    I was full on crying at the end of this story quest... it's unfortunate that a lot of the people I saw wrote off Baizhu as the same as Orochimaru and saw him as someone who's practically abusing Qiqi. And it was all based off of just 1 vague line from her story profile too. And now we have his lore which is really sad and just... ugh he was so prematurely judged so bad.

    • @orrthehunter
      @orrthehunter ปีที่แล้ว +69

      prematurely judging someone is normal which is why a lot of people care about appearances first over getting to know a person first. It is not a bad thing since it is a natural habit for people to stay away from people who see someone that is maybe dangerous or bad in different ways but it still causes people to misjudge a lot of people who are actually good people.

    • @NickIsMe171
      @NickIsMe171 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      @@fantalone666 I don't think Dottore's immortality can work in Baizhu's case. Baizhu tries to achieve immortality so that he can have unlimited life force to give away, as well as a body that can sustain unlimited poisons and diseases. Dottore can, in a way, be immortal only thanks to his undisclosed number of segments, allowing his presence to stretch across space and time. He looks more like (nigh-)omnipresent than immortal. Two issues with this are, one, can these artificially created bodies give out life force, and two, can these bodies sustain all the sufferings in the world without breaking apart. Maybe, it might come down to the burden that Baizhu may have to constantly create more bodies as dispensable disease carriers, meaning his existence is merely eons and eons of "birthing" new clones like a baby making machine. Just like Xiao said, immortality may not be the blessing Baizhu wants.

  • @bzzztbzzzt2428
    @bzzztbzzzt2428 ปีที่แล้ว +544

    What's interesting is the parallels between Baizhu and Dottorre.
    One is that both are so invested in their research and is willing to do some very dubious moral thing to achieve it. What's different is their motives. Baizhu's is to help save lives while Dottorre is seeking knowledge for the sake of knowledge.
    Another is how they treat human lives. Dottore doesn't give a shit about it as obvious from Collei, his poor subordinates that died and many others. Meanwhile Baizhu is so attached to his humanity and treats human life as something that should be saved and preserved for as long as he can manage it.

    One of the thing that i *really* appreciate in this Story Quest is giving Hu Tao a serious topic of conversation. Everytime she appears in, she is always this jolly, happy-go-lucky kind of character and every scene she's in, it's always nothing too serious.
    I'm glad they finally gave her something that take her seriously, it's a breath of fresh air and gave her more depth as a character.

      @@Internal_shiver No. That's not what her character is. That's the meme around her. Hu Tao sees immortality as the violation of natural law. She believes, and not without reason, that the cycle of life and death is essential to maintaining the functioning balance of the world, and that without it there would be chaos and destruction - this is precisely the reason Wangsheng Funeral Parlour was founded. It's something she has been taught her entire life. Hu Tao is a very compassionate person, she doesn't want anyone to die, but she does want people to meet their death naturally and being as fulfilled as possible.

      The previous cheery, jolly atmosphere of Hu Tao's scene actually goes well with her intention. She never wants people around her to feel heavy all the time because of death. She keeps the smiling face because she wants to spread the attitude of enjoying life. Death should be her business and the dead's business only, so she would not want to look like such a buzzkill.

  • @bookswithike3256
    @bookswithike3256 ปีที่แล้ว +230

    Baizhu's quest was such an incredible exploration of the theme of immortality vs. death, and the morality of sacrificing yourself for the sake of others, but I think one of the most interesting manifestations of this is Changsheng.
    She plainly states that she does not want anyone to suffer because of her, and thinks that people taking her contract is a bad thing. She expresses a wistfulness and acceptance about being allowed to die and be free from the curse of her contract. But she keeps offering the contract to people even though she could just stop, because she cannot let go of the instinct to cling to life with everything she has. Changsheng wants to die. And Changsheng does not want to die.
    I find her the perfect encapsulation of the argument.
    A few other thoughts:
    1. Baizhu's master asked whether the contract with Changsheng was the poison or the cure. I think this is a deliberate reference to the Pharmakon. Pharmakon is an Ancient Greek word which means both poison and cure. The Pharmakon could be either, but it is symbolically both.
    2. The Moon is extremely symbolically significant to Genshin and the extended Hoyoverse as a whole. It's a common motif throughout all of the games. So for Baizhu to explicitly describe what he's doing as flying for the moon is extremely interesting. Because despite its prevalence in the story, I have no idea what the moon actually symbolises for Hoyoverse.
    3. I love the detail that Baizhu's coat was passed down through the generations ever since the first doctor to take the contract. That's a really neat character detail.
    4. Crackpot theory: The first doctor Changsheng had a contract with was Pantalone. Does it make sense with what we know of those characters? No, especially since the doctor is supposedly dead. But he looks so much like a young Pantalone it's ridiculous.

