  • A group of orcas cruised around a jet ski off Kaikoura Peninsula, northeast of New Zealand’s South Island.
    David Lyons, who runs a surf school in Kaikoura, captured the beautiful show put on by the killer whales. Lyons said the playful animals were “totally surrounding us and playing with the wake and bubbles, freely swimming underneath and beside us and slapping their flukes with excitement.”

      tfro71 no, these specific whales *arent* used to swimming hundreds and hundreds of miles. They were born in captivity. Besides literally 3 whales, they were all born in captivity. And the three whales that weren’t born in captivity, haven’t been in the wild since 40+ years. And millions of gallons of water isn’t even comparable to the size of a 10x10x10 cube? stop embarrassing yourself.

    Under circumstances like this, has any scientist determined what a tail slap means? Is it a gentle warning for us to be aware/keep clear, or is it a nod to his pod that those pesky humans are around again. I’d love to know. By far my favourite creature of the sea. I love them so much.

    • @HitominekoFantasy
      @HitominekoFantasy ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Yes yes! So while orca clans have different body languages with different gestures, tails slapping is very common. It’s usually almost always the matriarch who does it and it appears to be a signal to the other whales to pay attention to her and listen to what she’s saying or signaling for them to do. Kinda like a teacher clapping to get the classes attention. In this video right here I believe it’s likely she’s trying to tell the little whale nearest to the jet to back off a little bit. Many people think it’s an indication that the whale is mad or frustrated but It is not an aggressive signal towards the humans.

    • @JC-vo5wz
      @JC-vo5wz ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They can communicate through language, if the Orca in charge felt the jetski as a threat you wouldn't see them this close. Very cool experience.

      @@JC-vo5wz Right. they know the drill. The jet ski operator knew to keep a steady direction as well so they got real close. Sometimes they'll come right up eyeball to eyeball with a swimmer. What magnificent creatures.

    Nice footage but I can't help but think how loud the engine is for these poor creatures, considering that they can hear sounds thousands of miles away. Humans are practically making them go deaf!

    Jet skis are the scourge of all whale species. I have seen the less responsible operators annoy pods endlessly.

    • @philgray1023
      @philgray1023 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Much less damaging than propeller strike and I've seen a few. You think ships and fast ferries slow down when running through humpback migrations, because they don't. Sonar and oil exploration studies are the scourge you don't see until the whales are on the beach.

    • @funnelvortex7722
      @funnelvortex7722 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jet skis and boats are a mere minor inconvenience to them. Sonar is the real issue, but they are trying to find ways to mitigate the effects.

      @@funnelvortex7722 ALL these things are problematic to Cetaceans, not ONE single thing is more important than the others, hitting them on the head with a hammer is probably a minor inconvenience too, but that doesn't mean you should do it. It's our interface with them in total, that needs addressing.

      there is no known orca attack of a human in the wild. i have seen a video of a man swimming with an orca in the wild. orcas actually seem to be playful with humans

    • @J0nFr0mAcc0untinG
      @J0nFr0mAcc0untinG 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      its play, theres a lot of orca intereacting with human videos and in most of them you will see this behaviour and even with them laying on their back and doing it. They do use the tail slap to fuck prey up as well though

      @@J0nFr0mAcc0untinG They also use it as a sign of aggression and a territorial act these a video of an Orca named J27 Blackberry using tail slapping towards boats that were in his space as like a sign to leave or stay away his sister J31 also reacted with a breach in the direction of the boat

    I watch alot of information on TH-cam and documentaries on these beautiful creatures. So curious. So playful.
    As much as I know these animals are the wolves of the sea. And it seems like they come out of no wear to save the lives of humans in harm's way...
    This is without a doubt my all time favorite animal on the planet.
    That being said I'd be scared on a jet ski. I'd feel like a bath toy. The tails are super strong. And that jet ski only ways so much. I wouldn't feel so scared on a boat.... Depending on the size of the boat. But the jet ski or a canoe... Forget it haha.
    Beautiful experience though. Truly.
    Watch out for the matriarch... That tail slap means business....

      Their intelligence allows them to tell human capabilities. They have no reason to pick fights with animals more capable than they are.

    • @fungames24
      @fungames24 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dasferd One possible reason could be curiosity. But the young killer whales don't even try. This suggests they have a culture, meaning the young were taught to not fight the humans.
