One question - do we really (collectively) think Love Story is better (at least story telling wise) than Mary's Song? Because I have to strongly disagree. Mary's song paints a whole movie for me and the feeling I get is just way more powerful. And all the technical stuff like the choruses changes etc. I feel like are on the same level.

For real!! I was so glad to see Mary’s Song on the list like that pops into mind automatically when storytelling is concerned - in some ways it felt like her first foray into storytelling + progression in a single song
17:10 and, in my mind, Midnight Rain could be (in some multiverse 😆) about 80 years old Dorothea reflecting about "the life she gave away", about her town being "a wasteland, full of cages, full of fences, pageant queens and big pretenders" ("pageant schemes" are mentioned in dorothea). She became a huge actress and her movies are played over and over again on tv (even now that she's 80 years old) so "he never thinks of her except for when she's on TV".
Yes! As soon as I heard Midnight Rain (my favorite song on Midnights) I immediately connected it to Tis the Damn Season/Dorothea. It's the same story carried forward and looked back on. (Though I didn't see it being carried that far forward. You can be a lot younger than 80 and still have memories and regrets.)

No bait and switch, just heartbreaking honesty. It is in my top 10 of all time as well… I was on that live stream weeping and I tear up every time I watch it (I’m tearing up now listening to you share your thoughts) thank you, Bonny.
HOW has no one brought up Tim McGraw?! Obviously it's a simple, sweet story but such strong imagery, a full progression - the first verse describes the relationship, the second verse describes their separation after the summer is over, and we learn there's a letter in a box under her bed; then in the bridge she's back on his street, delivering him the letter.... and then the twist is that the letter is what we've been hearing in the chorus throughout the song, it's her reminding him of their story. We even get a glimpse into the future with "someday you'll turn your radio on..." SO GOOD. So that's my honorable mention :) Anyways this is a superiorrrr video I love the evermore representation
I've always interpreted the "from sprinkle splashes to fire ashes" verse in YOYOK as a way to say "in the course of her enitre career". This meaning from the very first song of her very first album (Tim McGraw) to the last song of her latest album (at the time she wrote the song) being Evermore. In Tim McGraw she writes "I was right there beside him all summer long" (summer = sprinke splashes) while in Evermore she sings "Writing letters addressed to the fire" (fire ashes). This in my opinion makes the storytelling even more brilliant!! Thank you so much for the content you bring to this platform, as an analytical swiftie myself I really really enjoy it!! ♡

My nana passed away 2 days ago, leaving her husband's (and greatest love of her life) heart broken and just hearing about Timeless and Mary´s song (that´s actually her name too🥺) destroyed me one more time. Even with your disclaimer about trying not to repeat much…I am SOOO shocked to not see Ivy on this list. Such vivid imagery, I can picture every second of this on a screen in front of me when I listen and how the story plays out
All Too Well (actually 5 min version specifically) is the pinnacle of storytelling in every way possible: lyrically, the build in production and emotion, climax to slowing down and then building back up again. It’s so perfect and all works together to tell a complete journey. I don’t know how she does it. Also, it’s so fucked up how each chorus closes with the same kind of line with different lyrics, wind in my hair, down the stairs, running scared, it was rare I remember it all too well, because those lines to me are like a one sentence summary of the entire verse and chorus that preceded it. So then when she brings each of those lines back at the end of the song, she’s really recalling/summarizing the entire song back at the end, if you think of those lines as summaries of the verses and choruses.
THISSSSS! To me atw5 has just the perfect amount of detail to tell her story but let everyone paint the scene, while atw10 paints the whole scene on its own. Both slap tho.
Love Evermore (the song and album) getting their due here I think the 'you were there' in Evermore is similar to 'Mastermind' in its duality - it refers both to Joe and to the fans. Especially as Aaron Dessner said it was very important to Taylor that Joe should play the piano in the studio recording too as it was " an important and special part of the story." It was during her darkest period in 2016, she also found her greatest love (at least till now ) and hence the cracks of light
The cracks of light is what makes me think it's the fans. Of course we know Joe was there but I can imagine the cracks being multiple people. Each crack being a fan account, loving tweet or post etc.

