I'm a Riley before marriage so must have been 😂 My grandparents also loved going to Ireland. Something I've still not had the pleasure of after 16 years of marriage to my amazing patient husband . For those unfamiliar with the "Holy Ground", you might not realize that this song is not about a poor love-sick sailor bidding farewell to his true love, and the holy ground is not precisely Ireland. In the old sailing ship days there was a southern seaport in Ireland name Queenstown (now renamed Cobh, County Cork). In Queenstown was a notorious red-light district called...you guessed it, "The Holy Ground". It is to that famous old entity and the soiled doves abiding therein to which the song refers. Now that's a sailor song.
