The largest things in the universe are black holes. In contrast to things like planets or stars they have no physical size limit, and can literally grow endlessly. Although in reality specific things need to happen to create different kinds of black holes, from really tiny ones to the largest single things in the universe. So how do black holes grow and how large is the largest of them all?

I'm very early
You said you were done with black hole videos?
Not complaining, just asking.
Answer: MONEY money money, must be funny, in a rich -man's- bird's world
I love your videos
Ok
The weirdest thing i’ve heard today is that a tiny blackhole named “unicorn” is bullying a star many times the mass of our sun
oh god the irony
Yeah
Yeah lol
Called "unicorn" because we weren't detecting black holes of about 3 times the mass of the Sun and we weren't sure if it was our fault or they weren't there for some reason… Finally this one was found 😄
(Also inspired by the name of the constellation it was in, which is "unicorn" in Latin)

It sucks that they are paid off by Bill Gates
*Quick Update:*
This video was produced 2 years ago. As of January 2024, the largest black hole is Phoenix A
Yeah
I was reading the wiki on Phoenix A and saw it was discovered in 2010. Was it not determined that Phoenix A should be considered in this size comparison till this year? What changed?
@@shogunsovereign it was detected in 2010 , its size was unknown
@@shogunsovereign It's size was estimated to be around 100 billion solarmasses back then, but so was Holmberg 15A and the black hole in IC1101. Most evidence points to all of them being around the more common 40 billion solarmasses range because of how they interact with their surroundings.
Have yet to see any good evidence to actually support it's size claim after the initial paper on it. Don't know why it suddenly gained popularity and why everyone is claiming ut to be the largest black hole when TON 618 has a lot more evidence to back up it's claim for the throne.
That is nothing more than an indirectly derived estimate. There is nothing known about phoenix A*. Ton 618 is still the biggest one as of now

I've always been fascinated by space. Seeing one of those explosions up close and somehow surviving would be the ultimate experience. Or seeing a black hole from the least safe (but still safe) distance would be incredible. Seeing then collide would be the coolest thing ever.

I really like how, in my short 37 years, black holes basically went from complete SciFi fantasy objects to being real things that have been found and are currently being studied. It's truly an amazing time to be alive.
Good science fiction has its basis in science and can often be used as a point of loose predictions.

"But in reality it's probably even larger. Since TON 618 is so far away, we only see what it looked like 10 billion years ago"
*Laughs nervously*
My bwain hurts and I’m scared mom come pick me up
Here is the funny thing... the more recent view we get of the black hole, the sooner we will die
just when you thought it couldn't get bigger...
so when you think about how time is relative (going lightspeed for a few hours could equate to something like years later (my math is non existant)), stop to think that we are actually all time travelers.
Think of it this was: it takes light 10 billion years to travel from TON 618 to earth. Even if it were to move in our direction it would take waaay longer than that to reach us. Also, considering that the universe is expanding it probably steadily moves away from us and might not ever come into contact with our milky way. But before all of this could happen, our sun will burn out anyway.

As a scientist myself I fucking love the final mention of having to paraphrase and use certain data sets, as well as omitting others. Regardless of which academics work will have made the cut, I just know they'll all have been so pumped just to have been asked and involved. All while also linking sources and preempting anyso-calledd experts pooping some or any of whatyou'vee had to present to make an educational, fun and paletable video for the masses. I think linking and making use in posters and merch of that additional work which was perhaps initially thought to be superfluous information and research not needed for the videos final cut is such a fantastic and well thought through idea. Super efficient and the complete opposite of wasteful. Massive props for that! 😁
And speaking of preempting, just because anyone can say anything on the Internet. Should someone decide to tell me for whatever reason that I'm making my background up and would like specifics: I have a life/ biosciences background, particularly in chemistry and pharmaceutical sciences and am currently working in a clinical research and innovation setting for an organisation focused on the future and widespread implementation of digital pathology in clinical pathology pipelines worldwide
This scale is literally unfathomable. Those black holes are incomprehensibly large. Terrifying.
These are the things that dwell where God doesn't travel.

Here's a thought about the curious black hole size jump. That if when black holes get to a certain size they punch through another space time and eject material to a white hole. And the closer they are to another space time the more energy they lose. Let's say a lot of the black holes used to be a pretty close size but most of them ejected a bunch of their material at once because the other side of space time changed and got suddenly closer.

Next Gigaengineering playthrough when?
10:45 - Great Recap!
Pheonix A* just chillin undiscovered:
Its mass is in fact a theory in reality.
The “POV: You’re about to die” at 7:32 KILLED ME
lmaoo
same
I literally scrolled through the comment section wait to see this
If it killed you they didnt lie then

"Sir we just discovered a new type of black hole, what should we call it?"
"How big is it?"
"Massive Sir"
"Hmm, massive doesn't sound big enough, let's add a super onto the front"
“Sir we found something bigger than a super massive black hole”
“Idk what to call them at this point let’s just call it ultra massive”
"Sir another one-"
"You know what just name it, this black hole is big, but
Yo momma's bigger than this!"
Edit: someone proposed Yomamamasiveblackholes, neat
@@ryderrhees7106 Naming wasn't right. It should have been Massive Pro before moving into Massive Pro Ultra.
@@comradekenobi6908 "sir,Omega massive Black holes,my momma not that big"
"Hahahahahahahahhahahah no."

Love these videos so fun to watch
XD I was laughing so much. Thank you :D
You know, the epic choir really adds to the massive existential dread. Love it.
IKR , Im gonna have nightmares with that epic boss music
I usually really enjoy kurzgesagt videos but it's the first time that I've been astonished by one, and the choir really helped it
This music was some of the best in any kurzgesagt video. It just kept swelling as things got more epic to the point I was smiling just from the music alone.
As an astrophysicist who's done his PhD in precisely this topic, I wanted to commend you on the content and on the scripting of your video. It's not only very *very* scientifically accurate, but also very clear and well explained, without entering in unnecessary details and keeping it entertaining. I loved it!
Good to hear. Also, congrats on your PhD on Such a topic.

Does your job pay anything?
@@vasiavisilievic1873 Yes, it does, and not-so-bad actually. The tricky thing is to find stability. A regular scientist has probably changed their working country (or at the very least city) probably 3 to 5 times by age 35.
@@Razielezu1 Nice it does pay you but sad you have to leave your city/country 3-5 times
Trying to take a picture of a black hole is like trying to take a picture of wind.
You know that people are bored by everything because they have seen too much via Internet. But this video about gigantic black holes beside a video about" Vedic cosmology" are the two ones which really impressed me.
Imagining black holes is a funny concept. "Imagine something so big and massive that, even if you could imagine what you can't imagine, you couldn't imagine."
and then there's the quarks and other stuff which are so small that we again can't really fathom it either
Throw on top aphantasia and I’m having a ball
It's amazing that us... such small little beings stuck on a single planet know about these things
"I don't know I can imagine quite a bit"
Yet you still don't have an idea of it's size despite this realisation and neither do I. Yet even after understanding and making the statement I just made, I still probably don't really get the true scale of it all. Now how many times must I repeat this "despite this statement I still don't really get the true scale of it" statement? That is the real question.
