Water, Fan (battery powered in Texas), 2 flashlights/lanterns battery operated, chair and or cot, skoal and spit cup, phone, crowbar and hammer and a small set of tools as this lady explained. :)
Excellent point! Storm shelters may be geocoded by the county, but no one will be looking unless the storm/tornado passed through your immediate area! Be your own first responder!
In all the clips about storm shelters that I have watched this is the only one that covered what should be an obvious possible issue. Thank you and glad you had that phone to call your fella. Leads me to Another thing I highly recommend. Tell several neighbors (not just one home but several) and several family members who live close by about the storm shelter and ask them to check on you after a bad storm comes. Just a phone call if nothing else. Be sure both of you have your phones and battery backups so they don’t die. The door opens up and outward: if a huge tree limb, or the roof of a house, or a car gets thrown by a storm onto that lid; you are not ever getting out. The tool box won’t do any good. After a huge storm Emergency services are going to be busy for days or even weeks. Do not rely on them saving you from a death trap. Hopefully; your family and neighbors are going to come looking for you. If you tell them in advance…
Hi John thanks for commenting. Yes it should be an obvious issue, but yet we didn't think of it, I guess because it was new at the time, don't know. You're absolutely correct about something falling on the door. When I have to take shelter, I tell my son to check on me now. Thank you!
For those saying notify your fire department so they can check on you after a storm, I hope you are prepared to wait a week or more. In the case of a devastating storm, they will be so overwhelmed it may take that long to check all these shelters.
Thanks for sharing because watching it makes you feel like you’re inside the shelter. My daughter and I are building one before the next storm season arrives - we had our first experience with tornado weather in our home last July. And we found that we were not quite prepared. The weather on the northern prairies is getting bad - it was predicted by climate scientists in a National Geographic magazine that I read in 1986. A giant twister - a mile wide at times - stayed on the ground for three hours during the Tilston, Manitoba tornado.
Thank you very much for your comment. I don't think you'll be disappointed at all if you build one or have one built. We had a small tornado 2 years ago that tore off shingles, and knocked down a large tree right behind this shelter. Thank God it fell the opposite way but I could hear it outside. I'm so happy you're getting a shelter especially since you've already went through one and survived, many people don't. I never knew they had tornadoes in Canada but you'll be happy your building one for both you and your daughter. I watch the weather closely and I go out there ahead of time if I know one is coming my way. Stay safe and God bless.
Must of happened long long time because shelter looks like TLC needed. I repaint my trim around door and door it self to keep rusting from forming. I put covered area over mine to keep water at bay in soil on out side. I use w-D40 on Attic fan to keep it moving without noise. My shelter is 15 years old and looks new.
A small power inverter would be a nice addition as well. With a power inverter you can charge your phone batteries and even set up a small AC powered fan to help keep air circulating in the event you have to stay down there for a few days. 👍🙂
I keep a battery powerd to angle grinder in ours So that hopefully if something falls over the door I can cut myself out. The important part is make sure that you keep that battery charged. The other part is i tried to install our shelter away from the houses that way hopefully it's away from any debris. I also keep a sledge hammer, shovel and earpligs
Thank you ItzOnlyJJ, I'd like to redecorate and paint the walls a calming color lol. It gets a bit intense when your down in there and a tornado is passing by. Had a small tornado pass over and knocked down a huge tree right behind that shelter. Thank you for your nice comment.
Ann I'm realizing a lot of people have never seen the inside of one of these shelters now. It's a fairly common thing around here to either have a basement or a storm shelter, we have too many tornadoes not to have one. Thank you dear!
Hi lilstep noel, I just came upon your video when looking for maintenance videos for shelter doors. I'm glad you were able to get help quick. We've got a shelter like yours & that had to be scary. For a 16 year old shelter in the ground, yours looks great! Thanks again for the cautionary. Our handle is the kind where a metal bar goes into the door frame when it closes. But, it could malfunction & I'd have to call a family member from my cellphone to tell them I was in the "concrete pit" as we've named it.
Oh your so welcome JD. I felt compelled to make this video since it wasn't a very pleasant experience, quite scary actually. You take care and Merry Christmas.
Now THAT`S a Tornado Shelter !!! Thanks for the heads-up & glad you weren`t 'hurt' in your incident. Hope you never have to use it in a real weather emergency; consider it great LIFE INSURANCE !
Thank blusnuby2 for stopping by and commenting. I've had to go into this shelter many times and I'm so glad we got it when they were fairly reasonable. Merry Christmas.
Wow, glad you had your cell phone and were able to get hold of your husband to get out. That could have been truly dangerous. Thanks for warning others.
Oh I have some water stashed in that bucket, along with some other items, but a battery operated fan is something I haven't bought yet. Thank you Dream Weaver.
Joyce yes it was scary mainly because it was so hot, I even tried to put my face up to the vents Lol, didn't help. Yes I truly felt a little voice said "take your cell phone with you". I rarely ever carry a cell phone with me. Thank you Joyce for coming by my friend.
Gee, I wonder what was wrong with the handle - needed adjustment? improper installation? put on backward or upside-down? We'll never know, but we did learn that she lives to go lock herself in the shelter alone when hubs is at work. Light some candles, stretch out on the cot, read a little or whatever...😂
Exactly!!!!!! this is why id have a storm shelter with two doors exits, ideally id have one that was accessible from my house and like i said a shelter with two exits
lilstep noel not a problem. The pre paid cell would still be able to call 911 if you needed it. $19.99 is the cheapest I have been a my local Walmart. Also a bucket with cat litter also wouldn’t be a bad idea. Just in case you had to go. The DIY bucket a/c could also work.
I heard of a family that could not get out because of a tree that fell over the door... They swear a Bigfoot moved it for them by the noises they heard during tree removal and no one in site when they got out. 😍😍😍
I heard about that story too, they had a video about it on You Tube, it was quite interesting, to say the least. Thank you for stopping by and Merry Christmas.
the bad thing about using candles or kerosene lanterns they will burn up your oxygen good idea having a tool box handy a big pry bar might be handy to have iwould try using battery powered lights and notify 911 dispatch about your address so they know you have a storm shelter in case you cant get out good luck !!!
Hi David & Jen, please be sure to take some tools down there to get that handle off if you have too from inside. I am thankful for mine! It's scary here when tornadoes come near. Thank you for stopping by.
I felt people needed to know this Shylo. I just captured a swirling cloud not more than an hour ago, it's been storming here but hopefully done now. Love you!

