@@OldLadyAngler It has to be the weather. Fish are reacting to it. I went out to the Lagoon yesterday....Trout were everywhere. Uploading a video in a little bit. Thank you again.
Horseshoe Lake is very pretty. When they’re schooling like that, they’re probably post spawn and ravenous, chasing any kind of bait fish they can find. I went for about four hours today, but nothing of note to report.
That was the most intense schooling I've ever seen. It lasted the entire time I was there. And ravenous is a good description of how they were acting. That lake might be great during spawn.
Hi T. Fishing a new lake for the first time is always an exploration trip. It seems like the majority of the fish favor a certain section of the lake. The "heart breaker" in your local lake, liked that area and chances are there are some good fish nearby. Once you locate some good spots, it's good to fish them often. Then there is the day when they won't bite anything. Good luck this month, Mickey
You got that right Mickey. I've experienced all of the above. haha! I really want to get back down to the lake I fished monday. Lake Baldwin. It has to have giants in it. And now that I have a better idea ... I can get right down to business once I get there.
Those crystal clear lakes are a blessing and a curse at the same time, beautiful to see but the fish see you too! Nice side pond, love the little lakes. Cool looking new net too! Got my new kayak today, unfortunately, I have no time to play with it as I'm leaving on Sunday for another 4-day fishing trip! :)
YES that is exactly how I feel about crystal clear lakes. But the fish are usually clean as well. No parasites. New kayak!!!!! Can't wait to see you fishing in it. Have fun on your next adventure!!
Hey quick tip I live right next to horseshoe lake and when you put in you can go to right right of the lake and find a dock once you pass the dock there is a hidden part of the lake I caught some decent fish out of there biggest one I hooked up with was around 6 pounds and she broke me off
Thank you! I was going to go check out that hidden section but the weather and wind kind of ran me off a little early. I did go explore that other hidden part of the lake.... at the other end of the lake. I was surprised to find that it's 8 feet deep back in there with a small island. No bites though. Do you fish horseshoe much?
I swear those little bass tear up and swallow and fling senkos way worse then those bigguns. Those bowl shaped lakes without lots of structure are hard to fish. That's when the graph really helps out
Always such beautiful markings in very clear lakes. No signs of hitch hikers or wounds from fights from the local pike gang that love grassy lakes. Very beautiful place all around Ola. I noticed some bodies of water having docks/piers nearby. Are those all private? For your first day fishing Horseshoe You learned as much as possible with rain delays etc. The water is healthy, the fish are healthy as well. Not to mention no lack of numbers of bass showing how well this place spawns out & survival rate must be high. Have to give ^5 to lake management for not spraying the banks and all the banks look to be free of any type of debris. Was any info available on navionics? Visit your local inland game & fisheries office soon for info. I'm always surprised by mine here in Virginia. They work there and receive mounds of info from visiting fishermen & most fish the same lakes/ponds as myself. They have a data base on every square in of water in Fla Ola. Data & dates on when lakes were flooded, stocked, creel and species count and they'll print it all out just for the Ola who finally got a haircut. :P I would hope & think that being Horseshoe is a state park that a tackle/bait shop may be able to provide any news from campers from the past history of this lake. I was a little disappointed not to see you go back to that fire tiger topwater once the schooling bass was located. You care to comment on your decision? I get them to fight each other to target my topwater lures just because in the past....just like a good mother will raise her children properly, I've had the parents slam my lure to show the kids just how it's done~! It's human nature.
Thank you Dave! Yes... very clean fish. Gorgeous. Most of the surrounding lakes are private. I was able to wet a line in one of them that's very close to horseshoe. It was filthy. Garbage everywhere. There was no info on Navionics. No videos on youtube. No trip reports that I could find. Oh wow... that would be great to know all that info. I'll have to check out the local office. Horseshoe Lake is just a county park / recreation area. I'm not sure why I didn't go back to topwater with the schooling. It would have been the best thing to do, but I was just caught up in the moment and they were slamming the senko so I kept going. haha. Quite honestly...... laziness! haha.
@@OldLadyAngler it's a shame private lakes with private homes are so trashy. So much for high end real estate~!! I offer my service to clean lakes like that in exchange for water rights. Hint (and you didn't hear it from me~lol) Contact your U.S.Army Corp of Engineers for elevation maps or topo maps. They get all the info sent back from satelites that deliver info for our mountain range elevations as well as the depths & ocean floor in great detail & a good chance they'll burn a quick printer size copy for free. I got the one of my Lake (Kent Lake) in full size in a hard shell case. And it had the raw elevations prior to being flooded. So cool to see you still in 2nd place. You know what to do right? Don't get lazy. This is a lifetime achievement in fishing dear~! :D
I thought of another possible reason why I didn't stick with topwater.... not making excuses haha. but seriously... maybe it was a subconscious decision. I was not able to get close to the schools at all. They'd spook. So... I'm able to sling a Senko for quite a ways. That made it possible for me to get a bait to them without spooking. There's no way I would have gotten that #7 firetiger popper at them. Even though they were in a frenzy... the were very aware of me.
@@OldLadyAngler please allow me to quote Dr. Spock by saying, "Logical reasoning Captain" :P If I'm a bass schooling in a feeding frenzy I'm not allowing being spooked to change my appetite. Nice to see you up in my neck of the woods. I haven’t tried Horseshoe lake yet...gonna have to put it on my list. Have you tried Rodman? Congrats on the 2nd place...love to see you end up in the top 3 this month. Tight lines.
Hey Bill! It was a very pretty area! And I bet the fishing is great pre spawn time! Yes I've done a few videos on Rodman. I've caught some nice ones in the spillway and only a couple on the reservoir side. That spillway is insanely crowded though. Go check out my videos there. I caught a really nice striper. My PB.
Hello OLA, how come you don't fish out of the Slayer 12 LT much? I'm looking to purchase a pedal kayak and the Slayer 10 and Slayer 12 LT are on my short list.
Hi Rich, I don't have a fish finder on it yet. Nor do I have my camera mounts / paddle mount / rod holders etc. I mainly bought it to use when I go down south and fish hydrilla filled lakes. It's a better boat when there is a good amount of PADDLING to be done. But for all my other fishing.... it's Ol' Battle Axe Slayer 10. Both are excellent yaks though. You can't go wrong with either.
Thanks for the response OLA! Is the seat height in reference to the pedal similar on both kayaks?I forget if you had seat risers on your Ol' Battle Axe Slayer 10, but would there be a need for one on the 12 LT?
The seat feels pretty much the same. I did order seat risers and should get them this week. It's only 1.5 inch but to me... it makes a difference. I have a short torso.... so the back of my PFD tends to hit the top of the seat. Drives me nuts!!! So the seat risers get me just a little bit higher and my PFD clears the seat. I like the elevated pedaling angle too.
Thanks again for the great info OLA!How about the difference between the two in the amount of effort you have to exert in peddling?I ask because my home lake is about 800 acres and about 10 miles in length (it's a skinny reservoir).I don't envision traversing all of it per outing, but I do plan to cover about 6 miles of it one way.I've heard that Slayer 12 LT was fast, but how about the Slayer 10.Do you think it will be a chore to peddle this with the Slayer 10?
Thanks Ola for an interesting video, you got my Like & Sub. I live 5 minutes from this lake and was wondering is there a place where I can stand to fish instead paddling out to the water?
I have and I've actually caught a fish on one. haha. once! haha. I have a hard time with jigs in general. I did throw the Larew Hard Head jig on this trip. It's a wobble head jig. No hits at all. The bottom of that lake was mostly sand.
