Mascot Mine | Hedley BC | Part 1

  • Welcome to part one of our Mini Series!!!
Described as a daily game of snakes and ladders, a maze of stairs, skips and catwalks would take these mine workers to and from the mine offices, cookhouse, bunkhouse, blacksmith shop, the tram station and most importantly to the mine! Mascot grew to be one of the most stunning and unique operations in the world, perched 5,000 ft above the town, built directly on the side of the mountain.
Once in operation shifts ran around the clock, with 130 men claiming the Mascot as their home. The married men with families, would ride the empty ore skip on the tramline down the mountainside to 20 mile creek and follow a footpath into town Hedley.
We explore some of the 4800 level, the Mascot’s main portal. It’s called the 4800 level because it’s 4800 feet about sea level and stretches almost 1 km into Nickel Plate Mountain. The Mascot had 2 other main levels, the 4300 level, driven in 1948 and the 3700 level, driven in 1944. Many sub levels lie between the main levels, connected by manways, raises and inclines.
Duncan Woods, described as a down and out prospector, arrived to Nickel Plate Mountain to find out that he was once again late for the party as the ground in the area had already been staked up. Not the kind to easily give up, looking at maps he noticed a small 40 or so acre sliver of ground that hadn’t been claimed. Calling it the Mascot, the terrain was very steep and the work was hard, but Duncan kept looking for his gold. In 1904, the Daly Reduction Company, which owned the claims surrounding Woods’ and operated the Nickel Plate Mine, discovered that their main ore body angled into Duncan’s claim and the superintendent Jones, approached him to purchase it. No one knows what was said, but Duncan refused to ever sell if Jones was involved. Refusing to sell to his rivals, in 1933 Duncan sold the Mascot to a group of investors from Vancouver and they started the Hedley Mascot Gold Mine. The tramway was constructed, and was 4700 feet in length, ran at an angle of about 40 degrees and was one of the largest in the world. The majority of production took place between 1936 and 1949 producing over 7 tones of gold valuing an astonishing $47,000 000
In the 1990’s, the British Columbia Ministry of Mines deemed it a safety risk and planned to burn the site down. Fortunately this did not happen and steps were taken to preserve the site as a Provincial Heritage resource. The buildings were stabilized and rebuilt over an 8 year period and in 2004, opened for guided tours ran by the Upper Similkameen Tribe. The tours ran from 2004-2017 and The Mascot sits once again abandoned, a fading piece of history, a relic in the clouds.
“One thing about the stamp mill, was the tremendous noise it made 24/7. It is said that in 1955 when the last stamp was lifted, the town went a little vertigo without the constant noise and babies had a hard time sleeping without the crushing lull of the noise.”
