This show is a roller coaster ride. Top 3 Show ever made, maybe the best. The T.V. show trinity being Game of Thrones, The Sopranos, and Breaking Bad.

Skyler is very smart. A lot of people resent her for that because as you can see, it can be inconvenient to have a smart wife when you're trying to hide the fact you're cooking metamphetamine in your spare time from her but tbh all her reactions are that of what a normal person would have considering the circumstances. It's just that we're seeing things from Walter's perspective so people see her as an obstacle, but objectively speaking i don't think anyone can blame Skyler from being sus. If anything, I've always admired how sharp she was in picking up certain things.
edit: also, happy to see you're warming up to Jesse. He's such a great character. He'll steal yo heart, just you wait.

Absolutely! I never understood the Skyler hate. She's a pregnant woman whose husband has suddenly started acting extremely strange and secretive, who wouldn’t react like that?! I guess it's a testament to how well written the show is because it tricks us into rooting for Walt

People have learned narrative structure in storytelling, and especially visual storytelling very well and sometimes too well. 95 times out of a hundred the person who is the main focus is the "hero/heroine" and that person is on a journey, an arc. That journey will require besting obstacles in their path.
It is the false conflation of "hero/heroine" with protagonist and "villian" with antagonist. Two different concepts, but in many, most instances those concepts align so people get conditioned into thinking that the focus of the narrative (the protagonist) is the de facto hero/heroine and we are supposed to root for them to succeed and overcome obstacles like suspicious and concerned spouses.

The entire show can be considered a black comedy if you're twisted enough.
You've already discerned the main theme and stated it yourself: metamorphosis... also known as change. Walter laid it out plainly in his chemistry lesson in the first episode. The study of chemistry is the study of... change.
We are here to watch this mild-mannered under-achieving middle-aged teacher, husband, and father undergo some sort of change. And I don't believe I'm spoiling anything by pointing out that the title of the show pretty much spells out what sort of change we can probably expect.
Jesse was supposed to be a short term character, but the audience and writers loved him so much that he became a parallel protagonist, as much as a show like this has anything you can call a protagonist....
Protagonist just means main character btw not necessarily good or evil
For real though with 5 seasons of Breaking Bad, 6 seasons of Better Call Saul, and the El Camino movie, you might consider doing multiple episodes a week or it will take you over 2 years to get through them. It's a very popular franchise too, so your channel should do big numbers for it.
Most shows by the end have passed their peak and at best are trying to reach a dignified finale, this just keeps peaking, it's absurd.
The show gets better and better. Believe me! Jesse is my favorite I think but obviously Walt is incredible.
Jesse is my favorite fictional character of all time and my love for him only grew throughout the show. His character arc (and Walt's) is incredible.
James...you should consider watching two episodes at a time and reacting to both in one video. One episode per week is way to long
This episode is full of some really gruesome subject matter, and yet somehow they also made it hilarious. I think this is part of the genius of Breaking Bad. The show does get darker, but it has great humor. And the chemistry between the actors (no pun intended) is pure magic.
The show consistently makes you think it's created the threshold for tension and then the writers are like 'nah' and shatter that threshold. Hard to talk any further about this show where you're at now but man... It changed the game.

3:28 - Man, you are so in tune with this show, the writing, the themes, the acting.....you are the PERFECT reactor for this show. You had me cracking up on this one! The stuff with Skylar hearing Jesse's answering machine and checking his website out is freaking hilarious. So is Walt smoking weed, and Jesse's responses to it! And then Skylar going to Jesse's place. This may even be my favorite episode of the first season, now that I think about it. I'm going to start hitting this one on other channels! Thanks, James!
The only thing I can complain about in the whole series is that it ends. I can't understate how good this show, the characters and their arc's are. There is no better television or movie I could recommend.
I get what you're saying but that's actually the best part, they knew exactly when to end it without dragging it out to the point where it got stale
Another interesting thing about this show is that they pretty much hired regular tv actors, and let them act the hell out of this show. You will see some oscar level acting, from guys who were often just typecast their entire career as "generic swat team leader", or a "gruff one-note detective". Quite a few people got a chance to deliver a career defining performance, in the span of this francise.

That climb down out of my ass line is where you start seeing the real Walter White, imo. Dude is extremely smart, knows it, and has major issues with the hand life has dealt him.

Anthony Hopkins was laid up at his home. So to pass the time, he started watching B.B. to pass the time. He was so captivated by it, he watched the entire series in 2 weeks. Afterwards, he wrote a hand written letter to Bryan Cranston praising him and telling him that the character of Walter White was the greatest character he ever saw in movie/TV history. The transformation from plain h.s. chemistry teacher to who we see at the end of the series is going to blow your mind.
I believe I've heard that Bryan Cranston loved the naked/underwear scenes. He liked to try the other actors laugh at him.
It's so refreshing to see you siding with Skyler; She's played to be annoying and overbearing but she's totally right.
Breaking Bad has great comedic moments sprinkled throughout the earlier seasons. I forgot how funny this show was tbh

I think the overarching theme can probably be summed up in Walter's description of Chemistry to his students. The study of change. Watching the actions and reactions that cause him to change.
Breaking Bad is such an awesome show, you're in for a roller coaster ride man. One of the best shows ever made, period.
People give Skylar a lot of shit or say she's annoying or they hate her, but honestly she's one of the only sane people on the entire show. The amount of lying and gaslighting and victim blaming Walter does...well, you'll see as the show goes on, but even from just this episode, she's totally in the right and her reaction is how most normal people would react. It really is an incredible tale of how pride and ego can lead a good person down a very, very bad road. Hope you enjoy.

