    Thank you, Liz! My eyes usually glaze over with the quasi-science spouted off on many health and beauty videos, but when you started talking LED vs. CFL and wavelengths in nm necessary for curing different gels, you had my attention. I am so pleased to finally find someone in the beauty industry who correctly explains the science in terms anyone can understand. As an engineer, this warms my heart. Specifically, you answered my question as to why so many manufacturers were claiming UV/LED when all I saw in their lamps were LEDs. You also cleared up my confusion on different types of gels and why some lamps work better than others with them. So again, THANK YOU! Keep up the good work, and keep nerding it up for people like me!

    I’m almost in tears, I’m so grateful for your videos. I live in a province with no regulations on certification for nail techs, but it’s the license that soft-blocks me from buying quality gel products. There are schools and programs where I live, but I’ve heard poor things about the information they give, and it’s not feasible for me to attend anyway. But I’m smart, I know how to do research, and I’m dedicated to making sure I can give myself and others beautiful nails while also being sanitary and safe about it.
    I’m so grateful for these videos because advice and information from professionals who’ve been there is priceless, and not something I would otherwise have access to outside of a certification setting.

    Wow! I'm a male in early 60s and found your technical explanation about UV and LED very well put. I'm not into doing nails, BTW, but just stumbled onto this video while researching LED UV lights. I'm also an electrical engineer, so I understand about wavelength and such. I'm not sure if you mentioned it, but the wavelength differences are grouped into UVA, UVB and UVC, where my understanding is that there is no LED with UVC in existence, thus requiring the specific formula gel for LED lamps. I may not be into nails, but I have a young daughter who is starting to experiment with nails. I might see one of these lamps around the house in the near future.😄

    Hello Liz. I just got my first gel manucure at a salon and I am 58 years old. I was not impressed. Although shiny...it was so bumpy it's not funny and had to have clear over top. I went to a different salon after 5 days because I was so unhappy and they took those off because they were all lifting and did it again and they were lovely and smooth. I want to do this myself now and found you. I have watched several of your videos and wanted to say thankyou for sharing such great value. I am ordering my lamp and some gel today so I can start doing overlays. So excited that people like you are here to help us on this journey. Loving your videos. Thank you so much.

I think they are still around anyway found one of my old lights during a clearing out and it still works! It is fluorescent wonder if it will cure some of the gel polishes. When gel polish first came out in the late 90’s it was revolutionary but I think we might have had to cure for 2 minutes but not sure about that. Thumbs were always separate and face up! My system way back then was a few hundred if memory serves!

    Many brands will say that you need to use 'Their' lamp, how true is this. If you have a quality lamp that is the full spectrum of light for curing, won't it cure most gels on the market. Thank you for another informative video, and all your hard work.

    • @TheNailHub
      @TheNailHub  5 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      Check out my gel polish issues video. I address how you can check if a lamp works for a particular gel. The main challenge for gel manufacturers is that they want to give their customers a guarantee on the products that they purchase. They also, for liability reasons, want to make sure that the customer who is using the gel does not have any negative interactions with it. Because of this, manufacturers identify a lamp that work with their line, test it, private label it, and then ask their customers to stick with that because it's the only tested and proven lamp that they for sure know works with their gel. That doesn't mean there aren't other lamps that will work with their gel, it just means that's the only lamp that the manufacturer of the gel has tested to go with their line. In general terms, it is easiest for a nail tech to just use the lamp that goes with their line of products, however, that is not realistic because most nail techs use more than one brand of product so in my mind it's better to find a very high-powered lamp that will cure all your products even if that means running the possible risk of side effects from over-curing (like potential brittleness, yellowing or premature product breakdown...which I've actually never experienced). There's a lot of good and valid points on both sides of this discussion but the truth is nail techs need to just realize the moment they venture outside of their product line that's their option, but they just have to take accountability for anything that comes their way as the manufacturer can't possibly test every lamp with their gel and it really isn't their responsibility to do so. I think of it like aftermarket parts for a car. You can deck out your car with as much cool stuff as you want like rims, lights, wraps etc, but if one of those things fails or ends up damaging another part of your vehicle you can't go back to the manufacturer of your vehicle and say "hey the wheels I bought (that you don't sell) broke my car"...

So as long as you have a good (not expensive and i have both a cheaper one i started with which i still love but small and an expensive one) and work for every polish. As long as you do the 1min or so cure. I at times cure longer. Good luck.

