Manly P. Hall: H.P. Blavatsky and the Secret Doctrine

  • Madame Helena Petrovna Blavatsky was a clear favorite of Manly Hall's, as he had a deep respect for her work and realized its importance to the esoteric and metaphysical community. Her "Isis Unveiled" and "Secret Doctrine" were both quoted extensively in Mr. Hall's magnum opus, "The Secret Teachings of All Ages".
    In this lecture, given in Los Angeles on May 16, 1962, Hall sets the context for H.P. Blavatsky's life and describes how difficult it was for a Western woman to travel in the East, parts of which were nearly inaccessible to even men at the time. She spent time in Asia, India, the Holy Land and the Americas (including studying the First Americans in the Southwestern United States).
    'The Secret Doctrine', along with Godfrey Higgins earlier 'Anacalypsis', were the most extensive works on comparative religion and philosophy that were printed in the 1800's. Hall took these books even further in 1928 with "The Secret Teachings of All Ages, as he also included over 50 color paintings and 200 diagrams and images along with the text.
    As one of our community members pointed out, this lecture was one in a five-part series, titled, "Landmarks of Esoteric Literature"

    As a tribute to Mr. Hall and in reverence for his love of Madame Blavatsky, we offer this lecture to all who are interested, and we hope to provide more lectures along these lines. This particular recording is almost 2 hours long, and was given as part of a 5-part Wednesday night seminar series on Esoteric Literature.
    Thank you for all your support of the Society, and your contributions are vital to the continuation of Mr. Hall's legacy.

    The insight and contributions of Manly P. Hall with his lectures helps one the most while one studies theosophy. When you need someone to help you understand and synthesize the ancient philosophies, mythologies and belief systems and also someone to help you while you try to gain certain perceptions (actually apperceptions as he likes to call it) into the deep and abstract meanings of the teachings, he was and always will be there. Not just for us but also for the future generations thanks to the work that you have been doing. His sentences beginning with "for all things" or phrases like "gradual unfoldment" will always echo in the minds of those who are grateful for his contributions (Btw still waiting for the pythagoras series with ever increasing excitement) :)

      Great comment, and thank you for the reminder on the Pythagoras series - the first of the 5 has been remastered so far. We paused this for the moment, because Hall makes several visual references and to that, we feel that just uploading the audio might not be sufficient. So we are exploring ways to make the whole thing a 'video' with graphics and imagery, or to produce a sort of companion piece (video or downloadable PDF) to help further illustrate his points.

    Blavatsky spent a long time staying in an octagonal building rather resembling a brick and mortar yurt on what is now Jalan MH Thamrin in Jakarta. This structure was incorporated into the modern high-rise HQ of Indosat Tbk, the Indonesian international telecoms carrier. Apparently this is where she worked on "The Secret Doctrine" Back in those days, in the 1880s, I think, the street name was Dutch and the city was called Batavia, the capital of the Netherlands East Indies.

    Theosophy archives mention her saying that she used the “astral light” to see the etheric double of actual physical books in existence as references which Olcott & a few others went & found such references & wrote about such. She also mentioned accessing/using the Akashic fields and Akashic realms. So this logically shows she used her spiritual gifts to do so therefore she was more than just a secretary taking occasional dictation from Master K or Master M which so many people unfortunately want to downgrade her to again being similar to an editor

    Does anybody know if there are any Lectures where MPH mentions Crowley?
    I am curious what his thoughts were on the Beast.

    • @ManlyHallSociety
      @ManlyHallSociety  2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      We have long wondered about this as well, and our archives turn up no match in a word search. It is quite possible MPH mentioned Crowley in a lecture, but most of those are still not text-searchable (beyond the titles). Our guess is that Mr. Hall likely did not approve personally, but more so on style and presentation than content, but that is pure speculation. There is ample recorded evidence that, in general, Hall was against sensationalism and the cult of personality that often follows such persons.

    • @Dovah21
      @Dovah21 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I feel his thoughts would have been mixed at best, more likely negative than not. I feel that Brother Hall would have regarded a lot of Crowley's work as "interesting, but dangerous". Brother Hall, as a man and a mystic, seemed very much an adherent to Universal or Divine Law. Whatever work of magic he enacted would have been done with the Law as a strict consideration. You know the scene in Doctor Strange where Wong says "We do not break Natural Law, we defend it." I see Hall as such a man. Crowley on the other hand, to my understanding, compelled his students to essentially be their own Law or Lawmaker (Do as thou wilt). He did encourage his students to be practical, however, and not to go around harming people while you "do as you wilt", some advice he probably should have benefited from himself.
      His contributions to the Occult aside, and those contributions are questionable, Crowley himself was not a particularly good fellow to put it lightly. He was deceptive, manipulative, and dismissive of people in general. Here's the words of another critic:
      "During his short career he abandoned his wives, children, wrecked the lives, and in some cases sanity, of his disciples and exploited his friends and enemies alike for his own personal gain and self aggrandizement. Crowley is perhaps the best or worst example-depending on one's point of view-of where the selfish pursuit of fame, money, material power and sex ultimately leads. Whilst he had plenty of sex during his lifetime and became more famous after death than he ever was in life, Crowley ended his days as a broken-down drug-addict in a seedy boarding house, alone and penniless."
      Doesn't sound like a man we should look up to as aspiring occultists ourselves. I know you didn't ask for a pamphlet in response to your thoughts, but we're all scholars here to some degree.

    His opinion about our European ancestors is extremely low... and utterly unjustified.
    He equals the construction of structures that serve as libraries and the usage of scrolls et cetera (a very materialistic view) with spiritual advancement...
    Our Germanic (German, Celtic, Slavic, Skandinavian...) ancestors were just as much spiritually advanced, as any other native culture around the world, their temples were the forests (not artificial structures that would obstruct them from nature) and their wisdom was spread through the living word.
    Though much was lost, especially due to the christian invasion & cultural/spiritual crusades, some of that knowledge has survived countless thousands of years and is still known. Anthropologists like Dr. Wolf-Dieter Storl (who i would consider a true spiritual german shaman) are excellent at collecting and presenting the ancient wisdom of our ancestors.
    We have many things in common with other spiritual cultures from all around the world, universal truths that are known everywhere.
