Two things that come to mind are - They sold off a lot of social housing stock and didn't replace. Then we went through 10 years of austerity. Feels like a very different country to the one I grew up in the 90s. Gets sadder and sadder. Warm banks are now a thing... what next?
The Tories reduced/stopped money to local authorities because of austerity, this caused the local authorities to have to stop grants for and shut down places like in this video. There is nowhere near the help people used to get and more and more people are suffering because of it.
Tory government. Sold off council housing, ran down and underfunded the NHS, made the benefits system so punitive that people can't afford to even live on the amount they get to top up low paid jobs.
Respect to you all. How can this be happening in one of the richest countries in the world. It's all because of the conservatives. Cuts. Cuts. Cuts. That's all that the conservatives have done. I've worked for my local authority since 1980. I know more than anyone. I can see it all around my Borough. The question we need to ask the people in power is, where has all the money gone? It's time to start taxing the ultra wealthy.
Its shocking that councils let their buildings go to rot. I have heard about this, ceilings leaking, and council refuses to fix it for YEARS. dont they know that if the problem is caught right away it stops further problems. but ignoring it only leads to the entire place eventually being condemned. Councils across the UK arent getting enough money from the govt to operate these buildings. and there isnt enough housing to put people in who are homeless. I dont see any solution really because they just arent building enough housing.
I sympathise with these mothers, I was born 2 years before ww2 ended and things were much worse when certain things where rationed and we never knew any better. No one had a TV, cars, electric washing machine etc. Bombed houses were all around because we lived near the ship yards, but it's hard when you lived OK without problems and then suddenly things go mad
I was born a couple of years after that war, in the U.S. I grew up in poverty, but not the worst. We at least had heat and food, neither of which these women seem to have. Some are getting ready to be homeless. I think the UK is worse off than the poor in the U.S. I see that the council houses over there are falling apart. I wish these women had the materials to patch the leaks in the ceiling and paint the walls with moisture barrier paint, the same as people do with leaky basements. But I know they cannot afford to buy these materials. Nor can they afford to buy or run dehumidifiers. It is a disgrace. It is also likely that because the housing belongs to the government that any repairs must be authorized and performed by contract workers hired by the government. I expect that unauthorized "repairs" could mean getting evicted for violating the lease agreement. Unbelievable.
And after that they brought in the NHS, social housing and social security which was meant to prevent people having to struggle like that ever again! But now it's been stripped back so much by the Tory government.
These women are Amazing! This is so wonderful that they put this together themselves! And its said she has to say these women work! Even if they were not working NO WOMEN IN A MODERN COUNTRY SHOULD BE USING SOCKS FOR PERSONAL HYGIENE! Also that sweet young women who was crying about being homeless...the way thay situation was handled beautiful! Social workers need to take notes from these women. Respect to you. As someone familiar with these types of women's centers and support circles, somethings are different. No males are allowed inside in what I'm familiar with, that means no serving men tea, men in halls etc etc..donations from males are alright and males can benefit from the food bank but none are allowed in. It becomes clear that men must build their own support bridges..women work hard to get those buildings and everything, it serves best for their sanctuary space when it's women and children only..trust in the supports and privacy improves greatly then. Services can extend into midwifery, food preserving, trauma counselling etc. All the best! Women deserve a central support circle, a voice.
@Putrid Shittgenstein what's your point here? Men probably built the majority of the buildings in the country, it doesn't mean they had anything to do with their eventual uses. If you're going to attempt to do some sort of incel gotcha moment then at least make sure it actually makes sense.

If that community centre has land they can ask the council if they can use the land or part of it to grow vegetables for the use of those who use the centre . It can be done almost free, and seeds are not expensive. The brightest room in the building can be used in spring to start veg plants off near the windows. My only sympathy with the above commentator is: "How on the earth did the UK government create long-term policy that led to the poverty of people today in both material and spiritual and intellectual and social development of themselves?" The main stream media does not help by demonising people who look out for the interests of the "men of no property".
It really is worse in the UK that in other European countries. Nearly all governments put efforts in relieve packages during the first half of the year, that help the people to survive in this economy. I don't say it went perfect (I live in Germany and the relief package for heating cost took far too long ), but it does not compare to the news one gets from the UK where your government was far to wrapped up in their own scandals as well as still believing in the triple down effect as it seems.
If what you say were true, 99% of people would vote elsewhere and they wouldn't be in power. The concepts of Conservative and Labour have severely blurred edges and your views should be modified.
It’s very frustrating again and again to hear you work you’ve payed your way so it’s not your fault. Many do pet time Volunteering if they weren’t to do it that would cost money. I think it’s majorly important to make clear it’s not your fault if you can’t work physically or mentally or if your in work and struggling

