To quote the late Michael Brecker, "I'm not the master of the saxophone, George Garzone is"

The pianist absolutely failed. he over-comped everything and didn't listen at all. He overplayed over the strings making the whole thing sound off. he was and is clueless. Didn't use his ears or brain at all. Ruined the whole concert for me, had to turn it off.

shaka zulu Leo was hand picked by George because of his playing ability and his playing style which is both on display here. Leo plays for Esperanza Spalding which has won multiple Grammys over the years. I think calling him a loser because you don't hear what others hear is a stretch but everyone's entitled to their own opinion.

I don't think he absolutely failed, but I do believe he was a good bit too busy and basic.

Yes indeed, Garzone fired him after this show. Now he works as an accountant in Venado Tuerto

Id say its actually you who is over-comp (ensating).. the pianist seems to be enjoying himself.. relaxed and competent..and hence the listeners ..Im commenting on the 1st tune.. (as I havent viewed the rest yet).. matters of taste are just that... if one fits in.. in such a natural way.. is that not what Jazz is about ? that whole scene sounds lovely to me.. but I guess its "all about you" ?
