I was taught the basics at the tactical level were to "move, shoot, and communicate." And being able to see, regardless of the conditions, and without creating a signature, that capability enables 2/3 of the tactical basics: "moving" and "shooting." The most professional military forces are able to do their jobs in the dark, and that's impossible without night vision devices.
Thermal Night Vision one of the most crucial capabilities for Ukrainian forces to obtain. Definitely a worthwhile initiative.
It's up there with drones. Brain over brawn.
Russians seem to have had a massive advantage in night capabilities at the start of the war but it seems the vast majority of their special recon (spetsnaz) have been wiped out.

Top end night vision equipment is expensive. The gen 3 NVGs that I used as a infantry soldier cost over $5000. It was amazing technology though very limited in many ways. The biggest being no peripheral vision. Second was the difficulty in assuming the correct firing posture. It takes a lot of training to become effective.
The use of para flares, in a close fought engagement was still essential in gaining fire superiority.
Though night vision improves defence and movement to attack.

I am now 63 years old now and have been fortunate to travel the World. I learned so much about about myself and my culture by seeing other countries. We are all more alike then different. At age 17, I flew my bike from Southern California to Germany and toured Germany,East Germany,and Austria. I was given permission to cross the Berlin Wall and I couldn’t believe what the Soviets had done and treated the wonderful East Germans. I saw absolutely no joy and plenty of long bread lines and Post WW2 unrestored buildings.I have since traveled to and across Russia and China when they opened up to Western Travelers.The people where wonderful but very afraid to tell their truth because of the harsh and punitive Government.

I am writing from Australia - someone I once knew is in Ukraine as a volunteer combat medic and after a year of being engaged with front line Ukrainian Army he has also started delivering thermal and night vision scopes... He has delivered countless generators, tourniquets, and much more requested gear... He delivers what the troops need. Yes they need the gear to save lives in the case of 300's(wounded) but the troops at Zero need the tools to defend and what they need are these scopes. Their advantage cannot be over exaggerated. By adding thermal and night vision you not only expand your abilitiy to interdict logistics, infiltrate and ambush, you also add a large psychological and morale advantage.

The training definitely shows in military men. The aggression needed to move forward under fire rather than retreat. I know it happens, but the training makes a soldier move forward even when in fear. That is ' brave '

I believe I'm still correct in saying that every infantry battle by the British Army since the advent of night vision goggles had been fought - and won - at night.
Those things are genuine game-changers.
Yeah the US has been big on owning the night for years too. Lots of night training and even clothing markers on the uniforms that are only visible through thermal vision.

Good to mention that the Javelin sight (CLU) is an amazing observation device by itself. Many units even SF would carry them on night patrols, using the same tactics being described here in the video.

We had some night vision in the early 1980's ,with New Zealand army ,the one mounted to the SLR was huge.I was lead scout in Malaya and it took almost all night to lead the company 2km to the assault point using night vision as I was the only one with it.

Wow that current gen phosper night vision is surprisingly good.

The way to mitigate this is to use strobe lights as soon as you're knowing you're being engaged in the dark by an enemy using night vision You turn on strobe lights and blind them as you're neutralize them coming at you because they'll have to strip the gear off meaning they won't be able to properly operate their weapon. The other thing you can do is put claymore minds and make it a valley of death😅 just saying you're not bulletproof just cuz you can see in the dark lol😅
Better yet you do this with motion detection devices. 😅
You can also mitigate thermal devices. However this is a long reply already so...

It's not just about the night vision and thermal,you also need good optics like Eotechs and not to mention that NV devices without the IR illuminator in pitch black they're pretty useless 😉

Great video, Artur. One point that was missed was the need for IR strobes mounted on friendlies so no mis-identification during night ops.
this only applies if the enemy you are facing doesn’t have the ability to also see those IR strobes. If your enemy does have NVG/IR this would be a giant beacon that you are coming..even the small square IR reflector patches the we used in the US in Iraq and afghan would give your position away.