Oh wow, that was probably scary too. What's funny is I had a similar incident when I had chickens. The wind blew the door shut and latched me in, but I reached through the chicken wire with a stick and unlatched it lol.

That is some story: GET A HANDLE ON THE SITUATION! (Its nice to hear your voice, (perhaps your from one of our southern states)😎 Once upon a Time I lived in Branson Missouri (& briefly in Eureka Springs Arkansas) and my Uncle lived in Little Rock.
Hi Zippor, yes the problem is fixed now. I never wanted to talk on my videos because of this accent I have Lol. I lived in Oklahoma for awhile and live in Kansas, so yes a South Central state. Eureka Springs Arkansas is a pretty town, or it was years ago. Lots of mountains down that way, but it's pretty. Never been to Little Rock, but I have relatives that live in Arkansas. Take care and thank you.
Best advice ever, very considerate of you to take the time to share.

thats why you need a neighbors phone number. glad you are ok.

Would you know how to fix the handle if you had to?
I've often wondered what a person would do if a tree or a car ended up across the door following a storm.
Yes that would sure be scary for sure.
You’re supposed to notify the local fire department or volunteer fire department and they are supposed to check that after a tornado
Our town has a registry, so if there's a storm, emergency personnel knows to come check it.
I've seen door designs that open inward just for that sole purpose good point
Exactly!!!!!! this is why id have a storm shelter with two doors exits, ideally id have one that was accessible from my house and like i said a shelter with two exits
Get a pre paid cellphone n leave it down there. Also get solar light n fan. You can install the wires down thru the vents.

Not really Pleiku, that's what I have just in case every thing else failed. Thank you for commenting.

It was for me, felt so helpless. Just a good thing I had the phone with me. Thanks Ricker's Homestead for stopping by.

@@lilstepnoel Most people enjoy acents from different parts of the country🙂
