What a way to kick of the new year :) Based on some theories I saw it is also a commentary on the idol industry. Ditto was about the fan-side and OMG is about the idol-side. The MV constantly glitches between them as real people, the characters they play in MVs, ... to the point where it's hard to figure out what's actually reality and what is fiction. Like how it can be easy as an idol to lose yourself. And the role you play as an idol becomes your personality. There's a lot more and all kinds of easter eggs and call backs but this is the general idea I gathered so far :D
DITTO AND OMG BOTH SIGNIFIES THE IDOL AND FAN RELATIONSHIP. Let's break these into 2: OMG MV: OMG basically represents the idols' perspective as a K-Pop Idol. In the OMG MV, the 3 of the members are acting as someone they are not (Hanni as an iPhone, Haerin as a cat, and Hyein as a Princess). Acting as someone they are not simply signifies the Kpop Groups' concept culture. Danielle, on the other hand, seems to be in the middle. She said that they are just acting for an MV but she was also not sure because she might be going insane, and she was the first one to break the fourth wall because it seemed like the 3 members are already too deep in their characters which is driving the 3 insane as well. They are all in a psychiatric hospital too. Minji, on the other hand, represents the leaders in Kpop Groups. There was a scene wherein the Minji from Attention MV said, "All right, stop", and I think that is Minji knowing how to have control in her life as a kpop idol. She then became as the doctor of NewJeans at the end of OMG MV, which signifies her leadership in their group NewJeans. The lyrics of OMG can also be interpreted as the Idol/Fan Relationship just search for an English Translation Ditto MV: Ditto represents the fans' perspective towards K-Pop groups. I ask all of u to also search the English translation of Ditto lyrics and it can literally signify an obsessed fan's perspective towards a k-pop group (but it can also signify a love interest which I think is cool, same with OMG lyrics). The Ditto MV has the main character, Heesoo, which was said to represent the fans because of her name. She uses the camera to symbolize escapism (which is relevant in fan culture). The guy in the Ditto MV represents Heesoo's reality (if u think ab it, they were literally just flirting if u combine their scenes, they even got together at the end of Side B). Lastly, Newjeans simply represents the idols. They appear literally everywhere in Heesoo's life and comforts her (there was a scene wherein Newjeans were comforting Heesoo in the MV). IM LITERALLY JUST BORED AND IDK WHAT IM SAYING BUT IM OBSESSED WITH THEM!!! this is my own understanding so let me know what yall think hehe
Now I know why there’s called New Jeans. It’s new but something very familiar to us. It’s old fashioned but also modern. Fucking genius… Ever since they dropped the debut out of no where I’ve been obsessed, just like the majority of us I assume. I think people are fucking tired of cookie cutter groups with the hard drops and switch ups all the time… They are truly a breathe of fresh air.
Ditto MV and OMG MV are connected. Ditto is about kind of poignant reality of the relationship between an idol and its fans. OMG is about fantagies daydreamed by fans of idols. OMG MV tells idols are not a Steve Jobs, Doctors, Princess, Prince, and cute pets but just human unlike their fans idolize them.
this is my take on it- the music video was just a camp way of expressing the idol's side of the parasocial relationship between an artist and a fan. hanni's monologue in the beginning really brings that to light: "when you call me, i will run to you anytime anywhere. i exist for you" it brings the concern of artists having to exist only for the fans- they're trying to say they're *real* people too. she's an "iphone", basically a metaphor for being a person who has to run and be 'on' when the button (app) is pushed. danielle is very smily/bubbly type of person. fans always comment on her happy attitude and when she's watching the tv static and laughing at it, i think it shows that she's stuck in the label that people cast on her. so she's just laughing at nothing in that scene. hyein has princess syndrome, because while always trying to dress up and be her prettiest self for the fans, she forgets reality and confuses herself with fairytales. (snow white, sleeping beauty, and the revenant references) haerin- ever since debut, fans and nonfans have said haerin looks like a cat so much that she actually starts to believe she's a cat. minji is the unofficial leader of the group (there are no positions in nwjns, but a lot of people and myself included think she has leadership qualities) and she's the oldest. so she's been known to take care of her members very well. hence her thinking she is a doctor who's under pressure to take care of her members. i think the team at ador and hybe are VERY self aware of media and newjeans' market. they know what people say about newjeans!! this is their first comeback and only 5 months since their debut and they're already challenging the industry and doing callbacks to their debut! a MASTERPEICE of a music video, and the song is 10/10! i love the breaking of the 4th wall, i love how they called out their haters at the end of the video, i love hanni dressed as steve jobs. i mean, this video has it all- humor, weird/quirkyness, references, callbacks, serious topic, lore, introspection, thought provoking... no one is doing it like newjeans. i mean that literally, this has never been done before
I don't normally care about lore for kpop groups/mvs but this group, god damn they've got me hooked. And then add on top that their music is such a vibe, they are absolutely dominating
It's about the girls being lll and portraying themselves as different people: Minji thinks she's the doctor👩🏻⚕️ Hanni thinks she's an iphone or siri📲 Danielle insists they're New jeans👖 Haerin thinks she's a cat😺 Hyein thinks she's a princess👸🏻 Ofcs we confused about Minji character, Minji thinks she's a care taker who's taking care of her friends but she herself is mentally😭😭😭
