    Hi Philip.... Wow, just when I thought I was the only one going through all these emotions I stumble across this video. You will never know how much this has helped me. I have been recently laid off and advanced in years like yourself and this has given me back my self belief. Thank you

      John, you aren't alone - and I feel your pain. I've been laid off 3 times in my career - once in a reorganization of a company I'd been with 11 years. It never gets easier, but no matter what, you can bounce back - the direction may be slightly different than what it was, but our careers are meant to evolve over time - you just have to keep learning, growing and being open to change. - also if you need creative professional career coaching (if you are in that category/field) I do that sort of one-on-one work - you can book appointments on my website in the description. Hope to see you back in the comments either way. You can do it John!

    I too struggle with artist side of me and the side who is an employee. It often feels like the employers just need to get the work done from you without caring (which they don't have to either) the artistic aspect of a design. You are not satisfied but you are getting paid which is important to survive. Its encouraging to watch your videos sir. Gives me the motivation I need when I am doubting myself with the future of my career.

    Philip, I feel like this channel (and this video specifically) is a gem in an ocean of garbage on YT. For someone younger like me to be able to hear the perspective of someone with a lifetime of experience and be walked through their career is priceless. The younger generation needs to have more of these conversations with people who have been through it. Thank you for sharing! Me subscribing and liking your channel and videos still isn't a sufficient enough thank you.

      Michael, Thank you for taking the time to write such a supportive and kind comment. I am so happy that you are enjoying the videos I am sharing - and have not be entirely swallowed up by the cult of youth/drek on YT...lol.. As I mentioned, this one was a bit different for me. Much more personal - and to be honest a little scary as far as being authentic and sharing some deeper stuff and personal POVs. Your comment is a really nice way to end a very busy week at my agency - I hope you are having an awesome creative journey yourself - and I hope to see you back around in the comments.

    Love your video and in my case let me tell you my story. I have 31 years old and I have a degree in Biological Sciences. Since I was a kid I always love nature and drawing. Unfortunately in my country being a scientist and live from research is quite impossible because the lasts goverments here made epic mistakes. I got my degree on 2014 and I worked for free for 3 years trying to get a schollarship for my PHD. I never get it so I couldnt start my PHD , that means no economical support for me (you can make the PHD for free, but come on ... 5 years working for free? no sir) So at the beginning of this year I started a BIG crisis in my life, I had 30 years old, no job, no money and the career that took me 8 years of my life was a total dead end... I was in my darkest hour, I cried a lot, I get depressed and I didnt know what to do with my life. Thankfully my mom asked me "why dont you start some carrer related to drawing?, you love drawing". So after a lot of tears I started a digital illustration classes on April and now on August I gonna start the Graphic Designer career. Also in this meantime being an unemployed I was contacted by Teepublic to join as a designer for their products and gaining some money with that. So yes, life has very dark and bright moments, but the key is to keep fighting and take those dark moments as weapons for change. Fear is but the precursor to valor. Thanks again for the videos, really encouraging.

      Thanks so much for sharing your story. It very inspiring! Is that quote yours?: "Fear is but the precursor to valor."? or is it said by someone else you are quoting? It's amazing - and I want to put it in my brand•muse newsletter - let me know - and keep chasing your dreams.

      Thank you so much for the answer ♥. The quote is not mine (but I say it to myself when Im in some crisis lol) I took it from the last episode of "Trollhunters", a tv show made by Dreamsworks, is on Netflix right now. The quote says like this " Destiny is a gift. Never forget that fear is but the precursor to valor. That to strive and triumph in the face of fear is what it means to be a hero. Dont think, become"

    Thank you! I really needed to hear your story today. I’ve been a designer since PS1 and learnt the craft at the knees of established art and creative directors, more of an apprenticeship than going to art school (and some AD’s/CD’s were fabulous - some not so). When I had my kids I no longer felt that I fitted into the agency life, although I loved it, the dirty looks for leaving at my contractual hours took their toll and I left advertising. Now, I find myself intrigued and interested in Content creation - a few years back I had no interest at all in anything to do with the web.
    Your words and journey have given me hope, direction and inspiration. Thank you!!
    Career 5.0 underway 😊

