Her albums were under-performing due to personal life issues at the time. Rapping would have come across as a gimmick or stunt and would not have been taken seriously. Yes and so many gospel artists especially Mary Mary were influenced by it. Especially since Erica Campbell used to sing backgrounds for Brandy and was in the studio when Brandy had some of her studio sessions when she recorded her Full Moon album.
My goodness, i think my favorite thing about this particular show she put on is all of the different textures in her voice and the intentionality of accessing each one. She's truly an interpretive vocalist, the way she tells the story. You never know how she's going to approach a song, although her signature and what she's known for is forever present of course. She changes the texture of her tone from airy/breathy to raspy to clear to smokey to gritty to smooth...I could go on and on. Not to mention what she is doing with her background vocals. She puts so much into her music that I never hear it the same way twice.
When listening to Brandy it’s hard to stop because of all of the vocal ark arrangements she does you don’t want to stop it. But when studying is the exact opposite because all your doing is stopping and rewinding to her all the arrangements that she is doing. It’s beautiful. I have been trying to dissect Borderline to try to figure out how in the world she put it all together. Both Brandy's lead vocals and the band were live and following the backing track. How did she maintain the tempo when she pre-recorded the backing track? How do you even rehearse something like this? Every last detail that was put in this song had to be succinct for everything to line up. It was like putting a 1000 piece puzzle together! The ebb and flow between all the parts is so innovative! I know I have never heard anything like it.