      The Moon analogy is probably saying that acquiring Immortality is the same as going to the moon, meaning in order to save lives he must reach great lengths to seek the impossible going beyond mortal means.

    • @AvronV
      @AvronV ปีที่แล้ว +9

      One of Mihoyo's first games was "FlyMe2theMoon". I don't know what it's about and I'm not sure if it is even accessible anymore, but it might be why Hoyoverse continues to use moon motifs in a lot of their other games. The moon is also related to immortality in some Chinese myths, like Chang'e and the Jade Rabbit (who actually serve as Yaoyao and Yuegui's inspiration).

    • @yimingli5666
      @yimingli5666 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      For the moon part, I think you care relate to the MoonChase festival several month ago. the meaning is rooted in a Chinese legend of the goddess of moon----chang'e. She had a happy life with her husband on the ground. One day, her husband came home and claim he found the Elixir(Chang sheng yao, and that's where the while snake changsheng's name come from)In order to live forever, she took the medicine by herself without telling her husband and succeed, but the consequence is she float to the air and ended up land on the moon forever without the company of her husband and family. so moon, in many cases, symbolize immorality and reunion(as Chang'e never meet with her husband again) in Chinese culture.

    • @wildwolfdante
      @wildwolfdante ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@phatbeatz1311 I think it's moreso of a reference that he's going about what his predecessors wanted to achieve with wastly different means. Hence the whole transferring deseases and poisons onto himself and trying to reach immortality thing. The Moon will not burn up the moth, though it's also unlikely it'll ever reach it either.

I'll give quick summary for those that don't know the story. The doctor was in love with a white snake spirit/demon but didn't know who she was. He was literally scared/startled to death upon seeing her real form. His snake wife wanting save him steals a immortality herb from the gods and revives him. A misguided monk pesters the family, even sealing poor wife after she has a son. Said son goes on be very successful and influential, eventually freeing his mother and family reunite happily. Baizhu’s such a tragic character man
    One thing I noticed is that people are very black and white about Hu Tao and Baizhu, I.e either Hu Tao’s a dick for wanting to Die or Baizhu being completely virtuous for saving the guy’s life. I appreciated thst you did call out how pretty fricked up it is what he did with basically zombifying the guy, even though he intends good from it. We have to remember that Hu Tao’s whole thing is living life without regrets and then being able to pass on to death ( her vision story about her grandfather) so to her Death is just a small step to the after life. To Baizhu, he sees death as a painful and suffering endeavor and doesn’t want anyone, not even himself, to experience it so that’s why he’s gone this “war path” against it to defy it, no matter what that entails.
    The tragic part for me is that we see in genshin how immortality is not all its cracked up to be. Zhongli, Azdaha and The Khanreians suffer from erosion and lose memories of their loved ones. Xiao warns him when we visit the dad’s house, just like Hu Tao how has been strictly against what Baizhu is doing, but it doesn’t matter to him.

He knows immortality will be painful and has the stance he'll either achieve it, or he won't, and he and Changsheng will die. He doesn't have any disciples for this reason. He saw his Master die with regrets and can't even remember his own parents from when they died.
      Hu Tao on the other hand is a hypocrite. She can't be upset with Baizhu curing people so they die of old age or natural causes when she interferes herself as she did with Jiangling. Qiqi being revived was the will of the adepti who very much understand the laws of life and death and the consequences, yet Hu Tao thinks to essentially go against the will of the archons to do what she feels is right based on her beliefs.
      They're both playing Archon in their own way.

    Tbh, I feel like it's important for Paimon to ask and voice these type of questions. Like the whole "Doesn't using your life force hurts you?" and then just having everyone in chat calling her dumb and stuff.
    But she asks because she cares about Baizhu's well-being and honestly does not understand why someone would continuously use such a dangerous method if it hurts them. It also helped us find out that Changsheng isn't some parasitic snake sucking Baizhu's life force, but rather she does care and help tries to balance his Qi even if she sounds rude about it.

    So, I think about Collei. We know that she has god remains sealed inside her. Dottore used them to suppress her eleazar. Now we know that the god-remains-poison, as Baizhu said, "consists of mother lodes and minor lodes". So we have two options. Either Dottore used the mother lode or minor one. I suppose Collei wasn't the only one who was "cured" that way - so, Dottore used the poison as minor lodes for his patients. But Collei's god remains were significantly more active than Jialiang's, they even killed people. Of course, from Baizhu's quest we know that "whoever is administering the poison can manipulate the source to indirectly control the poisoned individual's behavior", so those murders were Dottore's fault, not Collei's.
    But I want to say about another probability. Why the god remains in Collei were so strong? Maybe Dottore changed the poison somehow, so its effect was increased. It seemed almost like another type of elemental energy that Collei was using. Then it means that Dottore gave her some form of a vision. Or I should say "delusion"?
    Where was the delusion factory in Inazuma? The one where we met Scaramouche. Yashiori island. You know, the place with some old body parts.. of Orobashi no Mikoto. The remains of an ancient god. So, all of this poisoning is the process of making delusions. Uh, it works on a larger scale than I thought.

