    Brilliant Paul I love the comical element in this where you bring your family into play, Rebecca playing a PR man she's good at that

    Superb. I have shared in the DN&SR Facebook group (though it has probably gone through there many times before!)

    Love this series. As a child I used to travel between Winchester and Newbury on this line. Later, as a student, I worked on the building of the dual carriageway that ran along the formation at Sutton Scotney. It was part of the inspiration for my own Ten Minute Railway Tales.

      @@pwhitewick It's tougher work making videos than many people realise. I'll keep watching whenever you manage to get one out.

    Fantastic video (like most of yours). I spent part of my youth running up and down the disused line past Worthy Down when I worked there, and I have often walked with my mum along other parts of the line south of Winchester towards Hockley. The DN&S always suffered from a lack of cash and would probably have such down Beeching or not. Its best time was in WWII when the line was doubled in the north and more loops installed in the southern part. Thanks so much for covering it.

    Thanks for encapsulating the early history of this line for us. I grew up exploring this line, venturing further and further afield on my bike. Shawford, King's Worthy and Worthy Down gave way to Tufton viaduct and Whitchurch, and ultimately Newbury and Oxford. Bits of embankment and cutting continue to disappear under development or farmland on an ongoing basis...

      Richard Griffin Thank you. It has quite a history, but as you suggest quite a lot has vanished over the years. Some of the stations took some searching!

      Hehe, yes indeed, like Litchfield which used to be right on the A34 trunk road as was, but that road is now a dead-end disappearing (with cat's-eyes and faded white lines) into a farmyard... but has the 'new' A34 where the trackbed was. :(

    Interesting. Just shows you the mess you get into proposing a private railway with a poor business case and not enough capital. The fact that the line was opened in the early 1880s when the majority of lines had already opened just shows you it was going to struggle. The line wasn’t a victim of Beeching, the stations were closed in early 60s. I suspect BR had a duplicate line on its hands. Single track with few services serving small villages, BR concentrated traffic on Southampton to Didcot via Reading. I can’t see it ever re-opening - A34 built on trackbed south of Didcot. You could re-open Newbury to Didcot, electrify and use as a through route but I doubt there is the interest. Some lovely stations on the line.

    • @pwhitewick
      @pwhitewick  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Indeed. I think even in the 1880's they felt there was still a viable case for a fresh North to South route.

    A really great series of video's, really interesting and well put together, keep up the good work! Just the right mix of other styles while keeping it original! You might want to look into getting an ND filter for your lens so you can shoot outside without it being over exposed :)

    Just love these. I live in Upton and we back on to the railway, sustrans have it now and it’s much used by cyclists, dog walkers and joggers. They’ve just got planning permission to build houses up on the old rifle range. Progress ? If you come this way again let us know, we’re a friendly lot.

    • @chrisfay2419

      It’s a bit of an urban myth that SJP resulted from dug out foundations for a station. It is the site of an old gravel pit - hence the topography. The station was proposed for that area though - probably just to the north east of the park, and Didcot, Newbury and Station (now Stratton) roads are certainly a clue to what was proposed, but the roads were laid out after the plans for the line were abandoned.
