There was actually a game in the 91-92 season between the Pens and Leafs where halfway through the first period Pittsburgh was up 4-0 and Lemieux was in on three of them and I thought, "Oh no, tonight Sittler's record falls." Fortunately it didn't! GO LEAFS GO!!
40 years to the day your record for most points in a game still stands. I remember that game like it happened yesterday. How time flies and I feel like a very old man!!!
I remember when I was a kid watching that game it was pretty amazing thing to watch and I was a Boston Bruin fan but I am a hockey fan that has nothing but respect when a team & great players just out plays your favourite team! you can't win them all, but all you can do is try your best, Darryl Sittler a true hockey legend
No ones can or have broke it Wayne had all the time in the world !!!! All the POWER to Mr. Sittler a Legend as well I hope all Canadians are proud but all hockey fans world wide respect what this great Champion did in History !!!! Legend God Bless .
@@Nuxalkman Yes, #99 and the rest of the 80's Oilers would have had a real shot at it especially if they faced teams like the early 80's Leafs and goalies like Jiri Crha.
As a teenager back in the seventies I was more dedicated to the Leafs than to my school work. The most vivid games in memory were Sittler's 10-point night, Turnbull's five goal game, Salming's stick-in-the-eye against the Islanders, Mike Palmateer's 1-0 shutout against the Habs and Dan Maloney's sucker punch that knocked-out Brian (Mack Truck) Glennie (I was in the red zone at the Gardens that night and we were ready to start a riot!) Those were the days.
Remember Salming and his sliding into shots, nobody had ever seen that done so often. I did not know this but he holds the leafs record for the best career plus minus. I remember him as an excellent player who seemed to have a knack for getting the puck out of Toronto zone.
Great summary. I'll add the time those Flyer players got arrested, and the night nobody knew who would be coaching and Roger Neilson appeared to a standing ovation (I've never seen footage of that since).
I'm a Habs fan and I remember seeing the highlights of the Leafs' 1-0 decision over the Habs. The Habs would lose only eight games that entire season! At least it was my favorite Leafs' player at the time, Lanny, who scored the game's only goal. I remember Ian Turnbull aimed for an empty-netter, but he hit the goal post! Gotta love 70s hockey!
It's February 7, 2018. Happy 42nd anniversary of your magnificent performance !!!! Your record has stood the test of times and hopefully it will last many more years to come. That year 1976 was very special to you Darryl. You had the 10-point game that night, and later a 5-goal game in the playoffs against the Flyers, and to top it all scored the beautiful overtime goal against Czechoslovakia to win the Canada Cup for the whole country. A true Maple Leaf !!!!!
This happened exactly 35 years today! I watched that game on a Saturday night and I remember it like it was yesterday. Those were the days my friend; wish they were here again. Thanks for the memories!!!!
@kencar63 Don't forget 1976 was a special year for Darryl Sittler besides this amazing night on Feb 7. I watched him score 5 goals against Philadelphia in a playoff game and of course who can forget what he did for Team Canada against Czechoslovakia later that year (I sure didn't). He scored the game and cup winning goal in overtime to bring home the Canada Cup. The sight of so many great hockey players from this country (many are in the Hockey Hall of Fame) jumping on him was priceless.
What a performance by Sittler! One of my favourite Leafs of all time. Love that a Leaf player holds the record for most points in a game and I hope it stands for all eternity (knock on wood)!
Thank you for posting! I followed Darryl's amazing hockey career since he was a junior with the London Knights. Seems like yesterday. It was wonderful to hear Bill Hewitt's play-by-play and Brian MacFarlane's commentary. Great memories from a time long gone. Happy 35th anniversary, Darryl!!
I remember watching this as a kid while studying for an exam. I remember after the 2nd period thinking, what is the record for most points in a game. This ranks up there as one of the hardest records to break
Still remember this game like it was yesterday. Darryl Sittler, Borje Salming, Lanny McDonald, Tiger Williams: thanks for all the great memories guys! GO LEAFS GO!!
I went to a lot of Boston Braves ( AHL ) games in the early 70s in the Old Boston Gahden. Those were the days. Give me Old North Station any day. Anyway, I watched Dave Reese for a couple of years. Him and that team or teams are some of My best childhood memories. Being from Medford I only lived about 5 miles from The Gahden. Thank God. 🙏
I was 15 from Boston, hockey player and it was shocking, #1 that bruins had that many scored against them and the fact that sittler had 10 points, 5 is amazing.