When I didn't see Speak Now on the list, I was disappointed but not surprised. Then when you put it on the honorable mention list, I was like 😳. I hate to admit that the first time I heard Speak Now was when I listened to the TV of the album, and I was just floored by its storytelling and couldn't believe that such a young Taylor wrote it. Such an amazing song!

Yeah, I think the only reason it's not on this list is because it's both of their favourites and it's been in top 5 of so many of these videos they said they would try to not put ATW10, august, ivy and cardigan in the next ones and will try to just pick the songs that absolutely shines in a certain category and leave it out of the rest (like if it has an amazing prechorus and it is on the prechorus list, leave it out of the other ones). I haven't thought enough about it to actually have a top twelve in this category, but I'm pretty sure "Mine" would be on my list and maybe even near the top. The entire song is a story to me, and I've always thought that you could make a movie or write a book just based on the one line: "You made a rebel of a careless man's careful daughter." There is just so much packed into that one line that leaves you wanting to know the rest of the story.

A deep dive on the folklore trilogy: My take on the love triangle is that James and Betty weren’t actually together when he got in the car with Augustine, and it’s mostly based on the second verse that takes place at the school dance. I think they both were in love with each other at this point but hadn’t become an official couple. Not taking into accont the actual wolf howl in this part of the song, James is portrayed as kind of a lone wolf (I was nowhere to be found, I hate the crowds, you know that) while Betty comes across as the popular but sensitive girl that likes to throw parties. I think James was working up the courage to ask Betty to dance during her favorite song, but lost that courage when he saw her dancing with this other guy (another reason I think they weren’t offical). It’s also revealed that that is why James left the dance early(plus, I saw you dance with him). His insecurities arise and he probably thinks that in the end of the day, he doesn’t stand a chance with Betty. So when he’s walking home on broken cobblestones and Augustine suddenly pulls up, he has nothing to lose. In actuality, the whole thing was a big misunderstanding where James lets his insecurities get the better of him, acts impulsively and then blames himself. In my mind, we learn more about James as a person in “This is me trying”. I like to draw parallells between the folklore trilogy, Getaway car and Cruel summer, where Taylor is James, Joe is Betty and Tom is Augustine. They reference each other with the car, the garden and the summer setting. I almost never comment but I had to get this out😅

And if we imagine that the story of Betty, James and Augustine is the story of this summer, but with the genders flipped, I could see how the time James spent with Augustine was bittersweet for him (slept next to her but I dreamt of you all summer long). Because even though he really liked Augustine and they had a great time together, he knew Betty was the one for him. And I imagine that that is the way Taylor felt about the situation as well, at the time. But it’s just a theory.🙃
Thank you for including Evermore!!!! This song means so much to me, i personallly connect to it in terms of grief. After losing a loved one it really does feel like the pain will be evermore- and it does feel like that for a really long time, and it will be in some ways. But just so many lyrics and lines describe a loss and that grief, like i rewind the tape but all it does is pause on the very moment all was lost- it a perfect line to explain wanting to remember your person and memories but everything is just stuck on the moment of death and everything since then.

I guess Enchanted isn't really a storytelling song overall, but the imagery created is so vivid you can create the scene in your mind: "Your eyes whispered 'Have we met?' Across the room your silhouette starts to make its way to me. The playful conversation starts; counter all your quick remarks like passing notes in secrecy." To me that makes it fit into the storytelling category.
I feel like 95% of Taylor's songs are story telling. And most of them paint the vivid picture and are interesting and progress. That's why I love her songs so much. I think even top 30 wouldn't do her catalog justice.
Such a fun video!! I think the storytelling on Debut is underappreciated, and I’m SO GLAD that Mary’s song was in the honourable mentions! Her discography is so vast and rich in terms of storytelling but Mary’s song deserves to be in the Top 15 storytelling songs. Also want to say that as an evermore stan (was my #1 on the album when it came out), I think the storytelling is overlooked by some people bc there’s no “obvious action” if that makes sense. But that’s the beauty, to me this song perfectly encapsulates the story of someone who’s lost and slowly getting back to themselves and overcoming depression. It’s amazing how Taylor did this 💔

