    I love that you’re honest about which ones you’ve actually read haha 😂 Quick question about the last flexi-bound ones: are they still good quality as in font size, paper quality? Are they easy to hold open, or is it the kind of binding you have to force open and arms get tired while reading? Thanka

    • @powerfrenzy
      @powerfrenzy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The text block is the exact same between versions. So no change in font or size. The flexi-bounds are more akin to paperbacks in terms of how easy it is to keep open when reading.

    • @gregoreads4300
      @gregoreads4300 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, the type of paper and the font seem exactly the same as the hardbacks. The binding does feel a little harder to open than the hardback ones, but once you’ve opened them a couple times they have more give. Granted, both of the flexibound ones I have are only around 200 pages, so it may be a bit more tiresome for bigger books. They also make kind of alarming noises when you first open them, but the binding on mine have never actually broken, hahaha. But they definitely aren’t super restrictive.

    • @gregoreads4300
      @gregoreads4300 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad I was able to help!! Of the ones I mentioned, I’d say Anne of Green Gables would be the easiest, followed by Emily Wilson’s Odyssey, since it’s essentially modern English. As for Little Women, I think it’s relatively easy to understand, although the story can be very slow at times, and the book is super long. I think you’ll be all right with the actual writing, though!

    Wives and Daughters is a favorite classic of mine and my favorite Gaskell as of yet so I hope you enjoy once you get to it :) Also, if you haven't already read it I'd definitely recommend The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins. I enjoyed The Moonstone but I loved The Woman in White! It happens to have one of my favorite literary heroines of all time. Georgette Heyer is another great author to get into; I started reading her works after I finished Austen and I went on a straight marathon until I ran out of books I had on hand.

    • @gregoreads4300
      @gregoreads4300 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, I’m so looking forward to both! I’m kind of expecting to like The Woman in White more, so I’m doing a save-the-best-for-last type thing by reading Moonstone first 😂 And I’m really hoping to fall in love with Heyer!

  • @marianneguevara8279
    @marianneguevara8279 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I completely understand your feelings with The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. I do admire that it unashamedly brought to light issues with regards to domestic abuse within marriages, something that was certainly not being tackled or really acknowledged in Victorian lit. But yeah, while reading it I did get a feeling that this book was more of a message with a story wrapped around it rather than a story with a message. If it weren't for the struggle and social issue that the character Helen was facing, I wouldn't really find her all that interesting to be honest. The Tenant of Wildfell Hall seems to be one of those classics in recent years that get so much praise and hype solely for its themes and message. Its not my favorite Bronte I've read and I don't think its necessarily better than her sisters' works. Personally I find Emily to have better prose and Charlotte to have characters with more depth to them. Sorry for the long comment hehe; its just that 99% of the time whenever I see The Tenant of Wildfell Hall discussed its usually someone raving about it, so it was nice to see someone with a differing opinion. Cheers!

    • @gregoreads4300
      @gregoreads4300 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, I love a long comment! I totally agree. It just had so much potential and then kind of veered in this unexpected direction. Plus, just, why did the main guy have to be such a lowkey creep lol?? Charlotte is definitely my fave of the Bronte sisters from what I’ve read so far, which makes sense because I’m a sucker for good characters above all else!

    • @marianneguevara8279
      @marianneguevara8279 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gregoreads4300 When Gilbert straight up takes a whip to a guy's head and just leaves him on the side of the road I was like "nope". Jane Eyre remains my favorite Bronte novel mainly due to her fascinating characters.

  • @PageTurnersWithKatja
    @PageTurnersWithKatja 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Remember enjoying The Moonstone, love Gaskell and want to read more Heyer. I feel like the prices for Georgette Heyer's books have increased since the release of Bridgerton on Netflix - interesting as these regency books are tamer than Julia Quinns

    • @gregoreads4300
      @gregoreads4300 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ooh I haven’t noticed that but it makes a lot of sense! I think people have an idea of Heyer being somehow more prestigious since her books are older, which would maybe contribute to that. At least I got Arabella before any price hikes 😂

    • @gregoreads4300
      @gregoreads4300 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Also it’s really interesting to me that you’re recommending the modern translation of the Odyssey :) As I am Russian, we have only one “traditional” translation of the Iliad and the Odyssey that everyone reads, but as we discussed it with my Latin teacher, they have a lot of flaws. The Odyssey definitely needs a modern Russian translation but unfortunately the translator who started doing it didn’t receive any financial support from any publishers etc and so we still don’t have it 😨

    • @gregoreads4300
      @gregoreads4300 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh man! 😭 I hope that you’re able to get that modern translation someday! It’s so much nicer to have an edition that’s accessible to modern readers, and like you said, to fix up flaws from older versions.

    • @tanyasinspirations
      @tanyasinspirations 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @gregoreads4300
      @gregoreads4300 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m glad you enjoyed! 😁 The Iliad is pretty great too, with so many famous scenes and characters. The reason I like The Odyssey more is that it’s more of an adventure/journey story, while The Iliad is more war/battle heavy. If someone is reading it on their own and they’re not used to classics, The Iliad might end up seeming tedious at points cause there’s loooots of fights and descriptions of armour. But The Iliad is definitely still exciting stuff and I’m fond of it too!

    I need to pick up the Gemma Doyle Trilogy but I just recently read Beauty Queens, and I didn't really like it. So I've been put off buying any more Libba Bray until I've read my copy of The Diviners 😅 I really liked The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, but I couldn't get into the second book in the trilogy 😢 I was quite young when I read it though too! OOOO you've made Eon sound really interesting! YAAASSS I love The Infernal Devices! Because I live in London, I sort of want to do like TID tour of modern day London. But I feel like I would need to reread the series to tab all the places mentioned in the series. Not that I'm complaining 😅 I love Jem!

      Beauty Queens is definitely a whole different genre from Gemma Doyle & The Diviners, so if you like historical fiction and fantasy there's still a chance you'll come to appreciate her! 😁 Honestly, I think I was just on such a hype kick at 12 years old to have more Lisbeth and zoomed through the Millenium trilogy without even understanding like 75% of it so I don't blame you 😂 And omg, when I was last in London I went to Blackfriar's Bridge and just had a moment there, my family was like wtf is this and I was like shhhhhhh it's IMPORTANT okay. That was the one place that really stuck in my mind from TID! Hahaha

      Haha I do like Historical Fiction! You might have slightly encouraged me to pick up Libba Bray sooner 😄 Hopefully you'll come to appreciate the series more when you get round to rereading it then! Have you seen the American/Swedish adaptions of the books? I bet you could feel the spirits of Will and Jess waiting around for Jem/Tessa's wedding 😉 Westminster Abbey is also one that I can really envision too!

      Yess 😁 And yes, I love both movie adaptations! I especially love the Swedish Lisbeth! Omg I'm going back in about a month and I'm going to be thinking about this again now :')

      I'm surprised that you like both 😂 Most people just like the Swedish adaptions 😂 I hope you have a lovely time in London then! If you ever need tips on the more secret locations on where to go 😉

      I'm a huge Daniel Craig fan, so it was impossible for me not to like the American one honestly 😂 Thanks! Hehe I'll be sure to keep that in mind 😏

    The millenium triology has been recommended to me by a friend, it's not really my genre but it has so much praise I am tempted to pick it up! 😊 Eon sounds really interesting too but I've never heard of it!! 😯

      I don't read many crime novels, but these ones just have such memorable characters and crazy plots that I was hooked. 😁Yeah I'm surprised Eon hasn't had more traction on BookTube! But I definitely recommend it 😏