      @PhilipVanDusen  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Love it- Career 5.0 - I'm in the same boat. The lifestyle choices you made sound like they were the right ones for you. Advertising in particular is brutal in the work/life balance department. Certainly- as you learned - NOT family friendly. Content Creation has changed my life - like, totally. Thought leadership is a lot fo work - don't be fooled - but the payoff if huge if you stick with it.

I left the corporate world a few years ago and have been working independently since then, but now I'm headed back and I am struggling with feelings of failure even though I've been pretty successful (I just need a change, that success has come at a cost). In truth I know I will end up making more money and having more free time to focus on my passions without the pressure of having to "make a living". I'm trying to embrace this new direction and am focussing on the positive aspects of this change. I'm encouraged by your story. I am still young (early 30's) and could always go independent again after a few years once some of my self-driven projects gain traction. Thank you for sharing.

You're right you can ALWAYS go back to being independent. Philip, thank you so much for this video, it is so interesting and inspiring to me to listen to your story! I also looove your trend-videos, really great and inspiring!! I am 30 now and I get sometimes that feeling of not having figured it out yet and instead of working on becoming an 'expert' in one thing, I tend to be all over the place! I get these, almost obsessive, phases....like really getting into something for a realtively short while (between a couple of months up to a couple of years) like filmmaking, then documentary, then photography, then graphic design, then multimedia, then animation, then VJing, then yoga and meditation, then mandalas, then crafting, dream catchers, macrame, knitting, crocheting, mosaic art, social media, seo, webdesign....all of these I've visited and dipped into them with passion but for a limited amount of time, which leaves me at a place like I'm a beginner in all of them and nowhere really an 'expert'...The common thread is being creative and creating, that's it really...I actually got two bachelor degrees - one in theatre, film and media studies (Bacc.art) and one in A/V media engineering (BSc) and since then I'm struggling around with making a living...Right now I'm since a short while a mother, I work for an agency and still I just need to figure out how to do things effectively...You've mentioned things that really help to take away some pressure - especially the one of being open to change, accepting it, looking again at things that one 'hates'. Have you also ever had that feeling of 'being all over the place'? Any advice on how to turn it into a good one? Thank you again for the insight into your life, it definitley helped to make me feel more at ease not losing hope!

    • @PhilipVanDusen
      @PhilipVanDusen  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Anna,
      Thanks for sharing your story. I am actually going to be doing a video on just what you were describing: being a multi-creative. Is it a blessing or a curse? Most creative people are not only creative in a single area of their lives. But it can get extreme if your interests become too fractured and you just ping-pong form one thing to another. There is a period in life where a lot of experimentation makes sense - to find what you're passionate about - or have real talent in. But then there comes a time when you have to settle down and pick one or two to focus on intently. Personally I am also a musician and there came a time in my life where I had to make the decision that music would always be just my creative "hobby" and an additional outlet. I also had to put down my paints and get a career where I could make money - so fine art was shelved for 30 years (I am just now taking it back up) so I could focus and excel at something. Closing the door on on a few things that are only serving to fracture your attention is very painful at first, but in the long run you will have greater success because of it. Good luck with your decisions and with your creative journey!

    • @annahernandez3516
      @annahernandez3516 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's great! Really looking forward to your video on multi-creatives! It feels to me that one important aspect is also to look closely what is needed most at the time and place you find yourself in, rather than only your passion. Because one might be really passionate about i.e. mosaic art but then have also a passion about webdesign and it seems as if one might be a little more in demand :). But then of course there's also the aspect of competition one needs to consider. It's all not so easy :). I find it most rewarding when I feel that my service has really made the other person happy, then I almost don't care what I did :D.

