    Should’ve put the sleepers on the inside of the posts otherwise you just have a few screws holding back the soil! Also need internal bracing to hold it all vertical!! Good effort though guys love the enthusiasm and progress.

    no matter how good the wood is, it will eventually decay and your wall will collapse, wall should have been done using concrete , I love your team spirit though, it is so nice to see everybody working, I am allways on my own in such projects

      Thanks Mark, i guess all good things have to come to an end at some point, and nothing lasts forever! We’ll be adding some extra supports to the front of the sleepers to make sure it really lasts as long as possible. We do have a fantastic team of friends who come and help, we’re very lucky to keep such a great vibe on site 😅🙌🏻

      Don't listen to the above. I have a sleeper retaining wall, been up 12 years now and still going strong, good point is you face drilled them so if you had to swap them out in the future it's an easy job for you and you were smart enoigh to put plastic at the vack for extra longevity. You will find the bottom will rott quicker than the top so you can change them as and when bit isnt more than a 30min job. Concrete looks ugly so you defo made the right choice.

    You should do sleepers with patio slabs in the middle and get a aurger to make it easier to dig the holes

    The suggestion would be to use vertical rsj's, put in the french drainage below to allow, reducing the weight allowing water run off to area below.

    I have found sleeper steps more slippery than slabs and needing anti fungal cleaning a couple times a year, in spite of which still tend to be slippy when wet, but they do look lovely xx well done you grafters 😅

    • @NickyandHarri
      @NickyandHarri  ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      We do love the natural wood look, hence why we built the wall out of sleepers instead of brick like the front! 😅

    Fab video again. My experience of sleepers is they will very quickly rot and your retaining wall will slide. There are several TH-camrs in the landscaping game who dip the posts in treatment and the taper the mortar to prevent the posts from rotting! great to see you using DPM behind the sleepers to stop the constant submersion of water....remember the weather we have in the UK is not great :)

    I know that feeling of a digger costing too much. A big mess and all the dirt. Doing lots of hard work in horrible weather, feeling worn out and being hit with problem after problem as though you are not getting anywhere. I'd say the ground works stage is as worse as it gets and as you build up it gets better and better and the work you do each each day becomes more and more rewarding especially when you get on to doing joinery/carpentry. I have been there and done it and I am now in my new next house watching your videos psyching myself up for the biggest build I will attempt on my own which is a wrap around extension to double the size of my house and landscape a 200 sqm driveway all for a target of £100k.

    If you're concerned about the frost/snow/rain it's pretty cheap to buy old scaffolding tubes to make a basic frame around & above your foundations then just cover with tarpaulin, it won't be water proof but it will make a massive difference in helping keep the worst of the weather off so laying can take place. Hope you enjoy your holiday!

As always a great video & whilst I understand your frustration at not being able to start your bricklaying you should still be very proud of yourselves as your still making incredible progress! I personally think I would go with stone steps as better in wet/cold weather less slippery & maybe more durable but wooden would be equally as lovely aesthetically so I would definitely approach it from the practicalities. Hope you have fun skiing & I look forward to next week’s video. ❤❤

    Lads cutting out stumps you need to cut around the stump with a reciprocating saw, it makes it so easier, i took out 27 bush stumps some small some quite big, dig around and get that long blade in, it is quick and you get the big ones out good luck, Mine was to get through all the land to get the footings in on a Friends Conservatory

Only one thing I noticed get a spirit back on your retaining walls, not sure if it was just in the editing but when you were back filling them, they defo looked to have shifted a good bit, and last thing you want is them to continue to lean forward and then collapse. Best of luck guys it gets easier as the weather improves trust me!!!

    In case you didn't know there are interlocking retaining bricks you can purchase that don't require cement I done mine with Marshalls interlocking pavers (Croft stone), but you can only go 1m high.
    I opted for interlocking because you don't need to worry about drainage, the gaps between the bricks naturally let the water flow out and it's cheaper than sleepers

    Sleeper steps will get slippery, it looks like your garden doesn't get much light in winter making the problem worse.
    You could go down the route of framing the steps in sleepers and filling with ballast, cementing slabs down to make the steps. This way you have sleepers as risers and slabs as steps and maintaining the look.
    I would also consider putting some sort of capping on the top of your sleeper wall to help protect against the weather a little, always remember your walls are only as good as the hat you put on them.

    • @NickyandHarri
      @NickyandHarri  ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +1

      “Beavers only build dams when they need to in order to retain and manage water levels. If rivers are more than 10m wide beavers will build tunnels and burrows rather than dams. These tunnels can extend up to 20 metres (average less than 5m) into the bank to avoid flooding.” - they definitely do dig holes!

    • @robertfuller9128
      @robertfuller9128 2 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      @@NickyandHarriI would do so. They'll add lots of extra strength as over time those sleepers will move as the screws loosen. They'll also add some design features rather than a big flat fronted wall, so you can add in lights etc into the alcoves between the posts. Please don't do sleeper steps, they'll rot and get so slippery. I would use the same slabs as the patio for steps.
