The name "Unakoti" means "one less than a crore" in Sanskrit, and it is a reference to the countless rock carvings and sculptures found at the site. Unakoti is renowned for its ancient rock-cut images and sculptures of Hindu deities and other figures.

Rock-Cut Images: Unakoti is known for its massive rock-cut images and sculptures that date back to the 7th to 9th centuries. The site is home to various carvings of Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, Lord Ganesha, and other deities. The central attraction is a 30-foot-tall image of Lord Shiva's head, known as "Unakotiswara Kal Bhairava."
Legends: Unakoti is steeped in Hindu mythology and legends. According to one story, Lord Shiva and a group of gods were traveling to Kashi (Varanasi). Lord Shiva instructed them to wake up before sunrise and continue their journey, but they overslept. As a result, Lord Shiva, in a state of anger, left the group, and they all turned into stone. It is believed that these stone carvings are the gods and goddesses who accompanied Lord Shiva on his journey.
Festivals: Unakoti is an important pilgrimage site and is particularly significant during the Ashokastami Mela, a major festival celebrated in April. Thousands of devotees visit the site during this time to pay their respects and participate in the festivities.
Archaeological Site: Unakoti is recognized as an archaeological site of national importance by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Efforts have been made to preserve and protect the ancient rock carvings and sculptures.

Please visit places where Indigenous people lives , like jampui, vangmun tripuras cleanest village,- activities-paragliding ,(the place similar to mizoram since you left dharmanagr so you have to comeback to dharmanagr or pecharthal station or panisagar station to get to jampui) you can also visit MONTANG VALLEY thats may be 1hr or 2hr journey from agartala, you can also visit UJJAYANTA PALACE (KING OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLE OF TRIPURA) MATA BARI, BAAS GRAM(BAMBOO VILLAGE)

The maker of these idols was Kallu gurjar. He was a devotee of Parvati and wanted to accompany Shiva-Parvati to their abode on Mount Kailash. On Parvati's insistence, Shiva agreed to take Kallu to Kailash, but for this a condition was kept that he would have to make one crore idols of Shiva in one night. Kallu got involved in this work like a man of his tune. But when dawn broke, the idols turned out to be one less than one crore. Adamant on getting rid of this trouble named Kallu, Shiva left Kallu the potter with his idols in Unakoti, making this an excuse and kept on walking.[10]