I appreciate the evermore love. I was there when she performed it on tour and it was literally one of the songs I was most desperate to hear her play. I cried... it's literally such a fantastic song and it makes me so happy to hear people appreciating it for what it is. I deeply love the song Evermore too; so glad it made Bonnie’s HM list. But when I first fathomed the bridge, “when I was shipwrecked, I thought of you/in the cracks of light, I dreamed of you/and it was real enough, to get me through/but I swear, you were there”, I interpreted it as Taylor sensing her grandmother Marjorie’s presence, and that is what got her through the storm. When you lose someone you were so deeply connected to, you call on them in your darkest hours. You may dream of them, and you may feel their hand guiding your life; giving you strength. I can just imagine Marjorie encouraging her granddaughter from “the other side” to find a way through; to find a way to rise again. I loved your list! One observation I have is that in “cowboy like me”, the Gardens of Babylon line is truly a feat of imagery and storytelling. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon were allegedly once a place that existed, so beautiful and awe-inspiring that they were considered one of the Ancient Wonders of the World. No one knows exactly where they were, but their legendary mythology gained them glorious status. Unfortunately the Gardens were mysteriously destroyed and never rebuilt again. By evoking the Gardens of Babylon in reference to the cowboys’ love, Taylor is saying that this love they experience is something so extraordinary, so rare, so awe-inspiring and beautiful that it’s passed around like legend by the “ladies lunching” that have “their stories about when [he] passes through town.” However, it is not meant to last. And the end of the romance, like the destruction of the Gardens, will be permanent and unforgiving. She is referencing a common theme in her lyrics: fleeting ecstasy, and how lost romance leaves its participants forever marked by the experience of it.
I think it links with the lyric "forever is the sweetest con". Even if you'll be together till death do you apart, you won't be together forever. Just till one of you'll die and the other one is still left with heartbreak.
First, I want to thank you for doing these videos explaining the lyrics since for us fans who don't have English as a first language might be hard to understand some of Taylor's imaginary. ❤ Also, thanks because this channel actually feels like a friendship. When I was in high school I felt judged for liking Taylor and even by people I considered my friends, asking myself if they were right. Now I can see that we judge (not only her but other artists) without knowing and I'm glad to see people who see her genius. I don't know if you take suggestions but as you also react to other singers from time to time, I would recommend you to listen to Hijo de la Luna by Mecano since it has one of the best storytelling I've ever heard. Maybe you could read a translation or use "genius" to understand it... and maybe react to some suggestions made by the community...

One question - do we really (collectively) think Love Story is better (at least story telling wise) than Mary's Song? Because I have to strongly disagree. It is in my top 10 of all time as well… I was on that live stream weeping and I tear up every time I watch it (I’m tearing up now listening to you share your thoughts) thank you, Bonny.
HOW has no one brought up Tim McGraw?! Obviously it's a simple, sweet story but such strong imagery, a full progression - the first verse describes the relationship, the second verse describes their separation after the summer is over, and we learn there's a letter in a box under her bed; then in the bridge she's back on his street, delivering him the letter.... and then the twist is that the letter is what we've been hearing in the chorus throughout the song, it's her reminding him of their story. We even get a glimpse into the future with "someday you'll turn your radio on..." SO GOOD. So that's my honorable mention :)

I've always interpreted the "from sprinkle splashes to fire ashes" verse in YOYOK as a way to say "in the course of her enitre career". This meaning from the very first song of her very first album (Tim McGraw) to the last song of her latest album (at the time she wrote the song) being Evermore. In Tim McGraw she writes "I was right there beside him all summer long" (summer = sprinke splashes) while in Evermore she sings "Writing letters addressed to the fire" (fire ashes). This in my opinion makes the storytelling even more brilliant!!