Time flies by so mercilessly. Watching the highlites of this game makes me want to reminisce so much even though we may be moving on in years. Besides #27, I also want to pay tribute to #21 and #7. Thank you so much for the wonderful memories. We all dream about something in life. You guys got to live it!!!!
I remember watching this live on Hockey Night in Canada on CBC when I was only 9 yrs old and jumping around the living room each time Sittler racked up another point. Even at that young age I knew I was watching something historic.
I always thought that Boston players left Reece in the lurch deliberately in order to get Cheesy back into the lineup. The Boston management sent him back to the farm after this game but I thought he had an NHL future. He would have made a decent foil for Palmateer. I remember watching only the last couple of periods of this game and being mesmerized. It was a strange feeling, right?
I listened to that game while working as a dishwasher in Banff. By the 3rd period It was almost surreal and it seemed like Sittler was the only name you heard out of the radio. The record is now over 40 years old and if neither Gretzky or Lemieux could break it then it really is a record that may never be broken.
I remember watching this game - 35 years ago? Man, I am feeling old!! But it could not have happened to a more classy player than Darryl Sittler. A shame he had to play for Ballard, he deserved better.
I remember watching this game as a kid. I didn't even realize that Sitler was getting so many points until the beginning of the third period when of the color commentary guys mentioned it. It was one of those freaks of nature things, obviously luck played into it, but 6 goals and 4 assists, a night to remember.
Nice to look back at the Leafs teams in those days, just a few years later, the Leafs so called talent would consist of the likes of Jiri Crha, Rocky Saganiuk and Normand Aubin.
they said the rocket held the record with 8 points but he actually shared the record with burt omstead who scored 8 points with montreal as well & he did it 10 years after the rocket.8 points one game has been accomplished 13 times now by 11 different hockey players,Wayne & mario both accomplished it twice.Only one player in nhl history has ever recorded over 8 points in one game & thats sittlers 10 points in 1976 which stands to this day.
Still a Leafs fan at 57 and I still remember this game quite well. I was eight days away from turning 14. Used to think Gretzky would eventually break this record or equal it. It still stands and the league has changed so much that I think the record is safe.
Even eight points in one game is very hard to get. Sittler's record may never be broken or even matched. For a player to even match the record, one team would need to score ten goals in one game. How often does that happen? And one player would need to be involved in all ten plays. Another unlikely event. I think it's safe to say that this record will never be broken.
Even more remarkable was Sittler's 5 goal night in the playoffs vs the great Bernie Parent of the champion Flyers. Parent may have been the greatest goalie of all time. Goal 4 was a classic scored from his knees and it is on youtube
@Stevessl Wow... you're right, it was 35 years ago exactly. This segment was done in honour of its 20th anniversary, which, 15 years later, means it's been almost as long again. Man that makes me feel old.
Sittler was a great player, a great leader, Tiger Williams said we'd follow him into a burning house...As good as he was he was he was still a little underrated, which was crap. Bobby Clarke even admitted, Sittler was better than me. Even drafted his son. Had he finished his career in toronto he would of been ranked the best leaf ever ok no cups, but it took Sundin 60 games more to break Sittlers record of all time points as a leaf. Another thing he still has the record for most goals and points at Maple Gardens. How's that for your hat!?
@tymeformike. This story let's you know that i am a devout Leafs fan. When that Sittler 10 point game was going on, i was listening to it on radio. On a short wave radio in New Jersey,US. I now live in Colorado, still follow the Leafs. Man it's painful, this team needs a first line center something fierce.
Wow, the memories. Sports was so much more fun back then. I was a Leafs fan growing up in the states, i am a Leafs fan since about 1973. Hopefully Burke has them on the right track. I am losing patience.
I was there (section 94, row D, seat 5) and have 2 main memories; 1. the buzz at the start of the 3rd period. If you were having a smoke underneath the seats, HNIC intermission would have told you he was a point away (from Richard and Bert Olmstead), and if you were in your seat, there was a digital sign above the Blues that announced it. 2. The place went ape on the 9th point. Ape like I'd never seen it before or since.
