    Eric Stoltz has said that the script he was working from wasn't as much of a comedy as the film that came out with Michael J. Fox was. I tend to believe Stoltz in this. One of the running gags in the Fox version is that he is wearing a down vest, that everyone in the 1950s keeps calling a "life jacket." _None_ of the scenes with Stoltz have him wearing such a down vest, so *that* joke was obviously not in the earlier version of the film.

      I never realized this but that makes so much sense. This makes me want to see Eric Stoltz version even more for just the difference in comedy or levity

    • @BareBandSubscription
      @BareBandSubscription 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +15

      That’s a really good point. It may have been a bit of both. The script wasn’t quite as comedic, but he honed in too much on the darker (and valid) implications of the story and made his performance more self-serious or in crisis or what have you.

    • @75aces97
      @75aces97 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

      There was a novelization of the movie when it came out that went more into a backstory about atomic power, and was less comedic than the film. I’ve wondered in years since whether the book was based on a previous draft of the script.

      I've read most of the older scripts for the movie (even the ones prior to casting anyone in any role), and they are still primarily comedy. Also, Stoltz's gimmick was that he wore green shoes rather than a down vest, and the comments made to him in 1955 were in regards to his shoes.

    Given 'Back to the Future' is my second favorite movie of all time tied with and just behind 'A Nightmare on Elm Street' and that I love Eric Stoltz in 'Some Kind of Wonderful' and 'Mask', I really want to see the footage of his version to see what appeals to me. Just because it's him and Doc exactly as HE is in the finished product are ALREADY things I LIKE, but I might like the different vibe and the interactions between him and the rest of the characters because that happens with me and sequels. Knowing what I already know of it and what bits I've seen, I'm INTERESTED in seeing the rest of it, and THAT'S a good thing for it!

    No good reason not to release it, it's not like they recorded a crime or top secret info. As far as not being a full movie, if the tech gets them there, CG / A.I. finish it, this isn't gonna be a new commercial release anyways, just a passion project to show what different DNA would affect a well known product.

    It's no surprise that, since he was one of the only original cast members of the film to reprise his role, Thom Wilson would have a career as a voice over artist. Marty meaning "gay" as a "homosexual", and Doc thinking it as "carefree" or "joyful" (a more popular definition in the 50's), that's why he responds "Why shouldn't you be happy?". But, on hindsight, it was for the better that it got cut. Having your main character saying "being gay" as a bad thing isn't a good look.

    As much as I like Eric Stoltz and believe he did the best he could, I dont think this series wouldve done so well without the comedic timing we have now. Hugely dramatic movies need tight realism to maintain the serious tone. But a time travel movie in nature is hard to suspend disbelief in. Had they stayed with Eric, he wouldve done fine and movie wouldve been ok. But the comedic nature helps us pull back from an overly serious tone to take the movie entirely serious and we let cheesy or unrealistic elements slide a little. We all know that some of cheesiest or ridiculous movies we all love get saved by this edge of comedy that cuts through it all. Back to the Future needed this to become as iconic as it is today.

    I know this is not a popular opinion among Future fans, but even as a big fan of the movies - I much prefer the Simpson's ride. I rode the Back To The Future ride numerous times and while the movie portion was ok, the ride vehicles were crap. They were shaky, rattly, and you could see all the other cars around you. The Simpson's ride was a huge improvement in tech. 😎

I just remember Michael Bien talking about how he was a late add and how he had to wear the armour the other guy decorated. There's also one shot of the other guy in the movie. A shot where they are walking into the hive in the processing station. The first X-men also swapped out Dougray Scott for Hugh Jackman. I don't think filming had started thought.

      A Nightmare On Elm Street part 2. Random stuntman in a mask as Freddy. Over half of the movie was shot before they realized they needed Robert Englund back. Roughly 2 seconds remain in the movie of the unnamed stuntman, most likely due to the practical effect, which is pretty cool.

    In regards to the BttF-ride at Universal Studios! It blows my mind, that they ever tore that down! The movies are as popular as ever, and it doesn’t get more classic than BttF :-( I really dig The Simpsons ride, but not enough to have it replace BttF! One is just way above the other, and BttF should’ve ramained (so very little classic stuff left there to begin with)
    Thanks for this video, greatly enjoyed it! :-)

    Eric played way too serious, he lacking light-hearted charisma of MJ Fox and other actors, every scene with him feels like dramatic character got sucked into comedy and don't know how to be funny. It's almost how Tommy Wauseao in Room tried to be serious, but this time it's opposite.

      You’ve seen like 20 seconds of silent footage. You can’t judge a performance off that. At best, he looks more overwhelmed and in crisis. The reason why people want to see more of this footage is because they’re curious about his performance, meaning we don’t actually know how well or how badly he did.

      Using “gay” in a context where it seems like an objectively bad thing to be gay is legit homophobic. Does that mean they were coming from a place of hatred? Not necessarily, of course. But there’s a difference between saying something that’s inherently offensive vs “not taking part”. Also, referring to the LGBT as an exaggerated string of letters followed by calling them “those people” is not a great look, my dude. I’m not accusing you of anything, but it’s a bit of a red flag.

I remember sitting there after the credits and the lights came back on just being disappointed and confused since the first 2 were so good.
