Getting a gym body ain’t a bad thing but yeah it doesn’t stop your depression, it’s a slow process of rewiring your brain. Even when I had a gym body, it didn’t stop my suicidal ideation. There’s no silver bullets to stopping depression, it’s all about the individual.

I was the same as Ethan. I literally had to hit rock bottom before I worked up the courage to take my therapists advice and go on antidepressants. My insecurity about pills somehow making me weak almost killed me. I hate that Sebastian is out here spreading that dangerous message to young people. It’s ok to ask for help. It’s not weak to do so, in fact, it often takes a lot of courage.

I’m so MAD about people with his ideas because I also agonized about getting treated and it turned out that I am Bipolar. I take a single pill each day, sometimes have to add a second one if I start going manic and I am totally normal now. No weight gain or side effects anyway (except super vivid dreams) I’ll never be able to go off them and it doesn’t make me weak. It actually makes me stronger bc now I have to work to consistently do things instead of write an entire draft of a novel in a week and then clean my whole house but then be utterly useless for six months of the year. The meds make me functional and from there I can work on things… these people don’t get it

Took pills for years, I was able to solve my issues without the pills, the happiest I've ever been in my life has been without them. Don't talk about stuff you don't know loser. I did everything , tried everything for YEARS before getting officially diagnosed with depression because I did not believe I had depression. Eating healthy, taking cold showers, exercising, mindfulness, they ALL helped but that dark feeling of depression always lingered. Feeling irritable, having serious mood swings, constant fatigue never went away UNTIL I finally got diagnosed and started lexapro. SSRIs truly saved my life. Holistic intervention + clinical treatment = depression in remission. Let’s treat mental health like health. Don’t tell me you’re not going to take antibiotics if you have pneumonia
Great point! And sometimes it has nothing to do with your external circumstances, sometimes it’s an internal imbalance of neurotransmitters, in those cases you need anti depressants to treat that.

As a person who has trauma induced major depressive disorder and CPTSD it is really disheartening to hear that all I have to do is, 'work my way through it.' What it feels to me, and maybe it's transference, is that again I am not good enough and it's all my fault that I'm trapped in depression. Reminds me of all the @busive people in my life telling me it's all my fault and dumping all the guilt back on me.
💯 I have the same diagnosis from cptsd as well as bipolar disorder type 2- there’s is no way that ANY of his suggestions would fix my manic depressive episodes without medication. Just remember this dude is the furthest thing from a doctor, and actually gives the exact opposite advice of what a medical professional would to someone who is struggling with depressive disorders. Don’t listen to anything he says, he’s a narcissist and he has a personality disorder and that’s far worse than ever having depression.
Yep I feel the same way. And it sucks because we KNOW it’s ignorant to have this “opinion” about it, but so many people do and it’s the way they treat those of us who struggle with it, being exposed to people like this makes it 10x worse and sets you back with any improvement you could’ve made. A lot of people who think “it’s just an opinion” don’t experience these ignoramuses acting on these opinions in their daily lives AS IF they ARE fact. Especially a commonly held stigma or misconception where you are treated a certain type of way many times by different people. For example, I take a medication for chronic pain that is most commonly used by addicts to stay clean , I’ve never done drugs, I don’t drink, but every interaction I have with my pharmacy trying to get my medication filled is a hassle and even pharmacists have no sympathy or at worst are judgmental and rude, some have even purposely sabotaged my medication, and/or are completely rude because they falsely assume I’m an addict. Which even if I was, nobody should be treated less than because of that. It’s still a medical need prescribed by a medical professional! This stigma and attitude towards a person is completely erased (by most people) for an asthmatic person who needs their inhaler, diabetic that needs insulin, etc. These kinds of stigmas don’t just stop at an ignorant and arrogant 20 something year old kid, professionals who have degrees in their field still hold misconceptions about things like this! Or even the whole thing about anti-depressants and being weak. Spreading false “opinions” as fact is so harmful and I love how Ethan points that out. Actually I remember in school learning that the DIFFERENCE between an opinion and a fact is that you can’t disprove an opinion. So people need to stop calling their false beliefs that are constantly disproven as “OPINIONS THAT EVERYONE’S ENTITLED TO HAVE”. Such bs.