James Wilkes I was there too. Gold seats row E just down from the box where Ballard etc hung out. Best game ever. Still remember everyone staying for the summary after the game and cheering every point. Most of the goals were scored right in front of us. My main memory is feeing that he couldn't miss that night even scoring while standing behind the net.
I think I enjoy & loved hockey back in the 1970s & 1980s more then how hockey is today! I don't know why that is but I just fine hockey today just not the same any more!
They said Richard held the record at the time with 8 points but he actually shared the record with bert omstead who did it in 1954 (10 years after Richard) with 4 goals & 4 assist.
Well thats great to know, I was a 13 year old Boston area kid who saw him as somebody who reached the top, and he did. I never came clsoe but even at 46 I still dream
The Honest truth. I was a Sittler fan and i was in grade 6 at the time. I told my Montreal Canadians friend who was a big Lafleur fan, you watch the game tomorrow Sittler will have a big game. Sure enough i couldn't believe it, neither could my Canadians friend. As they use to say, you have to be good to be lucky, and lucky to be good. BTW those were the names we called each other when ever we played soccer. Those were the days.
In this game Darryl Sittler scored from just about every possible angle. He scored from in front of the net, from behind the net, from both sides, a long shot and a tap-in in mid air. It seems like he could do no wrong on this night. Well, almost no wrong. I remember seeing one of his shots ring off the goalpost near the end of the game. If he had scored, that would be goal number 7 in the game. Guess you can't win them all!!!!
I was 15 years old.I was sleeping over my friends house.I think there was 1 fight in the game as well.Bob McGill and someone for the Bruins. What a great game to watch.
memories both of a great hockey player having an incredible night, while another player (if not an entire team) was not; and of Sportsline that predated the all sports channels, at least in Canada. I remember being in university and arranging a break in studying to watch Hebscher and Tatti (and later Gene Principe who appears above) analyze the night that was in sports.
The joke going around at the time was that the Boston goalie Reese was so despondent after the game that he jumped in front of a subway, but it went through his legs
Seems like a really good guy. Amazing he got 10% of his points, and 15% of his goals, for the season, in one game. And no one has even got 9 points in a game. 👍🏼
8 has been accomplished 13 times by 11 different hockey players Wayne & Mario both doing it twice. You are right thought only Sittler has recorded over 8 points in a game.
@theborealisman. We actually had the top notch dman in Randy Carlyle, who won a Norris Trophy in Pitt. But dumbo Ballard traded him, and George Fergsuon for Dave Burrows. Ferguson was the 2nd line center, who went on to have solid years in Pitt. All we really needed was a 2nd line winger. Palmateer was solid in net. The best trade Ballard ever did was Tiger Williams and Jerry Butler, for Rick Vaive and Bill Derlago.
True. And he got all eight of his points in the final two periods of that game, plus three in the first period of his next game, meaning he got 11 points across three consecutive periods. Whatever that's worth (probably nothing).
I think the Bruins felt that they were really missing Bobby Orr during this game. Makes you think that if Bobby was playing, would this have ever happened?
Any team is going to miss a Bobby Orr, but the Bruins transitioned away from Orr almost seamlessly. And one of the reasons is that on November 7th 1975 they traded Phil Esposito and Carol Vadnais to the Rangers for Jean Ratelle and D-Man Brad Park. Park wasn't the offensive force that Bobby had been, but he could play as many minutes as Orr and be an offensive a defensive force that was about as good as anyone this side of Orr. The Bruins finished in first in 76 and went to finals in 77 and 78. Would Orr have made the team better? Absolutely, but I don't think his absence in this game had any bearing on the outcome or on Sittler's getting 10 points.
I remember watching this on my little b&w tv on Boston's TV-38. I was a fan of Dave Reece ,an American goalie was rare, and i had been telling my friends how the B's had this kid who was for real. The sad thing is that I don't think he ever played again in the league and until this game he had been solid. I would like to hear his side and what ever became of him...Grapes should have made Cheesy go in though, he did Reece wrong.sigh....still pisses me off.
Apparently, Reese was very dejected after the game and his grief became unbearable when he learned hed been sent to the minors. Legend has it he decided to end his life and on a cold night jumped on the train tracks before an oncoming train. In what must have been a bitter reminder for him of the Sittler night, the train went between his legs.
