This is incredible! Thanks so much for taking the time to document this for all of us! So appreciative of it, especially knowing how much time this stuff takes as it is!
Great video. I encourage you to continue. By not using the factory speaker wires you disabled the center dual voice coil speaker in the middle of the dash. You can use the factory wires if your tweeters have crossovers built into them but then you have to get to the center speaker and disconnect it. I didnt know the sprinters had a small dual voice coil speaker in the center of the dash until I found it to be the source of the awful rattle when the radio was turned up even after new stereo and speakers were installed.
Correct, the component speakers I bought replace the door midrange speakers and upper tweeters and include a crossover. I did remove the center voice coil and never looked back. Some people are concerned about Bluetooth call clarity but I have to say both music and calls sound much better now.
Thanks for the tutorial. Especially the identification of the positives on each side. Also, I would never found those two bolts behind the grab handle. They were very sneaky. I put a new Pioneer 9 inch floating screen in and identified a problem with the driver's side speaker. Took it out to find the cone separating at the edge. Now fixed with new Pioneer component speakers. Keep up the good work.
Oh man! Could have used this video a few weeks ago having just struggled through my own upgrade. 24:00 minutes says it all. The 6.5" kappa Perfect set I bought were anything but. Wish I had gone the Hertz route. Wonderful video. Subscriber earned.
Thanks TJ! I've been so impressed with how the system sounds that I never bothered to install the subwoofer that I pre-wired for. Welcome to the channel!
Great, concise, thorough instructions. Thanks for saving me so much time researching, and for the links to those adapters I maybe never would have found otherwise.
When you have all the door trims off, it is a good idea to put some sound deadening on the inside of the door skin. That is cheap and can make such a difference to sound and overall sound level as well.
Julian Webb That Mercedes 'insulation ' is a joke . I had one on my '08 and when was ordering '14 just opted out , just like many others , who already had it . I did 5x better with some other stuff
Thanks so much for the video! I followed your directions and all went well. I probably wouldn't have done this without your help. Sounds great. Next will be the Espar heater install and the Alpine amp with 2 rear speakers.
Wow, glad I found you. I'd love to upgrade both the head unit and the speakers in our 2015 sprinter. When I am ready to do it, I'll come back to this video. Thank you!
@@ourkaravanis it possible to just upgrade the speakers and leave the factory headset as is? My Sprinter has a blown speaker and I just want to replace both sides with a better quality for now.
You don't need to cut the stock harnrs6 the door speaker. Just add the crossover somewhere in between the head unit and speaker or amp and the speaker of you installed one. In just did the third system in my 2019 sprinter. I kept the factory wiring for the door speakers, I actually got the door fishers out and kept the mounting bracket and used it with the new speakers and just plugged in the wires. Also took out the middle speaker.
Excellent video however I ordered the rings as you suggested and the size 5.625, I bought the exact same speakers, Had to return the rings they were to small. If you buy these speakers you need to order the 5.75ID adapter. Straight from the folks at DYIvan who make the rings. Again excellent walk through just need to update that little point.
Thank you, I appreciate that information. I definitely used the 5.625 so something must have changed, but based on this I will update the information and links for the 5.75" adapter. Sorry for the trouble and again, thank you, this helps everyone. -Ken
Isn't there already separation filter on the original audio installation as there are door speaker and a tweeter? Why not to use it? If installing new filter I might put it inside dash and use existing wires. Much less work.
Might have to watch this video 15x to absorb it all and understand the terms (e.g. "add some wiring because it's not long enough to reach the crossover" - the what now? lol) but thank you for making it. Definitely need to upgrade the cab audio and will go with this approach!
Dude... you are like 2 months ahead of me with your build. I was thinking about the speaker upgrades today! Thanks to you, (and Dave Orton) I just finished my first piece of 80/20 furniture and have a much clearer path forward. I'll be ordering some stuff through your links in the near future. Thanks so much and keep up the good work!
It's not completely finished yet, but all the framing is done. I've got to put some riv nuts into my siding and place it in the van yet... that's on the agenda for tomorrow. I've got a 144wb passenger where I'm putting a bed width wise in the back. The bed will be at window level to create maximum space... so underneath, on either side of the bed are going some "garage lockers" made from the 89/20. They feel bombproof so far... anxious to see how well they attach with the rivnuts. I'll try to show you some pics in the light tomorrow!
Thank you for your video. My English isn't perfect so I'm having a bit of trouble understanding some of the details. I personally installed JBL Club (cheaper) on my Sprinter (2007) but apparently it's a bridge system because I could connect the wires in the order I wanted without any auditive difference? On the other hand, the sound is far from perfect and I'm limited by the small baffles that break the ears and saturate as soon as I turn the sound up too loud. I didn't have a small box like you with my new JBL speakers. Do the wires make sense? I have the same voltage on each one. Thanks :)
Kenetube-Before I order a set of speakers thru your link, I have a question. I have a Kenwood DDX9905S, if I understand correctly, I disconnect the tweeters in the dash and do not use those wires at all? Basically splitting the signal from the door speaker back to the tweeter with the crossover. Does eliminating the two outputs from the head unit hurt the sound? Thanks for such a great Sprinter channel
The factory tweeters are wired to the door speakers, I believe. I didn’t see any evidence of a crossover but there is a small capacitor (or something) that probably functions as a low cost way to filter out some of the lower tones.
Hello! Could you clarify what you did with "tube" part between the plastic speaker grill on the door and the speaker itself? Did you trim the tube so the speaker would fit or was the diameter of the speaker small enough to fit inside the tube? Thanks!
Really incredible work with clear and easy to understand instructions (I need that). Thanks so much for doing this! I have a bunch of things in my cart from Amazon and eBay, (thx for the guide) but before I check out I wanted to ask about a subwoofer. Did you put one in? I didn't see it anywhere so I wanted to check in. Thanks, John
Thank you John! I did pre-wire for a subwoofer, but the system sounds better than I was thinking it would and thus never did install one. As is, the system is good enough 95% of the time, and the other 5% I think about adding the sub for that extra level of awesomeness. Good luck and enjoy the tunes!
Nice video. Is there enough room in this door to install 8 inch mids in the door? I prefer a bit more mid bass hit. I know I would have to trim the metal but just curious how much room there is behind the speaker and beside it? I would also install my tweeter near the door handle so it’s not bouncing off the windshield
Hey matey, great video! Thanks for your efforts. I just bought component speakers with out the bass and tweeter separater. Does that mean I can just use the factory wiring for the tweeter and not retun a wire to the woofer?
That's correct. The crossover keeps the highs from going to the woofers and the lows from the going to the tweeters. If you don't use one you can use the factory wiring, as that's how it's setup from the factory. Thanks for watching!

The crossover separates the frequencies so woofers only receive lower frequencies and tweeters only receive higher frequencies. It will prevent distortion and create a cleaner sound.
