At last somebody is bringing back the traditional name for a triangular shape that was in common use until about 50 years ago. I'm nearly 70 now but we back then always thought of 'triangle' as a purely maths term. The everyday term was usually a 'garr'. Hence a 'garret' was a small area of a field or other piece of land that was separately fenced or hedged off - usually a 'corner'. The modern use of triangle for garr sounds very stilted tbh almost measured. It's a bit like calling ear-rings as ear-circles or baubles Christmas spheres. When we were playing games as kids we might call "form a garr" not "form a triangle"(!!!) This is so lovely and refreshing. Thank you.
This is the village where my late maternal grandparents lived. Have so many fond memories of walking around the village, feeding the ducks near the pond, visiting the church with its unique murals and even walking down to where the old station is located. Wasn't sure whether Sykes Monument fell under Garton or Sledmere parish so it was a bonus seeing it today rather than on the next episode. It dominates the surrounding area and views on a clear day are stunning going as far as Hull and Humber Bridge.