Sebastian walked back most of his points as soon as Ethan pushed them even a bit, which makes me think that Sebastian actually has enough respect for Ethan to think seriously about what he's saying. I have some hope that Sebastian walked away from this conversation thinking a little more deeply about his own views. Even if he's defensive now, Ethan's challenges are going to stew in the back of his mind for a while. Maybe something productive will come out of it for him. And Ethan is always good about giving people room to explain themselves, even if they're crazy or offensive on the surface, he wants to know just HOW crazy or offensive it is before he comes down on it.

Getting a gym body ain’t a bad thing but yeah it doesn’t stop your depression, it’s a slow process of rewiring your brain. Even when I had a gym body, it didn’t stop my suicidal ideation. There’s no silver bullets to stopping depression, it’s all about the individual.

I was the same as Ethan. I literally had to hit rock bottom before I worked up the courage to take my therapists advice and go on antidepressants.

I take a single pill each day, sometimes have to add a second one if I start going manic and I am totally normal now. No weight gain or side effects anyway (except super vivid dreams)

It actually makes me stronger bc now I have to work to consistently do things instead of write an entire draft of a novel in a week and then clean my whole house but then be utterly useless for six months of the year. The meds make me functional and from there I can work on things… these people don’t get it

I did everything , tried everything for YEARS before getting officially diagnosed with depression because I did not believe I had depression. Eating healthy, taking cold showers, exercising, mindfulness, they ALL helped but that dark feeling of depression always lingered. Feeling irritable, having serious mood swings, constant fatigue never went away UNTIL I finally got diagnosed and started lexapro. SSRIs truly saved my life. Holistic intervention + clinical treatment = depression in remission. Let’s treat mental health like health. Don’t tell me you’re not going to take antibiotics if you have pneumonia

As a person who has trauma induced major depressive disorder and CPTSD it is really disheartening to hear that all I have to do is, 'work my way through it.'
What it feels to me, and maybe it's transference, is that again I am not good enough and it's all my fault that I'm trapped in depression. Reminds me of all the @busive people in my life telling me it's all my fault and dumping all the guilt back on me.
💯 I have the same diagnosis from cptsd as well as bipolar disorder type 2- there’s is no way that ANY of his suggestions would fix my manic depressive episodes without medication. Just remember this dude is the furthest thing from a doctor, and actually gives the exact opposite advice of what a medical professional would to someone who is struggling with depressive disorders. Don’t listen to anything he says, he’s a narcissist and he has a personality disorder and that’s far worse than ever having depression.

Yep I feel the same way. And it sucks because we KNOW it’s ignorant to have this “opinion” about it, but so many people do and it’s the way they treat those of us who struggle with it, being exposed to people like this makes it 10x worse and sets you back with any improvement you could’ve made.
A lot of people who think “it’s just an opinion” don’t experience these ignoramuses acting on these opinions in their daily lives AS IF they ARE fact. Especially a commonly held stigma or misconception where you are treated a certain type of way many times by different people. For example, I take a medication for chronic pain that is most commonly used by addicts to stay clean , I’ve never done drugs, I don’t drink, but every interaction I have with my pharmacy trying to get my medication filled is a hassle and even pharmacists have no sympathy or at worst are judgmental and rude, some have even purposely sabotaged my medication, and/or are completely rude because they falsely assume I’m an addict. Which even if I was, nobody should be treated less than because of that. It’s still a medical need prescribed by a medical professional! This stigma and attitude towards a person is completely erased (by most people) for an asthmatic person who needs their inhaler, diabetic that needs insulin, etc. These kinds of stigmas don’t just stop at an ignorant and arrogant 20 something year old kid, professionals who have degrees in their field still hold misconceptions about things like this! Or even the whole thing about anti-depressants and being weak. Spreading false “opinions” as fact is so harmful and I love how Ethan points that out.
Actually I remember in school learning that the DIFFERENCE between an opinion and a fact is that you can’t disprove an opinion. So people need to stop calling their false beliefs that are constantly disproven as “OPINIONS THAT EVERYONE’S ENTITLED TO HAVE”. Such bs.

Even if he's defensive now, Ethan's challenges are going to stew in the back of his mind for a while. Maybe something productive will come out of it for him. And Ethan is always good about giving people room to explain themselves, even if they're crazy or offensive on the surface, he wants to know just HOW crazy or offensive it is before he comes down on it.