I like how they always have a famous actor or actress in their videos. Shout out to Kim Joo-hun. If anybody is wondering who he is, he is from “It’s Okay to Not Be Okay” and is the doctor in this video at the beginning
Again, NewJeans showed new Music and Messages~! You can find out what the theme of the MV is through the interview of the director Shin- Woo Seok who made of MV . While working with the members), Director 'Shiin woo seok' learned how pure, clear, and free spirits they had, and This MV contains the concerns of producer Min Hee-jin and director Shin who are concerned that such things are suppressed and restricted by the evaluation and judgment of others. This applies not only to NewJeans, but also to ordinary people who are judged by others and live to satisfy them. It's because if you're conscious of others, you're bound to experience a situation where you lose yourself. Hah!
Exactly what you said, I'm sure the artists and producers had a direct intention behind the meaning of the MV(fan+idol relationships) but the interpretation and feeling we derive from it will depend on the audiences' own views and experiences. This is what all good art is like, truly a masterpiece.
I feel like the member believing they are different things represents what the fans see them as for example haerin is known in the fandom for resembling a cat for her cat eyes, hyein is known for her beauty and her modeling career minji as the oldest member she is like the stereotype mother and caring of the group so I think they represent how idols sort of try to become what their fans want them to become and sort of loose themselves on the way. As for Danielle She is maybe only identifying herself as an idol and is the only things she can think about.
New year new intro lets gooo ;d Hanni part could be about parasocial relationship idol-fans, "i exist for you" etc, Also she's using in Korean a word for 'you' that's not commonly used, which is mainly used between married couples, in a poetic manner etc, and outside is considered rude/weird(from what i gathered, would be great if someone could correct me etc), which kinda sounds for me as telling the connection between them and fans is so deep that she's using that expression, or smth like that... The end keyboard part is definitely haters, and telling them 'u crazy, get a life' xd Oh, and i saw someone talking about MV having references/similiarites to korean movie "I'm a cyborg but it's ok" ,and yeah, this movie takes place in the same place as MV, as for an institution.
Thank you for the reaction! You are the first to match my thoughts about an incoming (or already started?) 5th gen. Gens are unofficial and subjective to many anyways, but I truly never had a moment before in my 11 years of Kpop where I just suddenly was like "... a new Gen has started". But the girl groups who debuted in 2022 did that for me, and it makes me very excited for the future!
Did anyone notice that when Hanni was explaining how she believes she is an iPhone and she when she was showing the messages app she was sending a message and the message said "Heesoo please answer the phone" and heesoo is the name of the girl who was recording behind the camera in ditto the music video that was imagining the New Jeans members
Im back watching all the reactions to the song that was my number 1 in spotify this year, and yeah, i love this video ahahhahahahahah kaia react just like i reacted when i first watched it... and i wasnt even a kpop fan at the time xdd
My understanding of the music video itself is of the music video itself. The characters in the music video know there in a music video, and are preforming like a live action mv through music and dance. The music video is a music video that portrays itself.
Even the name New Jeans - people wear the same pair of old jeans for years - you love them and they're so comfortable and they you don't want to let them go, but then you finally get a pair of new jeans and it's like the start of a whole new era. lol
good thing is that fans surely can enjoy more thru the vid, and the one thing missing is that this is kinda confusing for light fans lol (and intro seems like commercial). In general, this is a cool and fresh MV!
Not sure if this makes sense at all, but I feel like all of the girl's mental states and beliefs about themselves are commentary on how Kpop fans view idols in a para-social relationship. For example, Hanni as an iPhone represents how we think our idols are always there for us like a phone is, Minji as a doctor supposes that idols can heal their fans, Hyein represents how fans view their idols as fantasy people and not actually based in reality, and maybe Haerin shows how some fans just think idols exist to be cute for us possibly. Meanwhile Dani is the voice of reason and the reality that idols are just doing their job. Idk just what came to mind.
A bit confusing but good song 👍🏻. Wanted to ask if there is a specific reason you didn’t react to the „new“ pixy song yet? Thought they are one of your favorite groups so I was just wondering. It released over 2 weeks ago and hasn’t even gotten 13k views 😕and less then 10 reaction videos
I think new jeans is the future of kpop, but i´m not sure if its time for 5th gen already, it depends on other groups that will debut if they go to new directions or not.
OMG mirrors Ditto, the reality is bent, who's real? Heeso? NewJeans? For example Haerin says she's not a cat in Ditto and she believes she is in OMG. Also the lyrics, they ask to say "me too" (ditto) and it's possible they didn't receive the answer they expected, ended up being hurt (yes reference to the song) and that was too much to handle.
I find classifying artists in generation a bit silly, that's something that only happens in kpop. Could be because in the past artists popularity would fade out once they got older and a "new" generation would emerge but that doesn't really happen anymore. Older groups are still mentioning or even gaining more popularity. There's no need to put another title to a group by identifying them as a certain generation, they all work in the same industry anyways.