You've already touched on the main theme which is 'change and transformation'. Many analogies are made in this regard when it comes to who Walt becomes and the 'physical changes that are involved with his field of profession, Chemistry.

Everybody, TRY not to talk about the show in light of things you know are coming. Try to focus on what he's already seen.
If you don't know where the show is going and you're speculating, that's different.
The first season was cut short at seven episodes due to a writers strike. The finale was early in season 2. Enjoyed your review. It will be interesting to see what you think the theme is.
So excited to see certain moments in this series, and hopefully you make it to bcs, both shows are great in their own ways but I think bcs excels in many of the areas that I didn’t even know I wanted breaking bad to go into
I’m excited to tap in finally!
I recently did a re-watch of BCS because of the new season and the thing that really stuck out the directing, editing, and cinematography was top tier from episode one and could tell they were a well oiled machine when that show started. All those aspects are great in Breaking Bad but you could tell the film making quality was top tier in the last season compared to the first where it was still great but were still experimenting with different things.
Gotta love the comedic tone in these first episodes.
Jesse Pinkman is easily my favorite character of the show. From his comedy to his depth and overall dynamics. Their evolution both Walt and Jesse was amazing to watch.

:25 All I can say about where this journey goes is enjoy these little early episodes.....these early seasons.....soak it all in because they are all going to be a distant memory by the time you get to the end! And yet it all connects, every detail is important! It all leads up to the last half of the last season. Ten million things happen before we get there. But I can absolutely promise you that you're not just going to be just strung along! I hardly ever watch entire Breaking Bad reactions, only certain episodes, all in future seasons. But I'm going to be on the entire ride with James Vs. Cinema!

Hydrofluoric acid is nasty, horrible stuff. I was amazed when I found it in concrete rust remover that I bought once (in low concentration, but still kinda dangerous!)
It's the kinda acid you don't want to get on your skin, even fumes at a high enough concentration. I mean many other common acids like sulfuric and hydrochloric don't eat bone and skin like HF does. The other acid may burn if not washed off with soap and water, HF on the skin can result in limb amputation to prevent sepsis or worse. HF absolutely loves (or hates) calcium because of it's florine makeup being so similar to calcium, which is why it can so quickly take your limbs out.
If you were dissolving a body in HF, you want full body skin covering, sealed up with tape, and a very good and well fitted respirator. The concentration they're using would absolutely F you up if splatter hit you.

The universal theme of Breaking Bad, is in my opinion "survival".
It boggles my mind hearing that originally Jesse was going to be killed off before the end of season 1, and then Vince Gilligan changed his mind and kept him around.

Oh um funny behind the scenes thing is Bryan Cranston actually learned how to make meth from the cop and chemistry consultants. They taught basically all the main "cookers" in the show how to actually make pure product. Then the writers and directors pulled out most of the dangerous stuff so some would be criminals wouldn't get any funny ideas about using Breaking Bad as a template for not savory transactions.

It appears BB has hooked it's fish (James), now it's just a matter of reeling him in.
One of the few nitpicks I have with the show is how that guy, the drug dealer, can walk around in that neighborhood in the state that he was in, get picked up by Walter like he was, and NO ONE seen anything? Yeah, a little hard to believe that.
I know your probably getting tired of hearing this...... but I cannot wait to see your reactions to some of the moments. I think everyone is excited because we know you're the type of person to truly appreciate the shows greatness!!

Myth busters did a Breaking Bad special where they addressed a lot of sciency stuff from the show and... the acid bath was debunked. As a matter of fact, they identified a type of acid that would do the job but for safety reasons (and not wanting to give anyone ideas) they didn't name it.
If you're interested in adding Science Fiction tv shows to your line up (if you haven't seen them already): Stargate SG1 and Farscape!
Bruuuuuh SG1 and Farscape were my bread and butter growing up! Farscape mostly due to my mom at that time. But SG1 was one I personally liked. I was so stoked seeing Christopher Judge( I think I spelled it right) have a new explosion in his career with Kratos somewhat recently too.
It's possible that this was intentional by the show's writers. I know that they were careful about what they said and did onscreen about how to make meth so that people couldn't use the show as a tutorial.
@@kareningram6093 I question that as the show got a few things fundamentally wrong about how chemistry works in some parts so I would lean to more just an oversight or lack of knowledge.
@@nobodyyouknow6998 Some of it was exaggerated or changed for dramatic purposes, but they worked pretty hard to be accurate according to the NPR article "The Science Behind 'Breaking Bad'" dated Dec. 23, 2011. It features organic chemistry professor Donna Nelson, who was also a science advisor on the show.
@@kareningram6093 There is a great deal of chemistry in the show though that is "inorganic chemistry" and I want to be clear that it's not bad per se or that it makes the show bad that things were overlooked. Chemistry is a thing of many fields. The cost of specializing in something is you become better at one thing but a bit worse in other things. Organic chemistry is essentially all things Carbon related mostly where as inorganic is... well everything else loosely lol.
Now with my having said this I would like to say I fully agree that they VERY probably changed intentionally a very great deal. For reasons such as Meth is actually not super difficult to make if I recall correctly lol.
