Skyler is selfish tbh. She's also caring at some points, but since I'm just starting I have to see how her character changes after the pregnancy. Thus far she has been very dismissive as a partner to Walt, with seemingly good intentions.
It's funny that you would mention Hank being so much like a caricature. Dean Norris, who plays hank, actually auditioned for Breaking Bad under the impression that it was going to be a dark comedy, so he added a comedic effect to his character. The casting director liked it and decided to keep his character that way.
Same. Ive heard other people tell me they didn’t like the first season, or that it “didn’t get good” until later, and i can’t understand that. The plate scene is fking incredible, and made me realize that this wasnt just another TV show.
In my eyes Aaron Paul and Bryan Cranston can do no wrong. This show get thrown around as a "drama", which is true but the comedy is really good. It's an aspect of this show that more people should mention when recommending it.
I think it is because BB progressively lost its humor as the seasons rolled out. Especially between season 1 and 2. Of course there where comedic moments sprinkled here and there. But season one had much more of a dark comedy aspect that was dropped off in the subsequent seasons.
Hank definitely does start out like a bit of a pastiche of your typically brash TV cop (and visually he's essentially just Vic Mackey from the Shield) but like everything in this show, he contains multitudes.
The Cinematography. The Music. The Acting. The Directing and Editing. I love how you pick up on all of that. And also the story! James you're a Super Multi-Tasker of noticing things
This is going to be so awesome watching your reactions week to week. The further you get along the more interested I am in what you think about this show. I wish I could watch this show again for the first time. The camera angles never cease to amaze me.
@@JamesVSCinema Its hard for me to think of a more complete series, it just has everything, can't wait for this ride glad you decided to do the reactions for us.
Great reaction yet again. I usually only watch reactions to certain episodes but I'm on the bus for every one of your reactions for this series. I'm so happy you're enjoying the ride. As we're constantly saying: if you like this, you're going to REALLY like what's coming up, season after season. But I am RELISHING every one of these early episodes with you. THANKS, JAMES!!!! You host a good party! :D
your commentary on hank is so fucking funny. i love your infatuation with him, because with no spoilers of course... hes quite possibly my favorite character in the show besides jesse. great commentary as usual bro!!
hank is prob my favorite character in this series, he's kinda ,sorta, the comedic relief of the series but that doesnt stop his character from development and being well writen so that it fits perfectly with the story and thus feeling more human and relatable, I often "see" this character in close family members like uncles when we are children, that we see that caring loving and goofy person but he has an entire life with work and serious responsabilities and issues that we never see until we are older. I'm sorry that was a hell of a paragraph I love this show lmao
Bro everytime you upload one of these im gonna be hype. Not too many series got me like that but breaking bad has such an innate ability to produce such real emotion, and that emotion coming from such a down to earth dude like you?? Perfect combo, its always gonna be hype clicking on one of these.
I gotta say you are in for a real treat regarding the cinematography. Breaking Bad (and even more so Better Call Saul) revolutionized television cinematography. My favorite moments are the show's regular use of object perspective (such as shooting the liquid Emilio cleanup from underneath the floor). There are also breathtaking wide shots that your typical TV show would never bother to setup.
This show is the best thing to ever come to television. I can’t wait to see you go through this journey with Mr. White. Probably one of my favorite episodes is called “Fly”
Technically it's the second person Walter has killed The first one was in self-defense with the mustard gas from episode 1 But that's very different than killing a prisoner I remember not being quite on board with the show at this point but that scene with Walter digging the plate out of the trash really cemented to me this was to be a very unique show
I like your reactions to this show, and how you enjoy the technical aspects of the scenes. The character development in the entire show is amazing, and you will enjoy the ride for sure. This is that rare TV show that is great from the first episode to the last.

Right a lot of people hated Skylar. When she was just a normal wife. And mother. We were lead to see things from Walt’s side. Because of you I’m considering going back and rewatching this show since I never finished it. I watched it religiously for the first few seasons but after that I fell off with it. Man, I just finished Better Call Saul and good god I can't wait to rewatch Breaking Bad with you for the 20th time. The cinematography in this show is insane and only gets better, can't wait for you to see it all.
Loved your analysis at the end. I think you already pinpointed how this is written as character driven drama. Chaos and unpredictable circumstances with deep motives
You should give Mr. Robot a try. It's a great show with interesting storytelling and fantastic next level cinematography. Story planned and thought through from ep1 season 1 to the last ep in season 4. You will enjoy it a ton :) Tv show in top 3 for me for sure.
the thing is, the only reason Walt thinks that this is a completely impossible choice between two options... is that he never considered just literally turning himself in to the police, and thus ensuring some protection for his family at the cost of his own freedom. He wouldn't even need to let the guy go first, so there would be zero actual danger. It makes total sense that the character wouldn't do this, but it's the very first point where in retrospect, you understand he always had a way out and only his own pride kept him going down this path.
In hindsight, while I'm watching your reactions, I've come to realize that season one of Breaking Bad was kind of a slow burn. Things don't really start to pick up until later. I think I didn't notice this the first time I watched it because it's never boring. It doesn't feel wasted. It grips your attention the whole, entire time, even when it's just character development or Walt and Jesse bitching at each other over dumb stuff. Man, I can't wait to see you get to the REALLY crazy stuff. You are going to lose your mind.
Yeh it’s exciting but walt doesn’t truly become the walt we know until he says wanna cook to Jesse in episode 5. This is the episode he denies easier options and chooses to pursue cooking meth despite the drama of the first 3 episodes
So few shows truly rate as "great". Of that elite group, this is one sits alone at the top for me. Other shows have shown as brightly for a season or more, but this is the one that I can look back on as a completed work where the whole exceeds a sum of outstanding parts.
Yeah, he did keep one of the pieces from the broken plate, but that doesn't make him necessarily any more or less evil. The man has been kidnapped, and legally under the circumstances is ALLOWED to use any and all means to escape, even if that were to include the bloody killing of a Chemistry professor. What a dilemma.
I can feel something brewing underneath the layers..

Walter's first body? Nah, that's his second kill. Remember the other drug dealer he killed with chemicals?
Yeah, he did keep one of the pieces from the broken plate, but that doesn't make him necessarily any more or less evil. The man has been kidnapped, and legally under the circumstances is ALLOWED to use any and all means to escape, even if that were to include the bloody killing of a Chemistry professor. What a dilemma.
Jessy is such an incredible Actor. His developmend and acting in this show is superb! And he even didn`t have 1 hour actor training at all
Oh, it's just getting started. Wait until you meet Tuco and see Walter's full transformation; which is the key to this captivating series.
technically Crazy 8 is Walt's second body. Emilio is entirely his fault too. But this is the first one he's made a conscious life or death decision on
I cannot wait for your thoughts on Skylar and Walts character arcs as thr show goes on! I hated Skylar when I first watched the show
6:53 Hank is Hank.
I always thought Walt was so mean to Jesse, always way meaner to Jesse than Jesse was to him.
me like: oh damn james isn't standing up for this reaction wtf XD
8:40 Yo, yo! Is that Kim Sexler!!?!
James- Walter got his first body...
Walter- Hold my beer....

“Oh well Hell Hitler bitch” legendary Jesse quote lol