Even with your disclaimer about trying not to repeat much…I am SOOO shocked to not see Ivy on this list. Such vivid imagery, I can picture every second of this on a screen in front of me when I listen and how the story plays out
All Too Well (actually 5 min version specifically) is the pinnacle of storytelling in every way possible: lyrically, the build in production and emotion, climax to slowing down and then building back up again. It’s so perfect and all works together to tell a complete journey. I don’t know how she does it. Also, it’s so fucked up how each chorus closes with the same kind of line with different lyrics, wind in my hair, down the stairs, running scared, it was rare I remember it all too well, because those lines to me are like a one sentence summary of the entire verse and chorus that preceded it. So then when she brings each of those lines back at the end of the song, she’s really recalling/summarizing the entire song back at the end, if you think of those lines as summaries of the verses and choruses.
THISSSSS! To me atw5 has just the perfect amount of detail to tell her story but let everyone paint the scene, while atw10 paints the whole scene on its own. Both slap tho.

I think the 'you were there' in Evermore is similar to 'Mastermind' in its duality - it refers both to Joe and to the fans.
Especially as Aaron Dessner said it was very important to Taylor that Joe should play the piano in the studio recording too as it was " an important and special part of the story."
It was during her darkest period in 2016, she also found her greatest love (at least till now ) and hence the cracks of light

When I didn't see Speak Now on the list, I was disappointed but not surprised. Then when you put it on the honorable mention list, I was like 😳. I hate to admit that the first time I heard Speak Now was when I listened to the TV of the album, and I was just floored by its storytelling and couldn't believe that such a young Taylor wrote it. Yeah, I think the only reason it's not on this list is because it's both of their favourites and it's been in top 5 of so many of these videos they said they would try to not put ATW10, august, ivy and cardigan in the next ones and will try to just pick the songs that absolutely shines in a certain category and leave it out of the rest (like if it has an amazing prechorus and it is on the prechorus list, leave it out of the other ones). I haven't thought enough about it to actually have a top twelve in this category, but I'm pretty sure "Mine" would be on my list and maybe even near the top. The entire song is a story to me, and I've always thought that you could make a movie or write a book just based on the one line: "You made a rebel of a careless man's careful daughter." There is just so much packed into that one line that leaves you wanting to know the rest of the story.

Speak Now didn't have a music video, but it did have a photoshoot in a church of her standing in the church. She also stood up in the church in the New Girl episode, so I think that's what most people remember. That's why no one can figure out what a gown shaped like a pastry looks like cause she never showed it.

A deep dive on the folklore trilogy:
My take on the love triangle is that James and Betty weren’t actually together when he got in the car with Augustine, and it’s mostly based on the second verse that takes place at the school dance. I think they both were in love with each other at this point but hadn’t become an official couple. Not taking into accont the actual wolf howl in this part of the song, James is portrayed as kind of a lone wolf (I was nowhere to be found, I hate the crowds, you know that) while Betty comes across as the popular but sensitive girl that likes to throw parties. I think James was working up the courage to ask Betty to dance during her favorite song, but lost that courage when he saw her dancing with this other guy (another reason I think they weren’t offical). It’s also revealed that that is why James left the dance early(plus, I saw you dance with him). His insecurities arise and he probably thinks that in the end of the day, he doesn’t stand a chance with Betty. So when he’s walking home on broken cobblestones and Augustine suddenly pulls up, he has nothing to lose. In actuality, the whole thing was a big misunderstanding where James lets his insecurities get the better of him, acts impulsively and then blames himself. In my mind, we learn more about James as a person in “This is me trying”.
I like to draw parallells between the folklore trilogy, Getaway car and Cruel summer, where Taylor is James, Joe is Betty and Tom is Augustine. They reference each other with the car, the garden and the summer setting.

@@jankova0013 Keeping Joe and Taylor in mind, they met in spring but didn’t officially start dating until october of 2016, cause Taylor got together with Tom instead, her getaway car. And if we imagine that the story of Betty, James and Augustine is the story of this summer, but with the genders flipped, I could see how the time James spent with Augustine was bittersweet for him (slept next to her but I dreamt of you all summer long). Because even though he really liked Augustine and they had a great time together, he knew Betty was the one for him. And I imagine that that is the way Taylor felt about the situation as well, at the time. But it’s just a theory.🙃
Thank you for including Evermore!!!! This song means so much to me, i personallly connect to it in terms of grief. After losing a loved one it really does feel like the pain will be evermore- and it does feel like that for a really long time, and it will be in some ways. But just so many lyrics and lines describe a loss and that grief, like i rewind the tape but all it does is pause on the very moment all was lost- it a perfect line to explain wanting to remember your person and memories but everything is just stuck on the moment of death and everything since then.