(I see some nail lamps that say "36 watt, or 12watt...etc, but I'm not sure what that means 🤔😅☺️)...I'm a beginner in the gel and acrylic world☺️😅...this video was very helpful and informative ☺️👍🏼you've got yourself a new subscriber & student 😊😉🤟🏼

    These videos and series are the most informative with the best information out of all nail videos on TH-cam; I watch a lot of nail videos so I know! So I thank you so much for all of this, it’s been transformative for me as many of my gel issues have been fixed from following your tips!
    One question - what about lamp wattage? Does that make any difference? It seems all the high end lamps have higher wattage?

    • @TheNailHub
      @TheNailHub  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      With LED lamps the wattage usually refers to the number of LEDs inside. Most LEDs are 1-3W each so more Wattage means more LEDs. It does not necessarily mean the LEDs are stronger. It just means there are more of them, but more LEDs means more UV light which in general means better curing.

    Liz you surely are the master of your craft,I'm surprised that your not a Surgeon Specialist - what I would like to know is all about natural nails - can you use the curing lamp for ordinary nail polish and maybe put a clear soak off jell coat on top ???

    I am so glad to have watched this video! Science is so fun for me and of course pretty things. I'm so glad they can go together!! I'm so excited that I made a good lamp decision and when I upgrade, I know exactly what I'm looking for. Ty!

    I LOVE THESE VIDEOS THAT YOU HAVE BEEN MAKING BECAUSE THEY ARE VERY INFORMATIVE !!! THANK YOU. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE MIRROR REFLECTION THEY HAVE INSIDE AND THE ONE'S THAT DO NOT HAVE THE REFLECTION ?

    • @TheNailHub
      @TheNailHub  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      If there's no reflection then the light is not able to bounce around and hit different areas. I highly recommend a lamp with a reflective interior. It improves curing.

    I have a CFL lamp, for three years and I don't want to change it. I don't have any problems with this kind of lamps, but ones every year I'm changing the bulbs just to be sure.

    This is such an interesting and informative video! I would really stress not to drop your LED lamp. My dad knocked my lamp off the table and while the lamp still turned on and all the LEDs appeared to light up it didn't cure my gel polish. As a result, when I tried to remove the inhibition layer I got gel all over my wipe and cuticles :/ On the plus side, I got to order a new lamp from The Nail Hub lol.

    Hello Liz! when you ask the client to take their hand out of the lamp, rotate hand upside down, rotate upright and replace hand in the lamp again, how many times should this be done? and i assume the curing time is ajusted accordingly? confused!! I really appreciate your videos! Thank you!

    • @TheNailHub
      @TheNailHub  6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      They should keep doing that until the timer goes off. Then you can either do a full cure or if you're like me and you work on one finger on one hand at a time then just keep going. All the fingers will end up getting cured fully by the time you finish the thumbs.

    Liz, I have a couple questions 1). your opinion on metal base vs plastic base 2). I have seen lamps with a purple light, clear light and even a pinkish light...when on. What is the difference with those 3 color lights when on and which one is recommended and why? tia

    @the Nail hub Omg I need to apologize ahead of myself lol, I saw the title of this video and my heart dropped I thought you were serious and I thought well that's it there's no hope for the nail community lol . I'm an admin of a large nail group on Facebook and sadly I cannot tell you how many people argue with me that its either UV or LED lamps even though I try to explain that they are making no sense. I love to share knowledge with people but ultimately I find people don't want to learn, great video tho

    • @brandyfearrington9344
      @brandyfearrington9344 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think part of the problem, at least from a beginner or new gel standpoint is: products have on them; UV cure time....and LED cure time.... and lamps say UV LED. So its confusing. And as a beginner your hear, cure per manufacturer. But they dont understand 1) it is actually uv just led bulbs and 2) are confused by do we cure by the Led time or uv time per manufacturer. I myself had researched and watched TONS of YT videos for over 6months, for right supplies and tips. There is a lot of info out there but not specified info on the each and every one of the products. So a person might feel justified by saying a comment like that but its only because they are not well informed enough, and what they had researched told them that. I really do appreciate those people out there who are patient and do have to constantly repeat themselves. I applaude all of you.. Because it does help. It makes them come back for more help.

    This May be a silly question but here I go.. Is there a healthier lamp?? A healthier way to cure gel?? I love gel.. starting to look into trying to do my own nails.. my nail tech is always pushing powder on me saying powder was healthier than gel.. Do these lamps cause health issues?? I honestly trust your response more than google..
