima. Just 1 point gap 68-69.

No one can be perfect even you are the best, this is not only the game of skill, stamina but also the war of mental and pressure. Ma Long has proved he could win himself when he faced pressure to overcome toughest moments through years. He lost against FZD, LYJ, Boll, Harimoto but immediately comeback stronger and won them. He kept every opponent in his control and that keeps him stay on the top for almost 20 years. That's why he is legend of legends, now he's 32 and the history of his adventure keep writing. . .

The best player in the World often have other gears and tactics. Best of all, Ma Long can adjust and he had the best technical coach in the planet in Liu Guoliang. He has been there before, knew the situation inside out. He was a World Champion, Olympic Champion and so on. In this match, he knew how to encourage and guide the "Dragon" back to his top form. All the early momentum by Jeoung was gone, everyone can see he was getting nervous, second guessing and making all those unforced errors.
This is a great experience for all table tennis players to adjust and find another ways to win. Also to calm yourself to focus to attack on the weak side of your opponents. All those little margins you gain will be the difference between winning and losing.

Poor Jeoung this would have been one of the biggest upset of table tennis history. I bet Ma Long have never felt such pressure before. Super tense match with superb play not to mention the atmosphere which is a cherry on the cake. Too bad the olympic channel doesn't release high-quality footage even years after the event.

That was one of the great matches. Mr. Jeoung played well in the first two games but he was the blocker, not initiating attacks and Mr. Ma was not as consistent as he should be. Blockers cannot win games or matches consistently. After that, Mr. Ma returned to his unbeatable mode. Then getting a game from Ma Long would be considered an accomplishment.

Didn’t people speculate that during this Olympics that China was so confident that they were prepared to let the opponent win the open game just to study their play?

no, the chief coach Liu guoliang had a interview prior to Olympic, he predicted the first game would be the riskiest one. The team game would be most secured.

Noticed that too. Wet backhand rubber but we don't know if he would still win the point. And even if he wins it can he go on and win the set?