I keep hearing about these astronomical energy bills and such. Can someone explain just how much we're talking about here? I'm sure here in the US I'm very fortunate. Have the electric bills gone up? Sure I guess but I've heard in the UK it's off the charts.
I was wondering the same thing. We are much more food and energy independent than Europe here, which helps a lot. Even though we are sharing our energy, I think it's still lower here? Great question, though.
I'm in the US also. From what I've read in comment sections for UK videos, energy costs have tripled and will increase again at the new year. Some of it comes into UK from France and France's power generation is down because reactors are off line. They are being hit on every side with petrol, heating oil, natural gas and electric. And the price of food on top.
I'm in the North of England; heating oil as an example went from just over 50p/litre to over £1/litre pretty much over night. I think its crept back down in value since the minimum delivery is 500L; I had to payout around £550 in one hit to get half a tank. That is a massive hit to the budget for a lot of people and unless you set up a prepay account some people may not be able afford that. Doesn't help the price is not fixed and fluctuates depending on demand.

My rent is £460 a month, council tax is £133 a month, I have very little left to buy food.
I am fortunate enough to get a little universal credit, £100 a month, that tops up my wages.
I ring the council several times a year to see if I can get a discount on council as it is a struggle paying the full amount but they always say 'no, I don't qualify, I earn a little too much, and they can only help people more vunrable ' anymore

It's not a crisis, it's a robbery. Calling it a crisis is like calling being robbed at gun point a crisis. Technically accurate, but doesn't tell you what is actually happening.
Well said.
Desmond Tutu: “Too frequently we think we have to do spectacular things. Yet if we remember that the sea is actually made up of drops of water and each drop counts, each one of us can do our little bit where we are. Those little bits can come together and almost overwhelm the world. Each one of us can be an oasis of peace.”

What's scary is she said the safety net was there for her but it's not there anymore for these families. What happened?
The Tories

I wish I had the extra in my budget to help.. I'm trying to keep my little family afloat after loosing my fiancee last year.
AMEN.
Absolutely
Its shocking that councils let their buildings go to rot. I have heard about this, ceilings leaking, and council refuses to fix it for YEARS. dont they know that if the problem is caught right away it stops further problems. but ignoring it only leads to the entire place eventually being condemned. Councils across the UK arent getting enough money from the govt to operate these buildings. and there isnt enough housing to put people in who are homeless. I dont see any solution really because they just arent building enough housing.
A lot of mold is also due to not heating or aerating the place. That's asking for mold infested homes.
On behalf of all those who need the help, Thank you for what you are doing

It certainly won't feed everyone but it would absolutely help. If nothing else they can grow potatoes. They're easy and cheap to grow, low maintenance , and can be cooked in a microwave.

@@melitajay Yes, this is another problem with the NHS or even "free" state education.
1. People don't take personal responsibility and then become obese or smoke and the burden is on the tax-payer.
2. Kids don't value the education because their parents don't pay every day at the school gates.
My only sympathy with the above commentator is: "How on the earth did the UK government create long-term policy that led to the poverty of people today in both material and spiritual and intellectual and social development of themselves?"
For the above reason I see almost zero merit in the UK Government and believe it is a system that needs overhauling and redeploying a system of goverance that works for people at the grass-roots/local level as much as possible thus destroying centralized power and it's poverty of success for people.

This is what happens when you vote for the Conservative Party. The party that represents 1 percent. This is what the people voted for. Shame! 😔
This is quiet common in politics. People often vote for the party whose interests are beyond what they are actually positioned in the spectrum of socioeconomics arrangements in society.
The main stream media does not help by demonising people who look out for the interests of the "men of no property".
There are those with long term disabilities those with crippling mental health that can’t get the support that can’t work it doesn’t mean this is there fault either. Many do pet time Volunteering if they weren’t to do it that would cost money. I think it’s majorly important to make clear it’s not your fault if you can’t work physically or mentally or if your in work and struggling
Unfortunately this is what happens when the British public believed the right wing press that the poor are scroungers and undeserving, Capitalism relies heavily on this human suffering you cant have the super rich without the super poor, disgusting state of affairs its structural violence.
Is the UK a “1st world” country, anymore?
It's all one world we live in.
