You're a great artist & teacher too. It is impossible to paint with a knife & colors the way you have demonstrated. It is the dexterity of your fingers that is needed to do this. You have generously shared that with us. As an old man, I wish you a long healthy life. Love.
Almost magical! I am familiar with painting acrylics with a palette knife but have never seen the knife used with watercolours before. Thank you for sharing your expertise. I will certainly give this a go.
OK, I gotcha! My last comment was a motivational one - think young - and I see you do!. Good to meet someone of my ilk. May the coming year be a really cheerful one and full of fun for us both. Blessings.
I loved the video...it is wonderful to see someone that experiments with technique and ends up creating something so very unique. This helps me a great deal, I don't believe there should be set-in-concrete rules in Art. I am currently writing lesson plans for my Art-Ed class and want to incorporate the painting knife as an optional tool for my students water-scape paintings which will be done with tempera paints. I am thinking of using the knife for textural purpose. Thank you for sharing! :)
Thanks. When I said "fingers" I meant the man behind the fingers, that's my dear you, with your skill & learning. When I said I am old I meant the years behind me. I am as energetic & active as you are, with all that I have learnt in life. Thanks again. wish you a happy NY. Love. 29 Dec 12
Mr. Clark just found you on you tube this week and so thrilled to find a place to learn and experiment with what you are teaching. I can't wait to use the knife with watercolors....also your color suggestions are most helpful. Thanks so much and Happy Spring 2013
Very cool! I am new to watercolour, am having an absolute ball with it, and I have tried working with a palette knife unsuccessfully. It's never occurred to me to apply paint to both sides, and the paint I've used has been too thick anyhow. Can't wait to try your tips- thank you for your generosity!
Wow... you're awesome. I was browsing Cheap Joes on line store and came across "watercolor knives" and I thought it was a typo error... Who would ever use a knife to watercolor??? so I came here and found you. Awesome techniques! Thank you for sharing.
Awesome! I'd never have thought to use a palette knife for actually painting stuff in watercolour. I do use one for scraping in watercolour, but I'll definitely need to give this a try. Thanks!
Great tips for using a knife with watercolours. I especially like the spattering technique. I always end up with several blobs when using a brush. Thank you so much for sharing.
Hi Fatima, if you follow the link in the video description you can follow our free watercolour painting classes - you won't be scared of watercolour after that :-)
Almost everything shown here can be done with a brush or stick too. The way I use the knife is to squeeze out a line of watercolor paint from the tube onto the edge of the knife and apply it just as you would with oil. The hit and miss effect is perfect for mountains. You can go back and create the bright and shadow side using other colors. In the demo shown, you could place leaves on the trees the same way.
+He Ray glad you enjoyed the video, the knife is a size 10, but each brand has it's own numbering system so the number is actually not of much use. So I will give you the blade length instead, which is 3" (8cm). Sadly the company that manufactured the knife I used in this video does not exist anymore :(
I have tried to do this with my coffee spoon and it worked well, it is only when I started to stir my tea cup with my painting knife that my wife asked for divorce... I since then use my brushes as I have found it served the best performance and to a miximum rendering effect.
@FreddyClapton not everything is Americanised. Cinema is still very much European, Middle Eastern etc. Just because you might watch Hollywood films doesn't mean everyone else does. Some people (not saying I am, just some people I know) are very much Anti-American culture and just stick to thier own culture. You shouldn't judge someone just because they are fed up with over Americanised stereotyped-customs.
@BlueShlemon Who did i judge?it seems that you're the one judging americans . I hear that alot from europeans. those same europeans dont realize that their cabinets are filled with american music and hollywoodflicks. America is cool and you know it.
@FreddyClapton I'm not saying I don't appreciate some of the things America has produced... but not EVERYTHING I like is because of America. Not everything I hear, watch or read is American. And I'm sure there are things you like which are British... only you don't realise it's British because America has changed it. You shouldn't be so patriotic to America, it may have some good things come out of it... but it also has a lot of flaws, just like any country.

Ingenious, and clever. I appreciate your sharing this so well by showing clearly how it is done. It was a great encouragement.

it gives watercolor such a sharp effect :)
It has nothing to do with the fingers per se, it is a skill that has to be learned like most things. BTW, if you think you're old - you're old :-)
Thank you for the demo. Really inspiring
Did you say “pre-oil or de-oil” knife???