    While I understand the sentiment that Baizhu's actions near the end of the quest were questionable I always felt it was akin to a doctor reacting to an emergency situation and responding within their medical knowledge to stabilize a patient with a method with very little hope of success. To put it into a modern context I would compare it to someone who is dying from a critical and sudden complication being given a treatment or implant that has had very few trials but has shown some success in order to stabilize the patient. Such a scenario would indeed cause uncertainty to the length and quality of life for the patient afterwards and in any other circumstance a discussion about said experimental treatment would most likely take place but given the circumstances I believe Baizhu made the best decision he could to save as many people as he could. Yes, Dr. Baizhu prepared the materials beforehand which shows he premeditated his actions which makes it seem like he's a schemer that was taking advantage of this opportunity to test this treatment method but at the same time could you really say that any good doctor worth their salt wouldn't be prepared to respond to something they knew could happen to their patient even if it meant turning to a cutting edge innovation or satellite field of research?

    Maybe the only true immortality that humans can achieve in Teyvat is whatever 'poison' that caused the Khaenrians immortality, if so Hutao's stance is very reasonable. Goodness knows if Qiqi will always have her sanity as the years go by, makes me wonder if there is an elixir of immortality in Teyvat that doesn't have a huge price to pay.

    I really wish we could replay story quests, his story was one of my favorites. Though it made me dislike Hu Tao even more and she came across pretty hypocritical. My copium is that Baizhu's death flags are so blaringly obvious that death will be the gateway to him achieving immortality. Baizhu wasn't trying to save him entirely, just give him time to properly say goodbye. Can't really talk about becoming a zombie when the person dead, and as Baizhu said, it wouldn't have worked without Jiangling having the will.

    • @mccakeatron9971

      Hu Tao and Baizhu are honestly two side of the same coin. Baizhu wants people to rightfully survive cause they very much deserved it while Hu Tao wants people to live their life to finally and ultimately pass on. She never wants death she wants people to live life and die with no regrets. She is never mad that Jianliang survives another day to say his final goodbyes, shes mad cause the natural order of life and death has to be disrupted to get it. Afterall death is death, in what she has learned cheating death wont get you what you want death will come anyways which is why its important to live it till the time comes. Of course theres plenty with regrets but thats just life. She doesnt hate Baizhu for saving for lifes that deserves it but the dubious methods can tick a lot of people off especially when it ultimately leads to zombification. Overall her job is similar to the grimm reaper. She doesnt want to cause death she helps guides the souls to finally depart and reach the natural stage in life. If you have the chance live life to the fullest, say final goodbyes and die with no regrets

    Just want to share something else regarding this story quest. May 2023 a young female player named Jiangli approached a Genshin Streamer in China to give away her account for free. The streamer asked why and she told him that she got diagnosed with brain cancer with only months to live. She loved the game so much so she wants to find someone to look after her account and her beloved characters after she passed away. A lot of players in the Chinese Genshin community heard the story and out cried to Mihoyo to create an NPC in the game for this young girl to cheer her up. Mihoyo never offically responded to that request however later players found Baizhu's story quest has this character named Jiangli. Jiangli passed away Sep 2023 but everyone believed she had just left for Teyvat as she wished for.

The name is derived from Zhanbu which apparently has to do with using God powers, but Baizhu decided to call it Bubu - Bu in Chinese meaning No (like Bu Hao means Not Good) so No God powers involved. So it's a very important explanation of Baizhu's practice and should be taken very seriously.

    I'm siding with Baizhu on that one to be honest.
    Sure the man wanted to die but was only because he was under the impression that it was the only way. Since the beginning he wanted to live and seeing his child grow up. If he knew this wasn't the only way to do it, he would have jumped to saying yes. Plus he was happy to being alive even for just a couple days.
    He might be a zombie now but it's not like Qiqi he can lives a life almost normally. He is in deed "between life and death" a bit like when people are living off machines in a coma in real life exept he is actually conscious in genshin which is what a lot are reproching to the system in place irl. I would also say that the "could dies in days, weeks or years we don't know" is exactly like living from the start (even more with the condition the man was born with).
    I don't know how the kid is feeling. I think he would have been traumatized either way but at least it's not sudden. The parents have time to prepare him and explain things to him.
