I was an EMT. This song brought me back to that farmhouse where I had had my second death. I was singing along with the music, but soon I was unable to because I was tearing up. Many people said this song is about breaking up. For me, though, this song is about us the medics. We, who fanatically pressed on someone’s chest for 30 minutes, trying to bring them back, only for the doctor to say it was all over and we could stop. ‘Say something, I am giving up on you…’ Please. Just say something. Anything. ‘I am sorry that I couldn’t get to you…’ In the countryside, it was not uncommon for us to arrive in as long as 15 mins. ‘Anywhere I would have followed you...’ And yes. For a while after that call, I did feel like I should go where they went.
What a gorgeous interpretation of this song. Understated, elegant, beautifully harmonic. At times it’s almost spare compared to the original and I think this is frankly the better version. Well done.
This girl's youth makes the song feel like it's about a sibling, as opposed to a romantic, relationship. Interestingly changes the concept for me. Great delivery!
Because we’re different in age, we tried to set it up so we’d feel like storytellers instead of romantic partners. We hadn’t considered siblings, but that works too. The lyrics are so universal-about hope, grief, and the desire to connect. It’s cool how many different meanings can be found in a well written song. Glad you enjoyed listening to our performance!
Why do you view that as a negative comment debbymoore? The narrative between brother and sister could be about anything. I wasn't thinking anything inappropriate. Tbh the story I imagined was of saying goodbye to a family member because of drug addiction.

He said it was written about 4years before it took off. Now it's been a bit and I'm guessing that the distribution studio has scrubbed everything to that reference. They do control the narrative and anything affecting the commas between the dollar sign and decimal is going to be scripted. He did say however that it came from a time when he' felt so alone'. Read between the lines.....maybe, but listen to the lyrics from that perspective. It's heartbreaking.
Very interesting. Yep I can understand the label not wanting to turn people away with religious themes. Personally I think the heart of all religious music is deep reverence, awe, and beauty, even though I don’t always agree with the decisions people make on the basis of religion (wars, prejudice, etc.). It’s a complicated theme for sure.
