Also it’s really interesting to me that you’re recommending the modern translation of the Odyssey :) As I am Russian, we have only one “traditional” translation of the Iliad and the Odyssey that everyone reads, but as we discussed it with my Latin teacher, they have a lot of flaws. The Odyssey definitely needs a modern Russian translation but unfortunately the translator who started doing it didn’t receive any financial support from any publishers etc and so we still don’t have it 😨

Oh man! 😭 I hope that you’re able to get that modern translation someday! It’s so much nicer to have an edition that’s accessible to modern readers, and like you said, to fix up flaws from older versions.

gregoreads definitely agree with this, but appreciating old translations is nice too (with old words and style), if I had an option I’d read both 😂

Hey!! Thank you for recommendations:) I’m a fan of classics but haven’t read some books 🤭 You recommended The Odyssey, what do you think about The Iliad?

I’m glad you enjoyed! 😁 The Iliad is pretty great too, with so many famous scenes and characters. The reason I like The Odyssey more is that it’s more of an adventure/journey story, while The Iliad is more war/battle heavy. If someone is reading it on their own and they’re not used to classics, The Iliad might end up seeming tedious at points cause there’s loooots of fights and descriptions of armour. But The Iliad is definitely still exciting stuff and I’m fond of it too!

gregoreads oh yes I see what you mean :) I’m glad you still like the Iliad too haha, I’m just a fan of it and I don’t know why

Thank you for these recommendations ☺ I'm French and I would like to read classics in English so you gave me some ideas. What is the easiest one to read? And just to know your opinion about it: do you think that "Little women" is not too complicate to understand?

Glad I was able to help!! Of the ones I mentioned, I’d say Anne of Green Gables would be the easiest, followed by Emily Wilson’s Odyssey, since it’s essentially modern English. As for Little Women, I think it’s relatively easy to understand, although the story can be very slow at times, and the book is super long. I think you’ll be all right with the actual writing, though!