    Hello Philip , just noticed, that my life path looks similar to yours 😀😀😀. I’ve started as an digital artist, then shifted to graphic design, then I’ve been managing one big brand, due to circumstances I had to start my life from the beginning, and I’ve decided to be a freelance brand and visual designer, almost 8 years I’ve been working in this direction, and few weeks ago I’ve decided to start a T-shirt company 😀😀

    • @PhilipVanDusen
      @PhilipVanDusen  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mikhail, yes, it sounds like we have a lot in common with our journeys. Apparel is a very hard industry - don't be fooled - very low margins and you have to do a ton of volume to make any money. So do your business plan homework and run the numbers. That is advice from someone who has been there - as a solo T-shirt biz owner as well as someone with 15 years in the fashion industry running a $700M year Graphic T-shirt division. But - all that said - not to be a downer, it's not impossible - you just gotta do your homework and go in with a realistic understanding of the business and $ side of the category.

    Hi from New Zealand Philip! This is a great video and a refreshing look at how you've got where you are. I didn't discover Graphic Design until I was 26 and in the last 9 years since qualifying I've had many different changes trying to find my niche. I am now self-employed and loving it. My only concern is because I am self-employed I worry about being left behind on updating my skills and technology as it is so hard keep up with all the technological advancements, let alone staying current with design trends! Suggestions on how to stay current in a fast moving world would be a great video!

    • @PhilipVanDusen
      @PhilipVanDusen  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Steph, That IS a great idea for a video. my suggestion to you - Join a mastermind. Solo employment is VERY isolating. It was a huge adjustment for me. Masterminds have changed my life and massively sped up my learning and keeping up to date on tech and trends. I've done a video masterminds - check it out: th-cam.com/video/aXKx7k7Ur4Y/w-d-xo.html If you can't find an existing one in your physical area - start your own - do a Zoom video chat mastermind.

    Its entertaining to watch several quick bulletpoints, but as it is with food, its hard to digest and receive nutrients from something so pure. This kind of talk touched and influenced me so much more, because of emotional experience that you shared, it opened up a way to understanding their nature. Its always hardest to change yourself, to break the wall of mindset and be optimistic about whatever is coming. But when life is so short, there can only be so much excitement in it. Hope to see more of those,
    Keep up the great work.

    Hi Phil, I'm a relatively new subscriber to your channel, but I have to say that I like it a lot. This video comes at a time in my life very similar to what you tell. After 15 years in a beauty corporation, as a graphic designer and then as an art director, I was fired 4 days ago. I'm trying to deal with this, but, as you say in your video, I'm not prepared, I do not have a portfolio, in short, I'm starting from scratch, I'm 42 years old ... as you'll see I really identify with your story. What advice could you give me to start over?

    • @PhilipVanDusen
      @PhilipVanDusen  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry to hear about your lay-off. I've been laid off from 3 of my last 4 positions. 2 because of business/revenue down-turns ( the most expensive people go first..) and once because of a corporate restructuring. It sucks but you can bounce back. But it gets harder as you get older and some industries (beauty for one - fashion is another) are very age-ist. If you want some professional guidance I offer creative career coaching and personal branding advice, you can see what I offer here: philipvandusen.com/oneonone/ There is so much to cover - it is hard to answer your YT question, but start with mapping a picture of what you want to be doing first. Take a little time of real self-discovery - that will drive everything else. But certainly gathering your work in an online portfolio and setting up a website and social media presences (be choiceful - not too many platforms) are top priorities.

    • @alfredorolandogarciadiaz3776
      @alfredorolandogarciadiaz3776 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Phil, thanks for responding so fast :). It actually sucks, but I'm very optimistic, I'm taking it as an opportunity. Thanks for your offer, your advice would be ideal, but for now I could not afford it, I live in Colombia and the change of currency makes it expensive. However your words of encouragement and the small advice you gave me are very valuable, I'll start from there. Thanks again, and I'll keep watching you on your channel.