I guess Enchanted isn't really a storytelling song overall, but the imagery created is so vivid you can create the scene in your mind: "Your eyes whispered 'Have we met?' Across the room your silhouette starts to make its way to me. The playful conversation starts; counter all your quick remarks like passing notes in secrecy."
To me that makes it fit into the storytelling category.
I feel like 95% of Taylor's songs are story telling. And most of them paint the vivid picture and are interesting and progress. That's why I love her songs so much. I think even top 30 wouldn't do her catalog justice.
Such a fun video!! I think the storytelling on Debut is underappreciated, and I’m SO GLAD that Mary’s song was in the honourable mentions! Her discography is so vast and rich in terms of storytelling but Mary’s song deserves to be in the Top 15 storytelling songs.
Also want to say that as an evermore stan (was my #1 on the album when it came out), I think the storytelling is overlooked by some people bc there’s no “obvious action” if that makes sense. But that’s the beauty, to me this song perfectly encapsulates the story of someone who’s lost and slowly getting back to themselves and overcoming depression. It’s amazing how Taylor did this 💔

I appreciate the evermore love. I was there when she performed it on tour and it was literally one of the songs I was most desperate to hear her play. I cried... it's literally such a fantastic song and it makes me so happy to hear people appreciating it for what it is. I really relate to the way it discusses hard times and being faced with your own role in keeping yourself in sadness, but then ultimately ends on a note of hope and an affirmation that things will get better.

I deeply love the song Evermore too; so glad it made Bonnie’s HM list. But when I first fathomed the bridge, “when I was shipwrecked, I thought of you/in the cracks of light, I dreamed of you/and it was real enough, to get me through/but I swear, you were there”, I interpreted it as Taylor sensing her grandmother Marjorie’s presence, and that is what got her through the storm. When you lose someone you were so deeply connected to, you call on them in your darkest hours. You may dream of them, and you may feel their hand guiding your life; giving you strength. I can just imagine Marjorie encouraging her granddaughter from “the other side” to find a way through; to find a way to rise again. And when you watch Taylor perform this song in Cincinnati N2, and see her smile when delivering the line “you were there”, it feels like she is singing that directly to Marjorie. It’s so moving.

I loved your list! One observation I have is that in “cowboy like me”, the Gardens of Babylon line is truly a feat of imagery and storytelling. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon were allegedly once a place that existed, so beautiful and awe-inspiring that they were considered one of the Ancient Wonders of the World. No one knows exactly where they were, but their legendary mythology gained them glorious status. Unfortunately the Gardens were mysteriously destroyed and never rebuilt again.
By evoking the Gardens of Babylon in reference to the cowboys’ love, Taylor is saying that this love they experience is something so extraordinary, so rare, so awe-inspiring and beautiful that it’s passed around like legend by the “ladies lunching” that have “their stories about when [he] passes through town.” However, it is not meant to last. And the end of the romance, like the destruction of the Gardens, will be permanent and unforgiving. She is referencing a common theme in her lyrics: fleeting ecstasy, and how lost romance leaves its participants forever marked by the experience of it.
I think it links with the lyric "forever is the sweetest con". Even if you'll be together till death do you apart, you won't be together forever. Just till one of you'll die and the other one is still left with heartbreak.

When I was in high school I felt judged for liking Taylor and even by people I considered my friends, asking myself if they were right. Now I can see that we judge (not only her but other artists) without knowing and I'm glad to see people who see her genius.
I don't know if you take suggestions but as you also react to other singers from time to time, I would recommend you to listen to Hijo de la Luna by Mecano since it has one of the best storytelling I've ever heard. Maybe you could read a translation or use "genius" to understand it... and maybe react to some suggestions made by the community...