Anyone out there remember Ian Turnbull having a career game with 6-8 points. I've always confused Turnbull having a great night with Sittler's epic game?
Ian scored 5 goals in a game against Detroit Feb. 2, 1977. Almost a year to the day after Sittler. Ian's five goals in a game still stands as a record for most goals in a game by a defenceman.
He is right when he told Sittler he was 1 point away from Richard record of 8 points (which has been accomplished 13 times now) but Richard wasn't the only one to hold that record at the time another Montreal hockey player tied it in 1954 (10 years after richard did it) & his name was burt Omstead & believe he did it with 4 goals & 4 assist & the Rocket did it with 5 goals & 3 assist.
Actually, there is one more record that Wayne doesn't hold and that is Mario's accomplishment of "scoring for the cycle." In his five goal game, Mario scored a PP goal, even strength goal, a short handed goal, one on a penalty shot and the fifth one into an empty net. I'm guessing that someone will break Sittler's record before anyone ever does what Mario Lemieux did.
Any leafs fan dead or alive will always remember Darryl Sittlers 10 point record game I'm 36 and a die hard leafs fan I know about it cause of having the leafs t.v. channel
This is what happens when a goaltender is having the worst day of his life at the exact same time that a great position player is having the very best day of his life. This CAN happen again but you need this exact combination to make it happen. Having said that, part of the reason for this 10 point game happening was Cheevers' refusal to go into the game in spite of Grapes telling him to get in there not once but twice.
Another thing I miss about the old Gardens is Paul Morris on the public address system. His voice is simply iconic!

@kbinco I've been a fan since...'gulp'...1968...yes, I know all about pain....but I also remember watching this game...
Absolutely.
@brazy321 because the NHL annoyed me by putting a stupid ad on it... but I'll make it public again. You should be able to see it now.
The most recent player to come even close was Sam Gagner, who scored eight points for the Oilers versus Chicago on February 2, 2012.
True. And he got all eight of his points in the final two periods of that game, plus three in the first period of his next game, meaning he got 11 points across three consecutive periods. Whatever that's worth (probably nothing).
i skate with him all the time. he is up in NH
Hands down the greatest Leaf ever.
They had the SMT line and they were the best from east to west
I remember watching this on my little b&w tv on Boston's TV-38. I was a fan of Dave Reece ,an American goalie was rare, and i had been telling my friends how the B's had this kid who was for real. The sad thing is that I don't think he ever played again in the league and until this game he had been solid. I would like to hear his side and what ever became of him...Grapes should have made Cheesy go in though, he did Reece wrong.sigh....still pisses me off.
I was 6 years old when this happened and 9 years since their last cup and I thought it as a long time without a cup. haha
Sittler is also the last player to record 6 goals in a game. The record is 7 by joe malone which was set way back in 1918-1919.
He is right when he told Sittler he was 1 point away from Richard record of 8 points (which has been accomplished 13 times now) but Richard wasn't the only one to hold that record at the time another Montreal hockey player tied it in 1954 (10 years after richard did it) & his name was burt Omstead & believe he did it with 4 goals & 4 assist & the Rocket did it with 5 goals & 3 assist.
how come we cant access this great viv anymore?
One of the best players to never win a Stanley Cup.
Yes,the closest was Gangier from Edmonton a few years ago.8 points.I don't think Sittlers record will ever fall.
That was 2012, you have to go back to 88&89, when Mario had 3 different - 8pts nights. 2 of them were only 6weeks apart.
@kencar63 agreed. a lot of those shots were hard, deflected and well placed.
Sittler, Sittler Sittlerrrrrrrrrr (for those that know)
My grandpa was at that game :D
Any leafs fan dead or alive will always remember Darryl Sittlers 10 point record game I'm 36 and a die hard leafs fan I know about it cause of having the leafs t.v. channel
Not even Wayne Gretzky had a game like this!
This is what happens when a goaltender is having the worst day of his life at the exact same time that a great position player is having the very best day of his life. This CAN happen again but you need this exact combination to make it happen.
Having said that, part of the reason for this 10 point game happening was Cheevers' refusal to go into the game in spite of Grapes telling him to get in there not once but twice.
....and I was there......woo hoooooo.......
I watch it.....
Even Lemieux and Gretzky couldn't duplicate this.
