Spliced Paradox Polymer Clay Cane Tutorial

  • Learn how to create a striking spliced paradox cane out of polymer clay.
    Some common steps (e.g. skinner blends) are covered only briefly, but here's some resources that may help with those skills:
    * Written version of this tutorial: motleywoods.com/2020/03/09/sp...
    * Uncut footage of the cane assembly and reduction: • RAW: Paradox cane asse...
    * How to do a skinner blend: • Getting Started with P...
    * How to do a Skinner Blend Jellyroll/Bullseye Cane: • Getting Started with P...
    * How to reduce a cane: • Getting Started with P...
    ================================================================================
    Clay recipes (Kato):
    * Violet: 1 part Magenta, 2 parts Purple
    * Sea Green: 1 part Turquoise, 2 parts Green
    ================================================================================
    Five critical steps:
    1. Reduce and reshape by squeezing the middle -- not the ends
    2. Make sure the long back side is well-joined so it doesn’t split later
    3. Re-shape the cane components to a curved “J” shape, not an “L” shape
    4. Always keep corners and edges sharp
    5. Take your time reshaping and arranging the final pieces

      Quiet, I totally agree. I love instructors who tell you what and why and how little actions can make or break the cane. These are the little details that could possibly take days, if not weeks to comprehend using the trial and error method. Motely Woods, thank you for producing such a scientifically informative video.

    I'm a beginner when it comes to polymerclay, this probably takes time to learn.

    Thank you SO very much for posting this tutorial!! I know how much time, effort & heart goes into making a video. You are so generous to share. I absolutely LOVE how TO THE POINT you are. People have complained on other tutes that it goes too fast. Maybe they don't know they're able slow it down by clicking the "gear" icon on the bottom of the vid (settings). I so love that you don't pat, turn, pet & all that other unnecessary stuff!!! You didn't say UHM even one time. I LOVE you for that!!! I also appreciate that you put links underneath. I hope to see more things from you because your style is the best!!! Thank you again.

    This is a great cane. I have not watched a tutorial from you before and while I really appreciate you pointing out the critical steps, I wish you could have slowed down when putting the 3 pieces together. You dont have to talk thru it all, but slowing down would have been very helpful as well. I felt like you were on the clock and if you went over it would be disastrous. Please keep this in mind on you next tutorials. Thank you so much for a great cane.

    WOW! You just jumped to the top of my list for great tutorials! Your thorough explanations are great! My only suggestion would be to slow down when you are talking. I guess if you record while watching the sped up video, that might be difficult, though. Anyway, thank you, and I am going to try this one again. Last time I struggled a lot with the tutorial. Thank you!!

      Thanks! I’ll try to slow down when speaking, appreciate the feedback. I’m a fast speaker in general. I actually write out the script ahead of time and read it without the video playing.

    • @Binkles
      @Binkles ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MotleyWoods Noooo! Don’t slow down; tell folks they can set the speed slower using the “gear” icon. When people drone on super-slowly, I’m forced to watch at 2x speed, and sometimes, even _that’s_ not enough! Life’s too short to watch people making gradients by rolling clay through the pasta machine twenty times, and then reducing a cane for half an hour. I really wish folks’d instead follow Fiona Abel-Smith’s lead and link in the description to Skinner blend-making and cane-reducing vids so those who need ‘em can see ‘em and those of us who don’t don’t hafta sit here tapping to get through the boring parts, then having to go back again because we misguessed where the dull part ended.
      (I don’t understand why people don’t know how to speed up and slow down vids after all this time! TH-cam’s been around a couple decades, and folks should know its features by now!)
      Thanks for the handy tips so my paradox canes come out a little straighter! Great job, and thanks a million for not using noise words so I don’t hafta contemplate killing myself so I don’t hafta hear ‘em. 😉
