Dr. Riddick Demonstrates How to Make Duct Tape Boot for Horse Hoof

A duct tape boot is often used to cover a horse’s foot that has a sole abscess, bruise or wound to the sole. At times, a vet or farrier might create a hole in the sole to promote drainage of an abscess. A bandage is applied to keep the sole clean and dry, and possibly maintain contact between the wound and an antiseptic or poultice. How long the hoof should be bandaged depends on a number of factors and should be determined by your vet. There are a variety of commercial hoof covers and boots that are durable and convenient, but costly. Being able to construct a foot bandage out of duct tape is a valuable and simple skill. This is great. I've never seen this before and it looks like it will hold up as well as anything you would purchase for a lot more money. Thank you for posting this one as I will be using this method from now on instead of the wrapping the tape around the hoof. I can see this being so very useful for several applications from as abscess to a cracked hoof. Thanks again.

If you cut it with the sticky side up, it works a lot better... rather than fighting with the tape stuck to the table.

I tried this today. The overlapping made it so stiff it wouldn't bend around the hoof, and because it had already been stuck to something, it wasn't sticky enough to adhere on the hoof. What a bust. Had to start completely over and do it the way we've done them before.

How about turning to non stick side when cutting lol.

After lesning how to do this with shot cast I will never use this method again (unless something needs daily changing)

Can putting the tape on the hooves to go on a trail ride provide some protection?
