I’m surprised Barbara Stewart didn’t get any credit recognition. She was a pretty recognizable face at the time as she was in various programs, most notably playing Sgt. Carter’s girlfriend on Gomer Pyle.
Mr. Stevenson does have good delivery of his occasional funny lines. Bill Idelson, who wrote this episode, played Sally's bf Herman Glimscher on DVD SHOW.
This show actually had some funny moments, particularly between Stevenson and his mother in law. I remember laughing a lot at it when it was on. That said, Stevenson just wasn't strong enough to carry the show.
This show had to be one of the cheapest sitcoms of all time. I don't think it ever had a scene outside of the cardboard living room and a kitchen set which looked like it was built for a high school production.
If McLean Stevenson had been given a sitcom about Henry's Blake's life after Korea (instead of killing of the character) it probably would have been a lot like this Except they would have to have set in the 50's or early 60's (to account for older children)
The Darryl #1 guy had a career that was blossoming and leading him to fame and notoriety in a few more years. Whereas McLean Stevenson's career was sliding in to the crapper. Splot!
Thanks for posting..I did like the theme song (because of Paul Williams)...I remember at the time thinking that the "mother" character was a lame ripoff of Mother Dexter on Phyllis. This show was terrible.
cornerofthemoon He made a big mistake leaving mash and he new it , trying to become a star in his own right was his downfall ... shame as he was a great actor
A few episodes in and they were already starting to retool the show (different intro sequence). Not that it was that great of a show but it never had much of a prayer as NBC kept preempting its time slot with specials and it was competing directly against Bionic Woman and All in the Family.
McLean didn't like being 2nd banana to anyone he always wanted to be the lead of the show he did, he had a great role in The Doris Day Show which he quit which caused the series to be retooled. Of course MASH after that and he had a string of flop shows where he tried to be the lead. I always felt sorry for him was never happy.
NBC peppered him with illusions that he would eventually replace Johnny Carson. Meanwhile, Carson had absolutely no intention of leaving the Tonight Show back then.

5:05 The "toilet talk" line was quoted in TV Guide's negative review of this series in its Mar. 26, 1977 issue.
Mac was jus funny being himself. Thanx 4 the post!
"Hello Mac" - Written and Performed by Paul Williams

Badly written

A good supporting actor , but not a lead
0:48- "I left MASH for this."

@@stephenholmes1036 Huh?
1:30 The guy here was the other brother "Daryl' in Newhart.
...and he's playing "Larry" here. Mac could've foreshadowed his next NBC sitcom by saying hi to him.

Yep!
Oh, wow!

Hey. That guy sitting at the table in the first scene is the other brother Darryl from Newhart.

Yep!
No cast names in the opening credits?
They were too ashamed to put their names on it.
@@tj.espygil4544 Hahaha!
Larry went on to become one of the Darryls on the NEWHART show .

Did McLean say Hello Larry to the kid at the table?
Hey! His plane wasnt shot down!!!!
Any Mac did was worth watching.
I love you where did you find this? I love McLean Stevenson
So you're the one who loves him!
Thanks, that sounds right. Since you did such a great job, do you know the end of line one? thanks.
I guess running a Home is not as easy as Running the 4077th MASH. Right Henry? Lol
Yeah, and this time he doesn't have Radar to do the work for him.
A very good supporting actor not a lead actor.
He was badly let down with a very weak script.
Perhaps if the sets were more imaginative the show could have lasted more than one season.
I thought the same, the sets are horrendous
@@andrewk2996 You can literally see the walls shake when someone enters the room.

McLean pretty much played Henry Blake (the frustrated inept authority figure) in every role. He should have just stayed on MASH.

He made a big mistake leaving mash and he new it , trying to become a star in his own right was his downfall ... shame as he was a great actor
He would have had to be intelligent to do that.
MASH was still on the air while all the shows that he was on failed.

@richardnixonisgod I felt bad too,but McLean did leave M*A*S*H on his own accord to pursue a solo career that never quite panned out,as you well know.
That's because a person would have to have an element of talent to successfully star in and carry a show.

He was great in mash. It’s kind of the same character in a. Cheesy show. Better than the condo pilot.
Tell em to go...finish this line lol
@richardnixonisgod McLean actually chose to leave MASH. He thought his star was rising and that he could do better. The same with Trapper John.
bad idea leaving mash, mac......a lame family sit com.....did this last a whole season?
he had to try tho didnt he.
C'mon. A show about a son's friend in the kitchen? This is utter, utter crap. This must have aired for the vodka and valium crowd back in the 1970s.
what the????
McLean Stevenson was great actor on M*A*S*H. I feel bad that he completely blew his career on this crap.
A good supporting actor, Not a lead
God, that opening theme song is terrible!
It was sung & written by the man who not long after was nominated for an Oscar for co-writing "The Rainbow Connection".
This is worse than "Hello, Larry".