So, while loving their comeback otherwise, the end of the MV completely ruined it for me. I decided last summer that even though Cookie made me far too uncomfortable to enjoy the rest of their debut, that I would keep an open mind and see how this comeback goes. I enjoyed Ditto enough that I shared it with my hubby, and was really looking forward to OMG. So picture me getting to the end of OMG after the credits and loving the video, too... but then someone making a mild comment about how they're concerned about whether an MV is appropriate for the girls is portrayed as a crazy person in a mental ward? It felt like someone threw a cold bucket of water over my head 😕 I feel like me keeping an open mind was rewarded with a slap in the face. Sorry, I don't care how innovative MHJ is, it comes across as vindictive, no?
never bopped in confusion so much
I takes me 3 times watching without reading comments section to understand the storyline... and yea first time listening but still bopped in confusion
What a way to kick of the new year :)

I like how you describe it, they even mention Heeso so at the end the question of who is real, goes both sides.
"i was actually an iPhone
I exist for you"
i-phone = i-dol
DITTO AND OMG BOTH SIGNIFIES THE IDOL AND FAN RELATIONSHIP.

All if their songs so far have just gotten better like everytine one comes out it's my new favourite

Damn, that new intro is 🔥🔥🔥
Thanks buddy! It was very satisfying to make
New Jeans is doing "Pure Art" ....... everything they do is Art 🎨🎨🎨🎨🎨🎨 IU and NewsJeans together on IU Pallet #21 shows them doing their best Art.
It's about the girls being lll and portraying themselves as different people:
Minji thinks she's the doctor👩🏻⚕️
Hanni thinks she's an iphone or siri📲
Danielle insists they're New jeans👖
Haerin thinks she's a cat😺
Hyein thinks she's a princess👸🏻
Ofcs we confused about Minji character, Minji thinks she's a care taker who's taking care of her friends but she herself is mentally😭😭😭
But Hyein is a princess!
Hanni is 2for2 in songwriting. First Hype Boy and now OMG 😳 kinda looks like she had a vision too considering her opening skit was so in depth!
Another amazing song by an amazing group
I like how they always have a famous actor or actress in their videos. Shout out to Kim Joo-hun. If anybody is wondering who he is, he is from “It’s Okay to Not Be Okay” and is the doctor in this video at the beginning
OMG new intro!!! The underwater instrumental is perfect I love it! Wishing you all the best for the new year and keep up the great work : )

It's so unique and somehow nostalgic hearing a mix of some classic old kpop beats. but yet super unique with it's own style.
yesssssssss i was waitin for the reaction!
thanks for reacting
I was getting ready to hum the starlight intro but hey Underwater was a fun little surprise!
I love Hanni voice
Even the name New Jeans - people wear the same pair of old jeans for years - you love them and they're so comfortable and they you don't want to let them go, but then you finally get a pair of new jeans and it's like the start of a whole new era. lol

Hearin thinks she's a cat
Hanni thinks she's an iPhone or siri
Hyein think she's a princess
Danielle says their newjeans
Exactly on Haerin. When they see the cat, it's the other four girls looking at it, because it's Haerin.

In response to your final 2 minutes insights and thoughts on just NewJeans musically and as a group...ditto. 🥰😍🐰

I'm looking forward to the dance practice video because you can tell they were about to go in on the choreo during the beat breakdown.
And now we have THREE perf videos!
Same people who made this MV made Ditto, FYI.
please. ..protect newjeans........help.........
This MV this time makes more sense than Ditto imo. It's easier to understand.
Who the hell is Director, writer of their lore? Christopher Nolan lol. I think I have lost all of my braincells trying to figure out Ditto & Omg Mv

Interesting that the Doctor was in “It’s Okay Not To Be Okay”.
I think new jeans is the future of kpop, but i´m not sure if its time for 5th gen already, it depends on other groups that will debut if they go to new directions or not.

4th generation in kpop started in 2018. Cultural shifts aren't the same thing as generations.
Actually generations start when there’s a shift in general public love for a group. How blackpink took away from 2ne1 and SNSD.
How New Jeans took awhile from blackpink and twice.
It’s the birth of a major group that hype and domination
Im 100% sure newjeans is the start of the next gen of kpop
The melody of this song is nice, but the theme of the mv is heavy
